To think throwing milkshakes over people is disgusting?

So apparently it’s okay to chuck milkshakes over people we disagree with?

Now, I do not like Tommy Robinson, Carl Sargon, or Farage. However, I think that chucking cold food at them, or threatening to, is pathetic. If you disagree with them, then debate them. Take down their argument intelligently. Chucking a cheap milkshake makes you look like a toddler.

I'm sure it is wrong, but I have to try very hard to feel sympathetic towards those who it has been done to recently.

I suspect their blame will be wide spread and their vengeance strong. (And what I heard Farage's arrival at passing out blame was close to instant.)

Cafelatte2go · 20/05/2019 17:56

No it's pathetic. And I say this as someone who has no time for him.

Figmentofmyimagination · 20/05/2019 18:07

You could find other ways that don’t involve throwing things. Eg some people protest against fascists by banging pots and pans www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/may/27/in-praise-of-banging-pots

Needs a bit of organising though and only works in a group!

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 20/05/2019 18:12

People have a right to express their opinions - even horrible ones. Silencing people you don't like, by assaulting them is not respectful of democracy or freedom of speech. It's the thin end of the wedge - accept and encourage this behaviour and you get an increasingly violent society.

Besides the man who 'joked' about rape has damaged himself far more than a milkshake could do.

TooManyPaws · 20/05/2019 18:21

Always punch a Nazi is a thing.

Biscuit
origamiunicorn · 20/05/2019 18:27

Surely it's not illegal to have a brass band playing nearby Wink

teyem · 20/05/2019 18:28

And when someone else comes along reworks that with the word feminist, eco warrior or Tory paws, will it be worthy of sharing then?

EdWinchester · 20/05/2019 18:29

I agree. There is no argument. People that behave like this are lowlife idiots.

PickAChew · 20/05/2019 18:30

Given farage unannounced arrival in Newcastle, there would have had to be a mass raid on Fenwick's and John Lewis to rustle up the pots and pans at such short notice!

giddyyup · 20/05/2019 18:31

Unless the person is Nigel Farage.

He deserves a lot worse.

EmeraldRubyShark · 20/05/2019 18:32

They thrive on inciting hatred and violence.

If they can’t take it they shouldn’t dish it out.

I had similar thoughts to you OP, but then when I thought about it deeper I realised that as a society if went give far right dangerous lunatics a platform we legitimise them and debating with them only gives them the opportunity to spread their hateful views even further.

I’m glad to live in a country where people who are openly racist xenophobic dog whistling bigots face public resistance. Long may it continue.

Loopytiles · 20/05/2019 18:32

I consider food throwing to be physical violence so not OK, even for people espousing awful views.

Disrupting their talks etc with noise or whatever - fine.

Eg Jarvis Cocker mooning during a Michael Jackson performance at a music awards that time.

Doobigetta · 20/05/2019 18:36

Who are the people spreading these “punch a nazi” memes? Woke, mostly young left-wingers, that’s who.

Which group are woke young lefties fond of calling nazis? Oh yes, middle aged women trying to protect women’s rights.

Be very clear what you are supporting if you think this is a good, clean, legitimate way of expressing your disapproval. Understand exactly what is not too far along that wedge. If physical intimidation, threats and assault are an accepted way of dealing with political views you disagree with, women will be silenced first. And that already happens, now, in this country. That isn’t some far-fetched dystopian tv drama. Ask Maria McLachlan.

ScrommidgeClaryAndSpunt · 20/05/2019 18:38

Here's the thing about freedom of speech. It's in fine shape in this country. Farage has it. James Goddard has it. Carl Benjamin has it. Paul Joseph Watson has it. All the pedlars of hate and divisive nonsense have it. That's why we all know what their views are, wildly out of order as many of us might find them. However, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences, and if those consequences involve someone thinking you're enough of a twat to merit a faceful of milkshake, well, there we are. No one is being silenced here, they're being told to fuck off out of it because they're not welcome.

ScrommidgeClaryAndSpunt · 20/05/2019 18:41

Oh, and: if the chucking of the milkshake also has consequences, i.e. getting done for assault, then there we are too. Consequences!

pikapikachu · 20/05/2019 18:42

Brexit has given rise to people being openly racist. The BBC have also contributed to this problem by promoting Nigel Farage (See Question Time ) as if his views were shared by as many people as mainstream parties. Racists and Nazis should be ashamed of openly expressing these views and being judged by wider society. Britain can't go back to Empire days. We need immigrants and trade with other countries so we can all prosper.

Is a milkshake worse than a pie (the usual protest food?) I wouldn't want Farage and his ilk to visit my area and would welcome anyone stopping that from happening.

FedUpMum40 · 20/05/2019 18:44

Tommy should just suck it up, I'm sure he's used to it, a milkshake is nothing compared to the likes of amir Khan who received death threats for putting up a Xmas tree for his child.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 20/05/2019 18:45

When the far right don’t like something, they punch, kick and murder people.
A milkshake is hardly the right response, prison is, but until that day comes I’m fine with milkshakes.

tenredthings · 20/05/2019 18:46

He probably staged it himself to take the news focus off him laundering illegal funding via PayPal.

MangoFeverDream · 20/05/2019 18:58

Which group are woke young lefties fond of calling nazis? Oh yes, middle aged women trying to protect women’s rights

This is what really worries me. Hopefully they all get done for assault. It’s not okay to throw things at people who say things you don’t like. But I guess it’s all fun and games until someone like Kathleen Stock or Parker Posey gets hit with one.

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 20/05/2019 19:00

I can just imagine what would happen to me if I were to throw a milkshake over a Muslim hate preacher

longwayoff · 20/05/2019 19:15

I think the milkshake throwers have chosen very well. Bring on Jonny Marbles and other flaneurs.

TeaForDad · 20/05/2019 19:18

Ba-dum

FedUpMum40 · 20/05/2019 19:25
