Anyone else think Jon got a really terrible deal in the end?

I know IABU to want a happy ending. It was never going to happen, but I'm still bummed about it.

@GrwatExoectations no apology needed. It’s fine to see different things and have different opinions, it’s only a tv show, as you said.🙂

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 21/05/2019 15:41

I'm just glad Davos survived. Bloody love Davos.

Jellybeanduck · 21/05/2019 15:53

DH found on reddit this morning. Bit better than the actual ending.

Snappedandfarted2019 · 21/05/2019 15:59

I was looking how to post the same alternative video ending although it had a different song attached to it.

LaurieMarlow · 21/05/2019 16:00

I'm just glad Davos survived. Bloody love Davos.

Yeah me too. He did have a 'survivor vibe' about him though.

PrincessDaff · 21/05/2019 16:04

For me this last series has lost the shock factor of game of thrones. I am re watching form the beginning and the likes of Ned being beheaded, Joffery, the red wedding, Ramsay Bolton!!! These characters and story line left me not being able to breath watching them and yet I felt these series was just so predictable and boring.

I think more of the characters should have died (and the ones that did die in better ways). It ended too happy for game of thrones. In the words of Ramsay "if you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention" I thought it would end and we would all be on the edge of our seats. Instead I was just bored. Although the return of Robin Arryn was a delightful surprise. He has certainly grew up haha.

CaptainJaneway62 · 21/05/2019 16:14

I think they have blown so much of the budget on the main actors' salaries that the writers and producers hands were tied when it came to producing an absolutely brilliant final series.

None of the actors deserve $1M for each for the final Season 8 (6 episodes). Especially Sansa(her acting is dire!)

CaptainJaneway62 · 21/05/2019 16:18

*sorry that should say paid a $1M per episode.

obviouslymarvellous · 21/05/2019 16:19

Also the whole what's west of Westeros bit - why not ask boring bran eh? And Tyrion saying something like bran had the best story - again what about ayra? The whole faceless men bit was a waste of a story as was the whole thing really. Very disappointed ☹️

LaurieMarlow · 21/05/2019 16:24

Sansa is not ‘tier1’ so not getting a million an episode. Quite why you’d single her out for poor acting when you’ve got Kit and Emilia there (actually getting a million) id never know.

Fair fucks to Lena Headly for negotiating a million an episode for staring out of windows. Grin

AryaStarkWolf · 21/05/2019 16:26

I really liked the ending and think it would feel more believable and right in the books if they're ever finished, the ending wasn't the problem with this last season, it was how they rushed it

Yamayo · 21/05/2019 16:32

To me the main issue was that the Jon and Dany 'love' was so left field and unconvincing that it destroyed the epic 'sacrificing your love for the good of the land' trope they were going for.
They had sex once (while a voiceover revealed their family ties) and then spent the rest of the series squabbling, with Jon looking at her with concern throughout.
So when he killed her, instead of being moved I was just glad they'd got rid of her.

It was clear from her Nazi rally party-themed speech that she was never going to rule, and they didn't have enough time to wage yet another war so her fate was sealed.

Yamayo · 21/05/2019 16:33

Emilia has been one of the weakest actresses through the series but I felt she did her best work by far this season.

PerfectPeony2 · 21/05/2019 16:34

Jon was never supposed to be King. He played his part by killing Dany- he wouldn’t have been able to do that if he wasn’t part Targaryan.

Bran is king because it’s the most sensible peaceful solution. I like it. It’s not just a lot bran. It means they can all work together- no more game of thrones. A democracy. Sansa stood up for the North and they get to be independent again.

It is a bit depressing but if you think about it Jon is where he is meant to be. He got to be a hero. He’s got his wolf, the Wildlings. A peaceful life and maybe he’ll even fall in love again and have baby Jon Snows!

I think we needed more episodes because they rushed too much but overall I’m happy with the ending!

PerfectPeony2 · 21/05/2019 16:34
  • just about Bran
Honeyroar · 21/05/2019 16:41

@Laurie I’m getting the Sansa being livid bit from her expression at the meeting in the old dragon pit, she looked like she thought she’d get the votes and practically winced/fumed at each aye. As Previously mentioned, just my interpretation- it’s a tv show, there’s no right or wrong!

