My DH calls bedding bedclothes. AIBU to think that he needs professional help?

my friend used to take the piss because I said 'personal stereo' instead of 'Walkman'! She probably had a point!

SilverySurfer · 10/05/2019 21:43

Bedding is what you buy for a hamster or rabbit. Your DH is right to call them bedclothes. I also call a swimsuit a bathing costume.

Hanumantelpiece · 10/05/2019 21:43

'Beds' or 'bedcovers' here.

InfiniteCurve · 10/05/2019 21:44

Bedclothes.Bedding is for small rodents,or for gardens!

Debsdp · 10/05/2019 21:45

My husband used to call his mobile phone, his telephone. He soon stopped when his 4 sons kept asking him where his telephonic communication device was. I think he got the message!

Supersimpkin · 10/05/2019 21:47

Bathing suit, not bathing costume.

BaaBaaBaaMoo · 10/05/2019 21:49

Mine drives me nuts.
Shovel instead of dustpan! Kids saying it now too.
Porch instead of conservatory/ sunroom.
Completely mispronounces wasps!

HazelNutinEveryBite · 10/05/2019 21:49

My elderly Mother was admitted to hospital as an emergency last year. She need clothing so DD wrote a list, one of the items was "the birthing gown". Turned out it was a very old and treasured candlewick dressing gown, which had been purchased to have her first child in 1959.

Cherrysoup · 10/05/2019 21:49

Bedding=what I put down for the horse.

Laniakea · 10/05/2019 21:50

bed linen
dressing gown
swimming costume
knickers & underpants

IncrediblySadToo · 10/05/2019 21:52

I call them all manner of things, same with swimming stuff.

Bedclothes is perfectly fine.

KaleidoscopeEyes · 10/05/2019 21:53

I thought bedclothes meant pyjamas! Every day's a school day.

My mum bought me a bed jacket for Christmas at my request. It's furry and warm and lush, one of my favourite items of clothing ever.

I say knickers and pants.

mistermagpie · 10/05/2019 21:53

My old boss used to call his mobile phone his smartphone. Like 'oh has anyone seen my smartphone?', it made me cringe every time!

TheInvestigator · 10/05/2019 21:53

Always said bedclothes (I’m 29 so not an old posh person).

QuestionableMouse · 10/05/2019 21:54

I use it too.

MaryBoBary · 10/05/2019 21:54

When staying with my uncle he mentioned that he'd left a "bath sheet" in the bathroom for me and I had no idea what he was talking about.

Just say a big towel!

GBroGal · 10/05/2019 21:55

DH was a police officer. One day in court he forgot the word for his "watch" whilst giving evidence. He said "I consulted my timepiece, my Lord".

cdtaylornats · 10/05/2019 21:56

People use proper English - Mumsnet in meltdown.

poundoflard · 10/05/2019 21:56

Never heard of bed clothes, I'm in the south west. Is it a north south divide thing?
Its bed linen or sheets.
Bedding would be the duvet, pillow etc. But to complicate matters we call duvets : doonas.

Dillydallyingthrough · 10/05/2019 21:58

I don't know why but HazelNutinEveryBite post has made me feel all warm and fuzzy - it's so sweet.

PlatypusPie · 10/05/2019 21:59

I would say ‘ I’ll get the sheets from the cupboard to change the bedclothes ‘

If I need new sheets I will buy them from the bedding department.

If I need new duvet covers, I will go and buy these items of bed linen from the bedding department.

I love the nuance of the English language!

Mustgetonwithit · 10/05/2019 21:59

Someone I know says beddings....always adds the s - but to be fair she is french do could be a linguistical mistake....it irritates me though...

GruciusMalfoy · 10/05/2019 22:02

I'd say bedding if I was talking about the duvets and pillows. Bedclothes is fine!

DelusionalDog · 10/05/2019 22:03

my DH calls glass drinking glasses "tumblers". and the fridge is the "refridgerator". so he goes in the refridgerator for orange juice to pour into his tumbler.

im aware thats what theyre called but it really gives me the rage.

Chottie · 10/05/2019 22:03

MaryBo towels labelled as bath sheets are sold in JL.
