Danny Baker: Standing ovation at first show since Twitter storm www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-48249637

What is wrong with people. He showed his true inherent racism but people still believe he's a top bloke!

Chimps dressed as humans....it's PG gone mad.

So are people saying that they didn't realise Meghan was mixed race but thought she was Italian with olive skin allowed a free pass then?

I know people who are mixed race and often get mistaken as Italians, the attitude towards them changes when people find out they aren't Italian and what the actual mix of races is. They find that highly offensive and it messes with their heads too.

CitadelsofScience · 13/05/2019 10:40

LaraLily that's the kind of offensive shit I just posted about, she doesn't look like a 'white woman who's had a hot holiday'.

LaraLily90 · 13/05/2019 10:42

I think she does and so do plenty of people. If we didn’t know her mother was black, we wouldn’t know she was of mixed heritage

ChipSandwich · 13/05/2019 10:42

My mistake. PG tips, not typhoo tea. Not a brilliant advert obvs.

ajandjjmum · 13/05/2019 10:44

I am the last person to jump on the 'professionally offended' bandwagon, but I thought it was disgusting and obviously racist. He must be pretty badly read, if he didn't know that the DOS was mixed race.

NoSauce · 13/05/2019 10:44

TabbyMumz you’ve never heard or seen people referring black people to monkeys? You don’t understand why a racist would make that reference? Even my 13 year old was appalled at the photo when he saw it and understood immediately what Danny Baker was doing by posting that.

DoneLikeAKipper · 13/05/2019 10:47

MM doesn’t look black, she just looks like a white woman who’s had a hot holiday

Fucking hell. This is precisely what I meant earlier by the type of racism people think is ok. It doesn’t matter what you think her skin colour looks like, you know she’s mixed raced, everyone does. Putting down her heritage down to looking like she’s spent a couple of weeks sunning herself in Benidorm is disgraceful.

TabbyMumz · 13/05/2019 10:47

Nosauce....no, it's not something people generally do where I live / work. I don't understand the connection really. I literally thought it meant the child was part of a (media) circus.

RiversDisguise · 13/05/2019 10:48

I am sceptical that someone would throw away their career being deliberately racist at the age of 61.

I think his explanation is plausible but of course the Zeitgeist is to castigate, sack, hound- over a Tweet.

He should have known better and I feel sorry for him.

Lifecraft · 13/05/2019 10:48

Even my 13 year old was appalled at the photo when he saw it and understood immediately what Danny Baker was doing by posting that.

Nope, he's guessing at what Baker was doing by posting that. As we all are. Only Danny Baker knows for sure what he was thinking. The rest of us are just condemning him or excusing him based on what we think.

None of us know for sure, but at least I know I don't know.

NurseButtercup · 13/05/2019 10:50

I think she does and so do plenty of people. If we didn’t know her mother was black, we wouldn’t know she was of mixed heritage

What kind of defenceless bs is this? Everyone and his dog knows that her mother is a black woman. The media has made sure that everybody knows. Stop talking rubbish.

MrsBethel · 13/05/2019 10:51

Again, people are conflating two things:

  • their perception of Meghan's skin and
  • her experience of being mixed race

Meghan Markle grew up in America, which is a much more racist country than the UK, with a black mother and darker skin that some people and I'm sure she suffered from discrimination.

But, yes, her skin isn't actually very dark, and just to look at her you wouldn't necessarily guess she is mixed race.

These two things aren't contradictory if you really think about it.

Lifecraft · 13/05/2019 10:52

It doesn’t matter what you think her skin colour looks like, you know she’s mixed raced, everyone does.

No they don't. You completely underestimate the level of apathy some people have over royalty, and celebrity nonsense in general.

I doubt either of my adult sons would have even known who MM was until this story hit the headlines. Let alone what her mother looks like. They have zero interest in such things.

CitadelsofScience · 13/05/2019 10:53

@Donelikeakipper it's abhorrent isn't it? I really can't believe people think it's acceptable to say things like this.

I tan very well, I'm white and when I'm tanned I do indeed look like a white person who's been on a hot holiday. MM does not and never will because she's black. I despair that people can't see the racism in a comment like Lara made.

coldsyrup · 13/05/2019 10:58

it is a racist comment! no 2 ways about itWink

NoSauce · 13/05/2019 11:00

Nope, he's guessing at what Baker was doing by posting that. As we all are. Only Danny Baker knows for sure what he was thinking

My comment was to a poster who said she’d never associate black people being compared to a monkey, my point was that even my 13 year old could and did make the connection.

Alsohuman · 13/05/2019 11:00

What he intended is completely irrelevant. That abhorrent tweet was perceived to be racist by a the vast majority of people who saw it. Perception is all.

Can we stop comparing him with people who aren’t employed by the BBC? Neither Dubeke nor Sugar could be sacked by the Beeb because they don’t employ them, they’re contracted to production companies.

ajandjjmum · 13/05/2019 11:01

Lifecraft
I would be horrified if my adult son didn't know who MM was, as it would suggest that he was completely out of touch with what is happening in the world.

RiversDisguise · 13/05/2019 11:01

Nurse.... some people don't watch the BBC or Sky News for that reason. We hate celeb and royal twaddle.

Much easier to get news online.

Coyoacan · 13/05/2019 11:02

But when he sees a cute pic of a dressed-u chimp, all he sees is 'cute pic of dressed up chimp' because he likes chimps, he grew up with the PG Tips ads, and dressing up famous people, regardless of colour, as animals is one of his themes

Oh ffs. Now he's too old to be racist, which is unusual twist of the usual mumsnet ageism. I'm the same generation as he is and that image as totally racist.

DoneLikeAKipper · 13/05/2019 11:02

I doubt either of my adult sons would have even known who MM was until this story hit the headlines. Let alone what her mother looks like. They have zero interest in such things

I refuse to believe that any British adult wouldn’t know who Meghan was. Do they not know who Harry is either? Do they never open a news article ever? Pull the other one.

TabbyMumz · 13/05/2019 11:05

No sauce....Im sorry your 13 year old made that connection. That's quite a shame. I showed it to my 13 year old, and he didn't. Whether this is a regional thing or what, I don't know, but I don't think it's something that instantly springs to mind to a lot of people. (Ie referring black people to monkeys). And I spent quite a few years in Africa myself.

LuckyLou7 · 13/05/2019 11:07

Good grief. There are some strange folk about. Why on earth would anyone support Baker's blatant racism?
