Danny Baker: Standing ovation at first show since Twitter storm www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-48249637

What is wrong with people. He showed his true inherent racism but people still believe he's a top bloke!

Is he a racist or did he just share a photo without thinking? I rather think the people calling him a racist are racist because of the connection that they made between a mixed race woman and a picture of a gorilla. If anything I think he's probably NOT racist because he didn't make that connection.

ShatnersWig · 13/05/2019 09:03

I don't believe he is an inherent racist. Surely an inherent racist wouldn't kiss a black woman?

I'm not saying the tweet wasn't racist - whether you believe it was inadvertent or not. But an inherent racist would never kiss a black woman. Wouldn't even hug one.

DoneLikeAKipper · 13/05/2019 09:03

Holy shit, Danny is that you? ‘Anyone who sees this as racist is the racist’ is the lowest, thickest form of argument over something that is blatantly fucking racist.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/05/2019 09:03

I was under the impression it was an ill thought out 'posh ' jibe not a racist one.

bingowingsmcgee · 13/05/2019 09:05

I don't believe he meant that tweet as a racial slur. I think he's just a bit stupid and didn't realize the implications

User12879923378 · 13/05/2019 09:05

I have no idea whether Danny Baker is a conscious/deliberate racist or not, but anyone who's been in broadcasting as long as him who would post a photo comparing any mixed heritage baby to a chimpanzee deserves to lose his job.

Actionhasmagic · 13/05/2019 09:06

I’m mixed race and it made me feel awful

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/05/2019 09:07

He may not be racist and He may not have meant to cause any upset but.It was a racist comment.
What else could he have meant.
As soon as he posted it regretted it.
So what does that tell you.

DoneLikeAKipper · 13/05/2019 09:07

Do you think there’s just one form of racism of something? The ‘I hate all non-white people and wouldn’t engage’ with them types? That’s not how racism works Hmm.

NannaNoodleman · 13/05/2019 09:07

I'm speechless that people are defending this! The ignorance!!

OP posts:
Mummaofmytribe · 13/05/2019 09:07

Anyone could see the racism in that tweet a mile off, surely. It is so disappointing

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 13/05/2019 09:07

'I rather think the people calling him a racist are racist because of the connection that they made between a mixed race woman and a picture of a gorilla.'

No, that comparison was made long ago and has been widely used as a racial slur ever since.

NannaNoodleman · 13/05/2019 09:10

Misogynistic rapists kiss and hug women. Racists have black mates down there pub.

Life isn't so simplistic!

Really? Really???!! The fact that calling black people monkeys has been a vile racial slur for many generations makes people make that connection. Not racism. It's called awareness of the abuse many black people have been subjected to for years. Anybody with a slight bit of intellect should be aware of that.

Dottierichardson · 13/05/2019 09:10

But an inherent racist would never kiss a black woman. Wouldn't even hug one.

White slave owners often had sex with their black slaves and even had children with some, that doesn't make them not racist!

TooTrueToBeGood · 13/05/2019 09:12

I stopped believing a single word he says in his own defense when he claimed to be totally unaware that the child is mixed race. I've no idea how he could have been so stupid as to make that tweet but he did. Maybe he was drunk, maybe his ego allowed him to believe he is bulletproof. Whatever the reason, he made it, the implication is clear and he deserves everything he gets.

Dottierichardson · 13/05/2019 09:13

But racists being celebrated in this country is not new, look at the support for Boris Johnson. He's said masses of racist things but people ignore it or secretly or otherwise support what he says. But yes what he did was racist, and it's almost identical to the Tweets that ended Rosanne Barr's career recently.

Longlostperson · 13/05/2019 09:13

When you become so sensitive to everything that people say. You loose what you’re actually looking for.
So now I have no bloody idea who is what anymore.
I’m not sure if he’s inherently racist.

ShatnersWig · 13/05/2019 09:14

@DoneLikeAKipper Of course there are many types. Casual racism is different from inherent racism. An inherent racist would not hug a black person. A casual racist might, because their particular style of racism might be, say, towards the French or the Irish or the Germans or the Polish and not blacks.

The OP stated that Danny Baker is an inherent racist. I don't believe he is an inherent racist. That doesn't mean the tweet wasn't racist, though. The two things aren't exclusive.

DoneLikeAKipper · 13/05/2019 09:14

Sadly, I’m not. In recent years, especially post-Brexit and since MM joined the royals, people have been letting their racist side show more and more, with others defending it. It’s like the country’s mindset has gone back 70 years.

Whilst out and out ‘I hate x people’ is still generally not ok, the middle class faux-ignorance ‘I didn’t realise that wasn’t ok’ type of racism is certainly more acceptable. Just read any thread about MM on here and see what level people think is acceptable, the bar is fucking low.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 13/05/2019 09:15

I had no idea he'd denied knowing the baby was mixed race Hmm

MrPan · 13/05/2019 09:15

I don't think it's defending - it's understanding it. He doesn't live the life of a black person, he didn't think it through, yes it contains a sharp racial slur but that wasn't his intent to offend, his lengthy apology appeared authentic (to me at least). I don't think he is 'inherently racist' just really dumb at the time.

It's the lesson of NOT living someone else's experience and being educated on the issue.

DoneLikeAKipper · 13/05/2019 09:15

A casual racist might, because their particular style of racism might be, say, towards the French or the Irish or the Germans or the Polish and not blacks.

Being French or Polish isn’t a race! It shocks me how many people don’t know the difference between ‘race’ and ‘xenophobia’.

CitadelsofScience · 13/05/2019 09:16

The first two comments on this thread demonstrate why racism still carries on. You need to understand racism in all it's forms before you comment...

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 13/05/2019 09:16

He's a racist pig. These images are generally only used in one context (unless you're David Attenborough). Have the people defending this creep seen the way the officials come down on people who mimic those same images at football matches, which despite what Baker says are unambiguous and can in no way be misinterpreted.? And rightly so, too. That kind of behaviour is intolerable.

Baker's employers were absolutely right to sack him, they are not going to reinstate him, and it's time he stopped bleating and publishing his self-pitying rants in the media. I don't believe it should be a police matter, though.