Honeyroar · 21/05/2019 16:42

Oh and I agree that Emilia’s acting was much better in this series, particularly in the last episode.

LaurieMarlow · 21/05/2019 16:43

it’s a tv show, there’s no right or wrong!

There’s also seeing things that match your prejudices that have no textual support whatsoever, but hey ho.

theWarOnPeace · 21/05/2019 16:45

When greyworm started giving out demands, we all said “oh fuck off greyworm!”, then they all started doing as he asked! Sorry - what???

I did like the bit when Arya said “say one more word about killing my brother and I’ll slit your throat”. I also liked Brienne filling in Jamie’s history. He made a horrible decision in the end, but he deserved to have the good things he did commemorated. It just solidified Brienne’s good character being really, counted upon to honour others, to do what’s right.... I think that was very much on keeping with her character. At least they didn’t muller her arc completely by making her succumb to Tormund or something.

Jon was let down by the writers in that him going to the wall wasn’t properly explained and like everything else, felt rushed. I firmly believed that Jon would have gone back either way. He was truly at home out in the wide open mountain terrain, not dressed up in kings landing. He loved Ghost, and in the books they are almost as one, so if the show ending is true to what the books will be, then he needed to be wild with Ghost. He’s never had a name to really speak of, no social standing, and instead of craving it he came to terms with it and it became a part of him. He couldn’t carry the weight of his true identity. He had to go. He had to be with the wildlings who don’t care who is who, or get into politics. Jon was just sick to death of the whole thing. Oh, and there is no nights watch, he literally ‘rode off into the sunset’ as it were. That was what it was for him, going out north of the wall, like his big dream. Not needing a title or adoration, no battles on behalf of evil dictators, none of the relentless bloodshed that he’s been seeing. Ygritte’s land.

LaurieMarlow · 21/05/2019 16:49

I agree Emilia acting got better. She was pretty decent in that facist bit on the balcony for example.

However she is limited in what she can do and I think her and Kit’s limitations ruined her death scene for me. We needed to see a lot of conflicting emotions, conveyed in a few seconds from both of them. It didn’t happen and the scene fell terribly flat.

If a similar scene had played out between Tyrion and Cersei for example (not exactly parallel I know) imagine how awesomely they would have coveted it.

That’s not to diss Emilia particularly, I actually have a huge girl crush on her Blush

PerfectPeony2 · 21/05/2019 16:51

Agree I liked he Brienne ending. It showed her good character. Jamie always protected his queen and she protected hers.

LaurieMarlow · 21/05/2019 16:52

The Brienne bit was the best. I cried at that.

AryaStarkWolf · 21/05/2019 16:52

I liked Briennes ending but I kind of expected her to stay with Sansa because of her vow to Cat Stark. I loved the council group though

FindaPenny · 21/05/2019 16:57

It was a quiet kind of episode for a finale, It tied up loose ends pretty well though. At first I was disappointed that there wasn't a more dramatic death for dany...such as her threatening arya and sansa, so Jon was forced to kill her, but actually the real ending was better as Jon made a moral decision to kill her based on her actions at Kings landing.

Drogon burning the throne was sort of weird but the scene was cool. Liked Briennes scene... Wondered if they might make her pregnant, but that probably would have been corny. Still pissed off about Jamie though!

Didn't like the council scene and not just because Bran was crowned. I love tyrion but his speeches this episode were weak.

Wished bran had some kind of vision about almost anything, just to add a bit of magic/interest to his character.... Maybe the scenes showing the fates of Jon, arya and sansa could have been his visions.

I think Jons ending was satisfying.... He wouldn't want to rule after killing Dany and he was at home with ghost and the Wildings.

pikapikachu · 21/05/2019 16:59

None of the actors deserve $1M for each for the final Season 8 (6 episodes).

Lena Headey got an amazing deal there. Her number of working hours compared to Jon must be minute.

Maisie and Sophie are on apparently 200k per episode and I read that Sophie is fine with that considering how little physical stuff she does compared to Kit,
