My DH calls bedding bedclothes. AIBU to think that he needs professional help?

OP posts:

Bed clothes.
Pyjamas are night attire.

WhereYouLeftIt · 10/05/2019 23:24

It's an old-fashioned term, but your DH is correct, not demented! Grin

ZigglesAndPaws · 10/05/2019 23:34

@Baa

‘Completely mispronounces wasps!’

How?!?

wigglybeezer · 10/05/2019 23:35

I know people in Scotland who call swimming costumes "dookers", which I love the sound of.

puppy23 · 10/05/2019 23:36

I say bedding - I must be a hamster!

justarandomtricycle · 10/05/2019 23:40

Bedclothes is correct. Bedding is what you do in the bed.

uce

DH says “ I need some new clothing “ instead of clothes. Drives me mad.

You are both being U, just say raiment or garb like normal people.

ElevenOhFive · 10/05/2019 23:42

Indeed it is, @bridgetreilly, but a continental quilt on the other hand...

Miljah · 10/05/2019 23:43

C'mon! Manchester is obvious! A major site for weaving bed linen (and everything else)! In dark, Satanic mills!

That's why Australian departmental stores have a section called 'Manchester'.

'Hi,could you direct me to the Manchester, please?'

'No worries, first floor on the left'.

And swimming attire is 'togs'.

Miljah · 10/05/2019 23:44

Continental quilt?? Duvet?...

Nah, in my semi-Aussie house it's a doonah.

goingtotown · 10/05/2019 23:49

MIL buys her rations at Tesco & listens to The Light Programme (Radio 2) Drives me nuts.

Hecateh · 10/05/2019 23:53

I change the beds but I wash the sheets in both cases it refers to sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers.

Bedding fine but have never referred to bedclothes

and it's swimming costume to me

Yorkshire born and bred but Mum from the North East.

My australian rellies call the quilt the Doona

miranda1511 · 10/05/2019 23:54

My husband calls the stapler a staple gun!! It infuriates me Hmm

Soverytiredofeverythinggoingon · 11/05/2019 00:01

Bed linen/bed clothes, stuff that goes on the bed, sheets, blankets, duvet etc
Nightclothes/nightwear for stuff you sleep in
Bed jacket, short cardi thing to wear in bed because houses were very cold if you were confined to bed and sitting up
Dressing gown to wear over night clothes/pj/ nighty
Swimming costume, thing you wear to swim in
Bedding is what my animals sleep on out in the barn/stable/henhouse etc
Bedding plants, annuals you plant out in a temporary bed of soil in the garden, for a seasonal burst of colour (I don't use them, can't stand them, grow insect attracting perennials or annual wild flowers!)

Soverytiredofeverythinggoingon · 11/05/2019 00:02

A stapler is a thing for holding sheets of paper together
A staple gun is a hell of a lot more serious!

Ticklingcheese · 11/05/2019 00:03

Scandi here, directly translated we call it bed clothes, as clothing for the bed.
Re. The doona thing, it may be from Danish 'dyne', so perhaps because the cold Nordic countries had them first or maybe it's a Viking thing 🤣.

frenchonion · 11/05/2019 00:04

Omg what's wrong with dressing gown? What else would you call it? Housecoats are a different thing, with a zip. Bathers here, and bedclothes and bedding interchangeably, and we wear knicks and pants. I'm quite partial to putting on my loungewear after a long day too (translation: joggers and hoodie!)

frenchonion · 11/05/2019 00:07

Gbrogal timepiece 😂

BrylcreamBeret · 11/05/2019 00:08

Ex boyfriend from Reading many moons back corrected me when I pointed out that a cinema was selling sugar mice with the other sweets as I hadn't seen them for years. He looked me dead in the eye and said 'snack treats'. Wanker.

nancy75 · 11/05/2019 00:10

DH calls the quilt a doonah, and a cool bag is an esky, he’s an Aussie & has loads of daft words for things ( Dd & I just keep him around the house to amuse us with his silly sayings Grin )

MsTSwift · 11/05/2019 00:12

Two things I say that baffle / annoy dh - sponge bag (he says wash bag) and unit (for the kitchen island). Both were normal in my family

MyBlueMoonbeam · 11/05/2019 00:13

Duvet was Doona in our house too coz my (much older) sister discovered them whilst living in Hong Kong in the late 70s so we were well ahead of the curve by the time a "Continental Quilt" was a thing - call them duvets now though.

I change the bed/sheets/covers depending on my mood & also use the term bed clothes too on occasion.

Swimming costume growing up in Berkshire - swimming togs now I live in Ireland.

Trainers are "runners" here so I say that now too 😆

It's a dressing gown unless made of towelling then it's a robe.

carolannduffycheerup · 11/05/2019 00:14

I win. My DH calls condoms "prophylactics."

MyBlueMoonbeam · 11/05/2019 00:14

Oooo sponge bag - that's what we said too - Mum was from Yorkshire maybe that's why?

MyBlueMoonbeam · 11/05/2019 00:18

@Ticklingcheese yes yes - it was Denmark that sister found doonas - I was confused - so we had them in the early 70s before she went to H.K (her DH was in the RAF) 😅

butterflykiss00 · 11/05/2019 00:20

Bedding
Underwear
Dressing gown
Swimming costume
