Neighbours cats nuisances.

Fed up of the neighbours cats treating my garden like there own. The sun beams down on my garden so I’m guessing they like that but it also shines in their owners garden. Tonight I’m fuming because I caught it doing a crap in my front garden. First it dug a hole then did the business. I threw water at it so it ran away.
I know my neighbour would knock my door if it was the other way round. What should I do? His is really irritating me now. And they’ve got 4 cats by the way. Not really a fan of next door but we’re civil and polite’ish.

I wouldn’t keep a cat indoors I think it’s cruel.
They kill birds and all sorts of small creatures because that’s what they do. 🤷‍♀️
I found a squirt of water keeps them from shitting where they’re not supposed to.
Don’t think I’d have one in a very built up area with nowhere to shit though.

TroysMammy · 17/05/2019 14:24

I love cats and being catless for 3 years some furry bastards have been using my veg beds as their personal litter tray. Not any more as I've bought a water cat scarer and so far so good.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 17/05/2019 14:30

I’m not keen on cats either OP.

In my last house in a cul de sac I never had any issues with cats until a new neighbour moved in with cats who immediately starting crapping in my garden, I can assure you it was never buried and was mostly wet poo so had to wash it away, could never catch them before they started and by the time I ran round to frighten them they were gone 🤬. The whole reason I don’t have cars or dogs is because I don’t want to deal with stinking animal poo. I think that prospective cat owners should be vetted to make sure they can keep cats in their own garden by having things on fences etc so they can’t get out or have a run. If you live you flats or no garden to put the measure in then sorry but no cat. I know that won’t help with people buying from private buyers etc and that would maybe reduce unwanted kittens etc as well, in my ideal world

Also this whole thing about making it so that you have to report hitting a cat. This isn’t always possible, I’ve seen cats getting run over on fast roads e.g. busy 60mph roads what do they want us to do pull over? Possibly cause an accident for a pet allowed to roam? It’s the owners own decision to allow it out so it’s the risk you take. I also always thought you had to report dogs as the owner is then held liable for not having the dog under control? So maybe that wouldn’t be a bad thing for cat owners so they could be held liable for the accident

Sparklfairy · 17/05/2019 14:35

I am neutral on this issue but it has lead me to Google the problem. Can't believe there's a law on this and it's amused me Grin

*Cats cannot ‘trespass’

The law relating to trespass in the context of domestic animals is found in the Animals Act 1971. However, cats enjoy a unique position as the Animals Act 1971 does not apply to them. This is how cats have this ‘right to roam’ and they cannot, therefore, trespass in the legal sense. Therefore, an owner cannot be legally responsible for where their cats go.*

here you go, third hit on Goggle.

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 14:42

Oh come off it @ChardonnaysPrettySister that is not based on anything, an investigation was launched what was the outcome? It's is so far from conclusive.

What about this though...

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/05/2019 14:44

Sorry, did you want the police and coroner report as well?

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 14:47

@ChardonnaysPrettySister no just something that said the cat killed the baby, not suspected and awaiting a report. Otherwise it's unsubstantiated bollocks, isn't it?

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 14:48

@ChardonnaysPrettySister if you have the police and coroners report that would be good, do you?

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/05/2019 14:49

ChardonnaysPrettySister But even in the report there is a question mark over what actually happened. Anyone could have murdered the baby or it could have been a cot death.

Another one, but probably sids as reported.

@ChardonnaysPrettySister
your statement "known for killing new norms" is ridiculous, I get people don't like cats, but comments like that just make me think what ridiculous high drama and you lose your valid points. If cats were known to kill new norms I like it would be widely known.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/05/2019 15:06

Oh that’s so mature of you, picking up on a typo.

Makes you look really educated and proficient in English.

Cats kill. Cats shit everywhere. Keep them in.

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 15:07

@ChardonnaysPrettySister what typo?

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 15:12

@ChardonnaysPrettySister I made a typo saying new norms not newborns, can't see that you e done that? It was an auto correct fail for me.

Do show me where I've picked up on your typo? Because it wasn't intentional and I can't actually see it!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/05/2019 15:14

Why would put "new norms" in inverted commas if you didn't quote me?

