To ask how much rent you pay?

I was reading this Mumsnet thread about how much mumsnetters were paying each month on rent (2014) www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2049466-To-wonder-just-how-much-rent-you-people-are-paying?pg=1&order=

And I was quite shocked at how high rent rates were back in 2014. Now I am wondering how bad it is five years later?

I rent a 3 bed semi detached house in Warwickshire for £440 a month, in a good area with good schools. How about you?

@AngieBolen

This is like the MN chicken feeding a family of 4 for 3 days.

I also live in Warwickshire, in a nice area with good schools. A 3 bed semi would be at least £800pm, and this town isn't particularly expensive compared to neighbouring Warwickshire towns.

Sometimes I think I live in a parallel universe when I read MN.

Why do you find cheaper rents so hard to believe? Confused Some 3 and 4 bed semi detached houses ARE £450 to £500 a month rent, if it's council housing/housing association. Sometimes in fairly decent, (or even very nice) areas too. Even down south (where private let is usually more expensive,) social housing is not much more than £550 to £600 a month for a semi/terraced house or big 2/3 bed flat.

I know a couple who pay £345 a month for a 2 bed bungalow in a village in North Staffs. It's a housing association who have 19 homes in their housing stock, in the village of 57 homes, and the area is stunning. They said they will never leave. Can't blame them really. But yeah, these rents do exists, but it's usually for social housing. The private rent amount is usually about 35 to 40% more.

pirateshipsinking · 04/05/2019 17:38

2800euro for a 2/3 bed apartment in (fairly) central Amsterdam. It's a big spacious apartment and the area is quite nice but nothing posh!

Shoxfordian · 04/05/2019 17:40

1450 for 2 bedrooms near Richmond

Xenia · 04/05/2019 17:47

Paying student child's rent of £490 a month (one room in a shared house).

coffeeandpyjamas · 04/05/2019 17:47

£485 for a 2 bed flat in Norwich city centre. It’s HA & I’m very grateful as private rents for a similar property in the area start at £800ish.

Ostwich · 04/05/2019 17:55

In 2010 I rented a 2 up 2 down terrace for £600, 18 months ago the same house was on the market for £950!

We pay £1200 for a 3 bed semi.

Both in Kent.

GrizzlebumsMum · 04/05/2019 17:58

£1,770 for a one bed in a massively regenerated part of East London Confused. Makes me feel sick how much we pay but I’ve loved living in the area. We’re moving next week!

FloofyDoof · 04/05/2019 18:02

3 bed flat in medium sized town in Hertfordshire, one double bedroom, two very small singles. Very small flat, open kitchen and sitting room, very small windowless bathroom, no central heating just electric storage heaters, no outdoor space. £762 per month, and that's housing association not private rent.

SarahAndQuack · 04/05/2019 18:03

600pcm for a big three-bed in North Yorkshire. Definitely feel lucky, though it was an absolute state when we moved in.

unicorncupcake · 04/05/2019 18:11

12 years ago I we paid £1000 pcm to rent a 2 bedroom flat in a lovely bit of south west London. Have just checked and an identical flat on the next road is now £1600 pcm...

bouncealeen · 04/05/2019 18:14

£875 for 3 bed semi in Devon, including water & electric. It’s on the cheaper side for what we saw around here, but it’s a bit grotty.

We rent out our 4 bed semi in a pleasant enough but not posh bit of Manchester for £950.

blue25 · 04/05/2019 18:16

Used to pay £1500 a month rent for 2 bed flat in London. Now have a £750 a month mortgage for a 3 bed house!

LakieLady · 04/05/2019 18:28

Even down south (where private let is usually more expensive,) social housing is not much more than £550 to £600 a month for a semi/terraced house or big 2/3 bed flat.

It varies a lot between council housing and so-called "affordable" housing. A lot of new social housing is built by housing associations and let at a rent equivalent to the local housing allowance (the maximum that housing benefit/UC will pay). Because the amount is based on local rents, it's surprisingly high. A 3-bed house will be £229 a week, which is about £1,000 a month.

Still cheaper than private rents though. A 3-bed house in my road was on Rightmove for £1,500 a month, and these houses are pretty small.

LakieLady · 04/05/2019 18:31

Sorry, should have said, that's in Sussex.

SherlockHolmes · 04/05/2019 18:36

1 bed flats in my town rent for about £550. My daughter pays 650 for a tiny 1 bed house.
