Neighbours cats nuisances.

Fed up of the neighbours cats treating my garden like there own. The sun beams down on my garden so I’m guessing they like that but it also shines in their owners garden. Tonight I’m fuming because I caught it doing a crap in my front garden. First it dug a hole then did the business. I threw water at it so it ran away.
I know my neighbour would knock my door if it was the other way round. What should I do? His is really irritating me now. And they’ve got 4 cats by the way. Not really a fan of next door but we’re civil and polite’ish.

@badlydrawnperson yes your right, it's not.

4TeensAndABaby · 17/05/2019 16:19

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but a gardening mad friend has a similiar problem. He purchases Lion/Tiger/Large Cat Poo from a zoo and puts it in his garden. This apparently does the trick! Although not sure what that smells like either......

Raybay · 17/05/2019 16:44

I've found distilled white vinegar is hated by cats. A few years ago we found the local cats were spraying against our ceramic and terracotta pots. I put some distilled white vinegar in a spay bottle and sprayed pots etc with it. From time to time they were also pissing on my door so I sprayed that too (it's wood). Works a treat. This year no smells so I guess they have learned not to come to the vinegar house. Could you try spraying a bit on your wooden fences or some terracotta pots? For goodness sake don't use bleach, they love the smell of chlorine.

When my cat wants to go out at 4am, should I get out of bed and creep about the neighbourhood with a torch waiting for it to shit, so I can pick it up

You could always give it a tray to crap in and keep the bloody thing in. What's wrong with that? Why the LOL? Dog owners do it all the time.

Just another thoughtless person who wants a pet they don't have to look after, other than providing a tin of food.

Why are cat owners happy to take on a pet that causes misery to their neighbours??

Why the LOL? If you knew anything about cats you would understand. Their toilet habits are nothing like dogs. You can’t just put a lead on them and potter about with them until they poop. The comparison is ridiculous. Hmm

They wouldn’t go on the pavement, they go where they want to and there’s not much you can do to stop it. Again, I don’t think my neighbours (if that’s where my cat chose to go) would appreciate me crawling about in their shrubs with a torch at 4am!

Once cats are used to going outside, a lot of cats won’t use a tray after that. They want to get outside and will get distressed if they’re forced to stay inside. That’s why the Cats Protection Society won’t revoke a cat to someone who can’t provide outside access (unless the cat is already a house cat).

How on earth do you think I don’t look after my pet apart from feeding it? Confused you, are utterly batshit!

And if your idea of “misery” is a couple of bits of cat shit in your hedge then you are very lucky indeed!

19lottie82 · 17/05/2019 17:18

Revoke? rehome

Jaxhog · 17/05/2019 17:22

Cats often don't like to poop in their own territory (ours do in my flower beds). They will pee round the boundary though. They also like to change the location frequently in case 'the enemy' (another cat or fox) smells them out.

If you want to discourage them, try a water pistol. But hide when you do it, then they'll associate the water with the place rather than you. You want them to avoid your garden, not wait until you aren't there.

Jaxhog · 17/05/2019 17:25

Not true. All of ours have gone out all day and stayed in at night (3 generations now). They have no problem using the litter at night, and will use it even if they can outside (if it's cold or raining).

19lottie82 · 17/05/2019 18:02

Not true

Yes, it is true. My cat refused to use a tray after an operation when the vet told us to keep it inside, and ended up very distressed.

I took it up with the vet and they said a lot of cats don’t like to use a tray once they are used to going outside.

What many cat owners do not realise is that their habit of letting their pets go on other people’s property, exposes pregnant women’s unborn babies and people with a weak immune system to some very severe health risk: toxoplasmosis. This parasite is present in the feces of cats that are infected.

That’s why as a pregnant woman you are adviced against gardening on your own property or at least wear gloves and wash hands very thoroughly after.

MrMeSeeks · 17/05/2019 18:11

why is it not cruel to keep an animal that naturally roams indoors? It would be cruel to do it to a dog.

Keep them from being run over? Keep them safe, keep ill cats safe etc?
Mine are allowed in the garden but do not roam.
They certainly don't seem to miss out ( one was let out front accidently, he turned riund and ran in the house Grin )

You can’t just put a lead on them and potter about with them until they poop. The comparison is ridiculous

You really can if you try..

kill newborns yep, what a load of shit....