Not sure what you are on about. I thought I wrote "new norms" and it would have been a typo.

So I'm not sure why you would quote me wrongly?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/05/2019 15:16

Anyway, it's your typo, and I assumed you are making fun of mine because you put it inverted commas.

Do be careful when you quote.

JacquesHammer · 17/05/2019 15:16

Quick lob of a rock at my metal shed, cat scarpers quick sharp. Haven't had a problem with cats in the garden since I started doing that.

They walk along the wall at the end to get elsewhere Grin

(And before people start about "what if you hit a cat" - I'm a good shot, believe me if I wanted to hit a cat I would. I don't and therefore I aim where the cat will not be harmed)

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 15:19

@ChardonnaysPrettySister it was typo by me! I made the mistake, where did you write "new norms" you said "newborns". Christ if you're going to throw accusations at least have right on your side. It was an autocorrect fail as I split the words new and born. Try it see if it autocorrects!

You're paranoid clearly, when you've not even said "new norms" but want to assume someone is having a dig at you.

Your accusation to me was your mistake though, so don't start telling me that I'm trying to look really educated and proficient in English..

boobirdblue · 17/05/2019 15:21

@ChardonnaysPrettySister so be careful when I quote....do be careful when you attack people without justification!

No apology I assume? Sorry I had a go at you, you're right I didn't say that.

ArfArfBarf · 17/05/2019 15:28

We had a terrible problem with cat shit in our old garden. It was clearly disputed territory between about 4 different cats and they would all shit all over the lawn to mark it. Using a water pistol didn’t really make a dent because they’d just go when we weren’t at home/at night. The sonic deterrent seemed to work a bit but we had a long thin garden and we’d have needed about 10 to cover it all.

In our new house I was gutted when our neighbours got a cat but actually it just treats our garden as it’s own and we’ve never found any shit. Not seen any squirrels since it was allowed out though and we used to see loads ☹️

exWifebeginsat40 · 17/05/2019 15:33

we have four cats, but then next door but one have a dog that they let shit with wild abandon in their garden, and i’m here to tell you that the smell in warm weather is WAY worse than even the grimmest of my cats could produce.

but, i like my neighbours, so i haven’t let it ruin my life. i just suggested a dog loo for the end of their garden, and now everyone lives in harmony once more.

(our cats insist upon the litter tray despite The Great Outdoors; i suspect they just like to gloat about their humans picking up after them)

dreichuplands · 17/05/2019 15:36

Our cat is and always has been an indoor cat that was trained to go outside on a lead.
Dogs are a major problem for cats on leads. Untrained, out of control aggressive ones.

But I don't like cat shit in my garden or destruction of wildlife and don't expect my neighbors too either.

Bwekfusth · 17/05/2019 15:44

Real problem in my house of all of the neighbourhood cats using my home as a dosshouse. OH sent me these photos today, of what happened to him after he tried to coax one from under our sons bed. It's ballooned in size since. He's had to go to hospital, start a course of antibiotics and ring in sick for work this evening. Really must get one of those proper chipped cat flaps. Cats can fuck off. Except mine, obvs.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 17/05/2019 16:01

Cats can be trained to use a set area as a toilet. When you first start letting a cat go out choose a secluded space in your garden and dig over the soil and spread over some bark or soil. Then empty their litter tray over it and most cats will get the fact that this is their toilet area.
I have 3 cats and have found this does work.
I have told my neighbor if they see my cats in their garden and they don’t want them there to spray them with water. They never seem to go in that direction so either they have been soaked in the past or the garden doesn’t appeal to them. Plenty of open land around me so it is probably more exciting for them.
I can’t do anything about birds but then birds are prey not only cats but other birds and foxes. Nature does mean large animals will prey on smaller. Even dogs have been known to kill birds. They might not be as skilled hunters as cats but given the opportunity they are still a threat.

badlydrawnperson · 17/05/2019 16:04

I assume the "natural" tendency for some dogs to eat cats isn't regarded with the same level of insouciance as the killing of birds and other wildlife by cats?
