TM has agreed to start the process of leaving office in June. I have mixed feelings and am very worried about the future of this country. AIBU to think this is going to make the situation worse and possibly lead to no deal Brexit?

Only majority with help of DUP

MarshaBradyo · 16/05/2019 16:31

In fact either side could do much better with a better leader

Alsohuman · 16/05/2019 16:31

Major was a bloody good constituency MP, as I know from first hand experience. He was largely responsible for the Good Friday Agreement despite Blair getting all the credit. He and Heseltine are also talking great sense over Brexit. If you really want to see a thoroughly nasty piece of work, Esther McVey is the very definition of it.

Trottersindependenttraders · 16/05/2019 16:31

I like Clair Fox, though I notice a smear campaign gathering pace in the media. I knew her years ago. A principled and thoughtful woman who believes in democracy and freedom.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! A 'principled and thoughtful woman', who after the IRA bomb in Warrington in 1993 defended the actions of the IRA because it was "defending" itself and more recently, in a phone call to one of the victim's fathers, repeatedly refused to disavow her comments.

No smear campaign, I've just re-read the tweet from Colin Parry about her phone call to him.

But yeah, "principled". Jeez Louise! Hmm

BastardGoDarkly · 16/05/2019 16:35

Fuck me, Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, would be laughable if it wasnt so scary.

pigsDOfly · 16/05/2019 16:37

Well that's the good news.

But bloody hell, look at the bunch lining up ready to jump into her dead man's shoes.

Not a fan of May by any means, but I've got a horrible feeling we're going to end up in an even deeper mess at the hands of someone like BJ or JRM.

Parliament is broken.

53rdWay · 16/05/2019 16:37

Claire Fox, believer in democracy, freedom and the right of the IRA to murder children. Sounds wonderful!

RomanyQueen1 · 16/05/2019 16:38

Irrespective of Brexit, thank God.
I just hope for GE to get the cons out for good.

badlydrawnperson · 16/05/2019 16:40

I just hope for GE to get the cons out for good.
I wouldn't be so sure about that - there are loads of people who would vote for a nematode worm if it had a Blue Rosette.

MarshaBradyo · 16/05/2019 16:43

If the alternative is Corbyn then forget about Labour

lolaflores · 16/05/2019 16:45

If it were possible to know what the machinations of the Tory party are, we can only guess who will be PM.
It may suit some faction to have Boris there, Or Gove might meet the political ends of some other shadowy gang of opportunistic meglomaniacs for whom the continued Brexit shit show is useful.
There are so many formulations of which PM would suit which group, none of us Civilians could even make a good guess never mind an educated one.
I always remember that The Thick Of It episode with gro8ups of various interests rampaging round Whitehall, counting votes, trying to find out who will vote for who and trying to pin their colours to masts as the minutes ticked past, hoping they wouldn't be scuppered. It didn't seem to matter as tot he quality of the candidate.
Simply put, we are at the mercy of those In westminster who's first and only allegience is themselves.
All the best

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/05/2019 16:45

Fuck me Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, would be laughable if it wasn’t so scary.

The thought brings me near to incredulous, nervous laughter and thoughts I’ve been transported to a parallel universe.

I didn’t know John major tried to stop fuel payments.

I reckon the cons will go pretty shortly, and either labour or UKIP will be in.
If I didn't know better the leaflet we got from UKIP today was pretty believable. Obviously, I know better, but no doubt a lot were taken in by it.

Upzadaizy · 16/05/2019 16:46

AIBU to think this is going to make the situation worse and possibly lead to no deal Brexit?

Indeed OP. I despise Mrs May for her xenophobia as Home Secretary & PM (the "hostile environment" for non-UK EU citizens and people from beyond the EU).

But she's a thin sliver of protection from the horrors of Boris Johnson, or Michael Gove, or David Lidington, or Jacob Rees-Mogg.

millythepink · 16/05/2019 16:46

There's no doubt she was handed a poisoned chalice, but dear God that woman couldn't negotiate her way to a vanilla slice in a cake shop. She walked into negotiations already waving a little white flag and wearing an apologetic expression.

But, God knows what will become of us now.

bellinisurge · 16/05/2019 16:52

But there is only a second reading of the Bill if the first reading is successful. Basically giving those Leave cowards who hate her a no-win situation if they don't pass it on its first reading.

Alsohuman · 16/05/2019 16:53

She wasn’t handed a poison chalice, she snatched it.

GlassOfPort · 16/05/2019 16:54

@Curious

If we revoke, we get to keep all current rebates and opt outs

infacts.org/staying-in-eu-would-not-lose-our-rebate/

Also, I am sure that most small buisness do not export, but even among those there will be many who employ EU nationals, have EU nationals among their customers or import materials from the EU

SisyphusDad · 16/05/2019 16:56

The only good thing about Boris is that he isn't Jacob Rees-Mogg.

LellyMcKelly · 16/05/2019 16:56

Boris. Jesus. He’s a fuckwit.

Meanwhile the clock keeps ticking.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/05/2019 16:58

Did she - as I I’ve said that I would do if I were her - bounce out of number 10, tell ‘saya-Nara fuckers’, give the middle finger then book herself into a one way place to Rio?

StoorieHoose · 16/05/2019 16:58

If Boris becomes PM I'll get out and campaign for Scottish Independence the very next day

MitziK · 16/05/2019 16:59

I doubt that she is going in June - she's the sort of person who will call a meeting to talk about calling a meeting to have a chat about having a meeting. And not listen to anybody in the process.

It's deeply depressing to think that the least worst option in the Tories appears to be Gove of the 'first line' politicians. Jo Johnson comes across as the kid who got all the good genes out of the Johnsons, so might have a chance at a later date.

But whoever they end up with, we'll end up with them too, as not only is the Labour Party seemingly incapable of shutting up and backing their leader when it's important (the Tories do that every single time), the Brexit Bollocks means that votes will be split between several parties. Although I am hoping to God/Gaia/Zeus/whoever might be out there if anyone is, that people aren't stupid enough to vote for the fucking Farage bunch. I'd rather the fucking Tories than them.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/05/2019 16:59

Anyone but Boris, the snake.

Gth1234 · 16/05/2019 16:59

@Debfronut

In retrospect she was appalling. She was a remainer, and has wasted 2 plus years of the process, thereby preventing a successful timeous withdrawal. Our best hope now is a landslide for Nigel's Brexit party..
