Mine calls them all sheets, and the wardrobes cupboards

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 10/05/2019 22:36

I change the sheets or the beds. I would buy bedlinen, but I would hide under the bedclothes, or maybe the duvet.

Pinkarsedfly · 10/05/2019 22:36

Thanks resispa

That’s blown my mind, that has Confused

Katinski · 10/05/2019 22:39

thinking about 'bed linen' - mine's cotton/polyester mix, so I'm going to stick with 'sheets'..

Ellie56 · 10/05/2019 22:39

Bed clothes/bedding mean the same thing.

en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/bedclothes

dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/bedclothes

Ohnothetellyisntworking · 10/05/2019 22:39

I just say I'm changing the bed, or, I'm putting the sheets back on. I find bedding preferable to bed clothes. If you browse shops online it's called bedding, to mean sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases.

Dh calls a throw or blanket a 'rug'. I'm cold, he'll tell me to put the rug over myself. Makes me irrationally angry.

In laws call the dcs swimming stuff their swimming gear. I know technically this is correct, but i hate it. Just say swimming stuff ffs.

It's breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tea is a drink.

MitziK · 10/05/2019 22:41

Probably because Manchester isn't in Bedfordshire.

Bedclothes are what you kick off in the night because it's too hot.

Bed linen is what you get out of the airing cupboard.

A dressing gown is what you put on to slump around the house because you're male and feeling a little peaky.

Bath sheets are the big ones that are draped over the airer to dry after retrieving them from the floor where they've been abandoned.

A flannel is made of towelling except when it's a sheet or a shirt. A towel is made of Terry. As is a dressing gown, unless it's made of silk when it's a robe.

Tea is both a meal and a drink. You can have Tea with Tea. but Tea Time is different from Teatime, as it happens multiple times in the day. And a Tea Cake is different from a Teacake but neither are had with the meal known as Tea - they are served with lots of hot tea, though. Unless it's High Tea. Or Tea in a Tea Room.

HBStowe · 10/05/2019 22:47

We call them bedclothes too, sorry!

icanhearapindrop · 10/05/2019 22:48

I irrationally hate the word duvet. I cannot bear it when DH says it, and I am training the DC to use the word quilt instead. No idea why though!

yumyumpoppycat · 10/05/2019 22:49

I say bedclothes, dh says bed linen.

My dh also calls kitchen towel serviettes which I find annoying!

What is wrong with saying underpants Confused actually {whispers} dh calls his underpants 'knickers' … weird.

I think my dh is worse that yours op Grin

AudacityOfHope · 10/05/2019 22:52

@FrauleinF I would kill your husband stone dead.

Nephilim1964 · 10/05/2019 22:54

He's beyond help

BoswellsBollocks · 10/05/2019 22:56

The only thing dh says that drives me mad is using the term ‘whet my whistle’

Makes me want to scream.

mathanxiety · 10/05/2019 23:00

Swimsuit here, or togs/swimming togs.

Blanket/throw/rug interchangeable if it's something kept on the couch to wrap up in on a chilly night. 'Rug' specifically called for if it's a textile on the floor. There is also 'the Afghan', made of crocheted granny squares, usually used for wrapping yourself up in on the couch.

Dressing gown is what I say but my American DCs all say robe. Bed clothes or bedding perfectly fine and acceptable to all. The DCs don't say 'sheets' for all bed clothes/bedding but we have friends who do.

weegiemum · 10/05/2019 23:04

We refer to swimming costumes as "swimmies".

This has probably outed me as I've only ever heard it in my family.

ElevenOhFive · 10/05/2019 23:05

I generally say ‘duvet’, but sometimes I like a throwback to my 80s childhood and call it a ‘continental quilt’

MitziK · 10/05/2019 23:06

Oh! An ex - obviously full of his own self importance and wanting to be seen as something remarkable by any other female within earshot - would sidle across the supermarket aisle and loudly whisper 'DO YOU NEED ANY FEMININE HYGIENE PRODUCTS'. Giving him the usual reply of 'What? No.' then resulted in the 'You can tell me, I don't have a problem with it, I'M A MAN OF THE WORLD'.

Fuck's sake. He stopped when I replied - in my normal voice, which can carry some distance - 'No, I don't need any tampons right now, as I'm not currently menstruating, thank you. However, going by the state of the boxers you left on the bedroom floor instead of putting in the wash, you could do with picking up some more pile cream and a stain remover from the washing powder aisle, as I'm certainly not dealing with them.

SplendidDaysInTheGarden · 10/05/2019 23:06

In NI we call them bedclothes and keep them in the hotpress (had to explain to my English friends that this was the linen cupboard). My DP insists on saying push-bike instead of just bike or bicycle. Drives me nuts. He also picks up the dog's number two, instead of poo. And actually called it fetid matter the other day. Arrgh!!

OldAndWornOut · 10/05/2019 23:07

I don't believe the word "underpants" has ever crossed my lips.

Troels · 10/05/2019 23:10

Manchester? Has Australia completly lost the plot? Never in a million years would I have figured that one out.

Troels · 10/05/2019 23:11

Swimmies are armband floatation things in my family.

BugEyedBeans · 10/05/2019 23:14

We used to call duvets 'downies' when they first came in

bridgetreilly · 10/05/2019 23:16

A quilt is a different thing from a duvet, though.

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 10/05/2019 23:18

I'm still laughing out loud at consulting my timepiece...Grin

Antigon · 10/05/2019 23:18

i just say plain old bed sheets.
