Theresa May stepping down just announced

TM has agreed to start the process of leaving office in June. I have mixed feelings and am very worried about the future of this country. AIBU to think this is going to make the situation worse and possibly lead to no deal Brexit?

Are there no other competent female candidates? (Not read the whole thread and can't)

sunshine11 · 17/05/2019 18:24

I read recently that there is a legal case underway to challenge the legality of the delay past the end of March. If successful (ie the person bringing the case wins) we will Brexit immediately with no deal. I find it astonishing that our government is governing so poorly as to make decisions which may prove to be outside the law!

LakieLady · 17/05/2019 18:25

I’m not a Tory either but I could stomach Amber Rudd.

I have been ... well, not exactly impessed, but mildly heartened, by her willingness to make changes to the madness that is Universal Credit. I like a decent dose of pragmatism in a politician.

Unfortunately, she has a tiny majority and is widely expected to lose her seat next time round.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/05/2019 18:32

Yes Amber Rudd would be good, seems able to take criticism and actually learn from it (a little). She was made a scapegoat for TM's crap handling of the home office before. I would champion her over any of the others.

littlemissmuffins · 17/05/2019 18:32

Makes no difference IMO. They will keep imposing 'austerity' on the disabled and the working poor, despite announcing austerity is over recently (it is FAR from over for the poor). Brexit will still happen.

I'd be mildly heartened by Amber Rudd IF she actually would DO something about the high court judgement on 11 January which ruled that working mothers are losing 100s or 1000s a year in what used to be tax credits, simply because of their paydays clashing with their universal credit dates. It has been ruled UNLAWFUL by the high court yet is still being inflicted on hard working people every day. Same with the child care fiasco. I would trust her more IF she announced the end of the benefits freeze will be happening next year 2020 rather than just hinting at it, it's has been going on for years, in real terms child benefit is worth almost nothing now compared to what it was before, and it's those working on minimum wage who need this child benefit to rise with inflation. Everything is going up and carers and workers are struggling terribly.

Thallo · 17/05/2019 18:32

I too could stomach Rudd or Hammond.

FancyAPint · 17/05/2019 18:33

Thank god she's going and not before time.

Hopefully brexit can get thrown out or we have a 2nd referendum.

MarniLou · 17/05/2019 18:36

Flobochin - no not an empty threat at all. The long lasting damage Michael Gove has caused to our education system I just couldn't live in a country where he is the leader. ABSOLUTELY NOT!

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/05/2019 18:37

But perhaps she'd be able to do more as actual PM littlemissmuffins?

LakieLady · 17/05/2019 18:38

We voted to leave. So hopefully we will get a new leader who will actually do what we voted for.

It's not just down to the leader though, is it? It has to get through parliament. I'm not sure that anyone could come up with a deal that would satisfy a majority of MPs.

Every protection or safeguard that is sacrificed to gain a few votes on the headbanger wing is likely to lose as many, if not more, on the moderate side. And no deal is not an option because of the Irish border.

Thallo · 17/05/2019 18:40

Whoever takes over the same Brexity conundrums will be there.

onalongsabbatical · 17/05/2019 18:46

Isn't Esther McVey the one who complained that we would be excluded from the EU parliament after leaving the EU? Yet she campaigned for and was in favour of leaving the EU? Is it possible to be any stupider and yet be in the running for something like this? It's like we're going to end up with Peppa fucking Pig in number 10 and everybody's going to be nodding sagely while the rest of the world falls about laughing. She makes Trump look like Wittgenstein wrapped up in Socrates.