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 18:23

You could train a dog to be a house dog, doesn't mean it's not cruel.

learieonthewildmoor · 17/05/2019 18:32

I had a neighbour that used to leave her tom cat out at night whereupon he would wee all over our front door. It was really nasty smelling. She just shrugged when we said it was a problem. We used to have to spray the door with ammonia to keep him away and get rid of the smell. It wrecked the door.
I was really cross that she didn’t care. I strongly urged my dh to wee on her door, see how she liked it, but he was strangely reluctant to engage in a war of pees.
Moral: it’s good to keep your cat in your own house and yard.

Slicedpineapple · 17/05/2019 18:36

I assume the "natural" tendency for some dogs to eat cats isn't regarded with the same level of insouciance as the killing of birds and other wildlife by cats?

My dog doesn't have a natural tendency to eat cats. He quite likes them. The only ones he doesn't like are black cats and that is because the neighbours cat has scared him so many times in our own garden.

I don't know many dogs that actually have an issue with cats.

flumpybear · 17/05/2019 18:41

I have cats and also love cats too, way over dogs, rabbits etc...
however I'd rather my cats didn't visit neighbours gardens, so do something like water pistol, citronella etc, something humane and not dangerous for the cat and it'll avoid you

Dongdingdong · 17/05/2019 18:47

How many of the posters on this thread who take issue with cats killing mice/birds/other wildlife eat meat and feed their dogs meat? Because if you do you’re all utter hypocrites.

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 20:30

@Dongdingdong or eat meat themselves...... but oh a cat killed a bird!

dreichuplands · 17/05/2019 20:59

I think there is a difference between a farmed animal dying to provide nutrition and a wild native animal dying to provide sport to an invasive species.
Ie, not all deaths are equal.

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 21:57

@dreichuplands probably you're right right... the farmed animal has a shit life being raised to be killed. The wild animal blissfully happy, flying roaming free and with no restrictions.

Well done for pointing that our, farmed animals live a much worse life.

dreichuplands · 17/05/2019 22:07

Personally I'm more interested in keeping native populations of song birds alive.
Farmed animals would have no life if they weren't being farmed. Being eaten by cats once dead doesn't interrupt their life cycle.
Native animals and plants should be protected where possible from invasive, non native species.
This is why you can buy all sorts of plants at a garden center but can't go and dig up native orchids in the wild.
Trying to protect native wildlife but buying farmed meat is the same.

Anyone who thinks their neighbours will be happy with a pet - that they didn't wish to have - crapping constantly in their garden is totally batshit! That would be you then!

Any responsible pet owner keeps their pet away from danger and don't allow their "family pet" to cause misery for the neighbours.

I'm sick to death of seeing posts where cat owners continually post that their "beloved" pet has gone missing. Don't want to lose your pet? Keep the fucking thing in!!

19lottie82 · 17/05/2019 23:19

thegardenfairy you’re totally changing the point of your argument!
So now I’m irresponsible because I let me cat go outside? Hmm
You seem to have a different understanding of the work “misery” than I do!
And I’ve had cats my whole life and never had one go missing. Where are all these posts you’re talking about?

winobaglady · 17/05/2019 23:29

Not rtft, but your neighbour could entice their cats back into their own garden by creating a cat toilet area.
They find a corner, secluded spot and create an area of turned soil. They lightly sprinkle cat litter and, most importantly, clean any pop up as soon as possible.
I would say you're ok to spray the cats with water to keep them out.

TheGardenFairy · 17/05/2019 23:32

19Lottie82

You are obviously oblivious to the misery the pet YOU chose to have - and can't he arsed to look after properly - is causing your neighbours. Carry on living in your own little world. I'm positive you will wake up... one day!

Where are all the posts about missing (often found dead) cats? Seriously? What planet are you on? Your poor pet 😢 Imagine being forced to rely on someone who couldn't care less whether you live or die...

19lottie82 · 18/05/2019 00:00

garden why on earth do you think I don’t look after my pet properly? And where did I even say my cat craps in my neighbours garden? You seem very dramatic!
