AIBU to think it's perfectly fine to not shower everyday?

The Loose Women were mortified when Stacey Solomon and Saira Khan revealed that they did not shower everyday....the latter only once or twice a week. AIBU To think it's fine not to shower every day? I certainly don't unless the weather's dead hot. Surely got to be good for the environment, water bills and skin to not be running the shower everyday. False vanity by the Loose Women maybe?

I have to shower every day. I smell otherwise and my hair is greasy within 24 hrs of washing it. Even when I strip wash at the sink, I still feel like I smell.

My mother on the other hand showers a max of once a year. She strip washes face pits and bits every day and washes her hair over the kitchen sink every 7-10 days. She never smells or looks dirty. But shes disabled. So never moves enough to build up a sweat and her thermo regulation is all to put, shell have a fire on in a heatwave! While I'm not an exercise fan, I am always the warmest in the office and do sweat without much exertion.

So based on my extensive research, I'd say it's fine for different people to have different washing routines. The important thing is to be self aware enough to know when you need to wash, and ideally to preempt 'smell point' rather than acting after you've begun to get smelly. Eg I could get away with not washing my hair on day two, until approx lunchtime but by 3pm it will look to others that I haven't washed it for a week. (Yes it really is that greasy and goes from ok to awful that quickly, I've tried all methods over the years for reducing it but it has been this greasy since I was 14, and teen dds are exactly the same.)

I really need a shower every morning just to get myself moving. If not, I float about in my dressing gown feeling sluggish. I feel so much better and ready to get on with the day once I've showered. Other people's showering habits are irrelevant to me.

NoYo · 22/05/2019 18:50

I wash my hair every 2 days.
Normally shower every day but I've been showering twice daily due to perimenopausal sweating. Quick 2 minute one in the morning and a longer shower of a night. I use a fresh towel each time too Blush

It’s going to depend on the person. People who sweat a lot or work in active jobs (or who do a lot of exercise) will need to shower daily. People with dry skin are probably better not showering daily. For most people it is going to be down to personal preference.

It’s like hair washing - there was a thread on here last week where somebody was horrified that anybody could go more than 24hrs without washing and straightening their hair. Apparently their hair looked like an oil slick if they didn’t. My hair is super-dry and curly and looks bad for the first 24hrs after shampooing, so I either refresh the curls with plain water, or co-wash to clean my scalp after exercise. I only use shampoo once a week to clear product residue. Not dirty or smelly, hair looks much better.

DS2 uses E45 instead of soap/shampoo (he has eczema), and he has beautiful little curls. Not greasy at all. I do bathe him daily because he is still in nappies and I think it is more hygienic, but we have never used soap on him because it makes his eczema much worse.

I shower every other day, occasionally will stretch to every 3rd day if DP is away and I'm feeling lazy and don't need to leave the house, but then I don't sweat much at all. Always give my pits and bits a wash at the sink on non shower days though.

I suffer with dry skin, also the steam from the shower makes my hair go super frizzy, those are my excuses Grin

MaMaMaMySharona · 22/05/2019 18:53

I personally wouldn’t feel right putting on clean clothes if I hadn’t showered, so I shower every morning. I don’t really care how often other people wash as long as they don’t smell 🤷🏽‍♀️

BigRedLondonBus · 22/05/2019 18:54

I shower every day as I sweat a lot, I would definitely smell if I didn’t

Gth1234 · 22/05/2019 18:54

I shower every week, even if I don't need to.

OneStepSideways · 22/05/2019 18:55

Depends what you're doing! Staying at home or just popping out for school runs/groceries I think it's fine to shower every other day. But if you're going to work or out for lunch with friends I think it's polite to have a shower first!

Being stuck in an office with an unwashed colleague is grim! I know some people feel a flannel wash is fine, but IME they smell a bit stale and musty, especially on a warm day or when they take a layer off. Body odour is unprofessional, like going to work in clothes you've been wearing for 24 hours.

damned · 22/05/2019 18:56

I also go a week between hair washes. Dons bullet proof vest.

Sculpin · 22/05/2019 18:56

It's fine not to shower every day.

pinkcardi · 22/05/2019 18:56

I smell, and if I didn't shower/bathe/properly wash every day, you'd all know about it.

My DH on the other hand never, ever smells. He could go days without showering, but doesn't.

Pippa12 · 22/05/2019 18:57

I’m a nurse... I stink and feel like one big germ at times Grin... work days I shower before and after shift.

If I’m day off I shower first thing because I’m conscious that I sweat a lot, I use the max protection deodorants.

Each to there own tho, if your not sweaty and can’t be bothered, great!

Whisky2014 · 22/05/2019 18:59

Well, there's a lot of oil and dead skin cells shedding all the time. And you sweat a lot in sleep so i definitely do shower every day.
I try and wash hair only every and day but can't do that for longer cause my hair gets too greasy.
I fucking hate the idiots on loose women though. Utter garbage.

Samind · 22/05/2019 19:01

I shower/bath everyday. Sweaty by nature unfortunately

YesQueen · 22/05/2019 19:02

Hair every 3-4 days for me and I use conditioner only, never shampoo
Shower - every day, every other day, depends what I've been doing and how I feel . Desk job so no sweat involved, sometimes I'll just get in the shower and wash pits/bits/feet if my skin feels dry, other days I soak in the bath
As long as you're clean/BO free then it's all good

NoParticularPattern · 22/05/2019 19:02

It surely depends on how dirty or sweaty you routinely get? I agree it’s not necessary to shower every day if you don’t get dirty/sweaty but I don’t think it would be pleasant for anyone if you didn’t shower when you got dirty simply on the basis of “well I had a shower yesterday so it’s not shower day today”. I shower/bath every day (usually a bath with the kids) but it isn’t often that I’ve got to the end of the day without getting dirty or sweating. I don’t wash my hair every day though, once or twice a week at most. Surely even if you’re not showering though you’ll arbitrarily least have a wipe over of the essentials- bum, armpits etc?! I can’t imagine not washing at all for several days.

NoParticularPattern · 22/05/2019 19:04

at least. Not arbitrarily Hmm you’ve excelled yourself this time iPhone.

codenameduchess · 22/05/2019 19:07

I shower every morning, I have horrendous night sweats and smell like off meat when I get up.... dh and dd don't smell and can go a day or two between washes- I'm always jealous of that as it makes their morning so much easier.

my morning showers are 5 minutes to wash my body, hair gets a wash every 7-10 days and I feel like that keeps the water and gas usage down a little.

Titsywoo · 22/05/2019 19:10

I shower every other day. I dont feel dirty on the days I dont although I would if I left it another day! If I wash too often my hair and skin get really dry and horrible. I'm not a particularly sweaty person though so I understand why some need to shower more often. I try to be as quick as possible to save water.

NomDeQwerty · 22/05/2019 19:12

I wonder whether the woman I work with thinks she's ok not showering every day. She looks clean enough ....

maddiemookins16mum · 22/05/2019 19:12

A couple of times a week is grim. I shower daily but have been known to not bother washing my hair on a weekend. I couldn’t give two hoots about the water bill, the environment, my skin etc - I have a basic human need/desire to feel clean and fresh once a day.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/05/2019 19:15

I shower most days, usually 6 out of 7, I do have one off day, especially in the winter.
If the weather hot then I will everyday.

RussellSprout · 22/05/2019 19:18

I don't shower every day unless its hot weather. Every other day is fine!

3in4years · 22/05/2019 19:18

No it's not ok.