littlemissmuffins · 17/05/2019 18:49

CatherineofAragonsPrayerBook I'd hope so. What they really need to do is STOP using universal credit (replacing all tax credits and jsa) as a tool to save save save money due to 'austerity' and actually make it work for the people it is supposed to help - like working single mothers. Right now on UC when anyone switched over they have 5 weeks with no payment at all (!!) and they have to take an 'advance loan' to get through those 5 weeks which is paid back by taking off huge chunks of their payments over the next 12-16 months. If someone claims on an inconvenient date which clashes with their paydates from work, they could lose 1000s of entitlement a year compared to SOMEONE WITH THE EXACT SAME WAGES, RENT, NUMBER OF DC ETC, just because of when they claim. "Too expensive" to fix, according to the dwp in the high court, but they were told it's unlawful. Yet to see any changes. See this -

"Tessa Gregory, solicitor from Leigh Day who represented the first Claimant, Ms Danielle Johnson, stated:

“My client is a hard working single mum doing her very best to support her family. She is precisely the kind of person Universal Credit was supposed to help, yet the DWP designed a rigid income assessment system which left her £500 out of pocket over the year and spiralling into debt due to a fluctuating income. Quite rightly the Court has found that the Secretary of State has been acting unlawfully and ruled that a correct interpretation of the regulations would not lead to such absurd results.

It is extraordinary that when this issue was first raised, the Secretary of State did not act quickly to remedy the problem, instead choosing to fight these four women in court arguing that the system was fit for purpose despite the hardship being caused to working families. This is yet another demonstration of how broken Universal Credit is and why its roll out must be stopped."

Are there no other competent female candidates?

Another female Tory leader would hopefully make the Labour Party take a good hard look at themselves. as if

Thallo · 17/05/2019 18:58

Glaciers will retreat and civilizations will rise and fall in the time it takes Labour to take a good hard look at themselves.

Alsohuman · 17/05/2019 19:03

McVey is not only stupid but poisonous. Vile creature.

user1497997754 · 17/05/2019 19:09

To be honest I am glad she is going.....if I was her I would stick 2 fingers up to it all. Everyone backstabbing ....look on this thread full of people being nasty and it's no wonder a deal can't be agreed. Even the British people are undecided. I hope her and hubby skip off into the sunset and have a nice rest. Let the carnage begin because out of all of them she was the only one who had the courage and conviction . I will miss her

JaneEB · 17/05/2019 19:12

As far as I am concerned anyone has to be better than momentum being in charge of the country. The last time the unions ran the country they destroyed the mines and caused 3 day weeks and extensive power cuts. And it is a fallacy to say Thatcher destroyed the mines, they were the ones that would not allow maintenance workers down the mines.

As for the eu rebate, Brussels plans to get rid of the rebates www.ft.com/content/5ce33318-4e1e-11e8-a7a9-37318e776bab

@onalingsabbatical

What a very fine way of summing up an utter shitstorm 😊

onalongsabbatical · 17/05/2019 19:19

Ooo, ta ToftyAC. Grin

Oscarsdaddy · 17/05/2019 19:22

She sounds perfect then

Iggly · 17/05/2019 19:25

What a joke of a woman

Her being a woman has no bearing on her (lack of) ability as a politician. Please, let’s not use Theresa May being a woman as yet another stick to beat her with.

I’m so disappointed that Brexit has been handled so appallingly. I didn’t want Brexit but I’ve realised that actually, the government should have cracked on with decent cross party talks from the beginning. Brexit was not split along party lines.

Hmm
Attitude84 · 17/05/2019 19:31

Good riddance. She is one of the worst two PMs EVER so far.

Here’s an interesting piece of research into who funded Brexit, and more importantly, why: www.brexitshambles.com/300-hedge-fund-companies-were-represented-by-vote-leave-during-the-referendum-campaign-and-they-formed-the-biggest-demographic-of-their-membership/

Also is it just a coincidence that Farage is being bank-rolled by ‘insurance tycoon’ Aaron Banks and Farage thinks a medical insurance system would be better than a ‘free on the point of delivery’ NHS.

Also is it just an oversight by the Brexit party that their website is so insecure it allows small donations from anywhere in the world (no questions asked): www.indy100.com/article/brexit-party-donate-member-join-fake-paypal-european-elections-8916356
