Frasier Was Better Than Friends

Niles with baby the bird stuck on his head. Niles setting fire to Frasier's apartment. Niles scoring from the halfway line. Kelsey Grammer's wonderful overacting. The lovely autumnal colours. The clever dialogue. The list goes on

Niles and Daphne were better than Ross and Rachel.

Aibu? No I'm not 😀

The six 'friends' started off like normal twenty somethings but gradually got more stupid as the series went on. They were more mature in season one than ten.

I don't know why but Frasier is just very comforting and cosy as well as being wonderfully written and cast.

Frasier was brilliant
Seinfeld though was the pinnacle of comedy for the 90s I don't think anything has come close since then.

HeronLanyon · 04/05/2019 09:22

lucillebluth totally agree about the autumnal colours. Watching friends recently led me to long distracting thoughts about lighting and why on earth both apartments didn’t have lamps or lower lighting !

isabellerossignol · 04/05/2019 09:25

Lilleth, in both Frasier and Cheers is one of my favourite TV characters ever. Although my all time favourite is Selina Myers in VEEP.

AmericanHousewifeFan · 04/05/2019 09:26

I like Friends but I love Frasier. I love Marty Cranes "why'd you do it son?" I say it most days.

NewSchoolNewName · 04/05/2019 09:26

I love Frasier. Except for the episodes with Daphne’s family.

I think it’s definitely aged better than Friends.

HeyMicky · 04/05/2019 09:26

Frasier was far superior. If you fancy listening to some fans do an analysis as to why it so, Mikes Jupp was just on the Ryle of 3 podcast talking about it

Thehop · 04/05/2019 09:27

Frasier was absolutely brilliant. Closely followed by modern family.

WhatNowRandy · 04/05/2019 09:29

YANBU - Friends really hasn't aged well at all.

DonFatale · 04/05/2019 09:29

YANBU, Frasier is the best US sitcom ever.

EauDeReality · 04/05/2019 09:32

That's true, friends got more ridiculous as time went on. Frasier was always brilliant.

But the premise of two brothers, their profession, and their grounded dad and his dog isn't 'forced' to move forward in the same way as 6 childfree single twenty somethings all housesharing.

I loved Ros and Niles relationship! So funny!

Loved when Ros was pregant and her the father's parents came to see her and they both had enormous enormous noses. when she mentioned it to her baby's father he said ''oh yeh, I had a nose job when I was sixteen''

Pk37 · 04/05/2019 09:32

Definitely! Friends was funny but they’ve shown them to death now .
Frasier was hilarious as is Everybody loves Raymond

sackrifice · 04/05/2019 09:33

"Put your brother on. PUT YOUR BROTHER ON!!!!"

Classic.

I loved all 3 at the time, we used to get Friends early as a friend's friend in the States used to video it for her and send it so we would have parties and watch 3 hours of episodes in one go.

But Frasier and Seinfeld I still watch regularly all these years later.

PillowTalker · 04/05/2019 09:33

One word..... Raymond...... trumps them all

StillCoughingandLaughing · 04/05/2019 09:35

I love both, but I think Frasier pips it for me. The writing is better and more natural; Friends characters seem to speak in punchlines at times. Also I think it helps that Frasier was never a ‘fashionable-looking’ show; it hasn’t dated in the same way Friends has in that sense. You look at some of the clothes and the hair in the early episodes and it almost looks as dated as things like Man About the House did in the nineties.

I also think Friends had more duff episodes in later years than Frasier did (although anything with Cam Winston signals time to put the kettle on). How desperate to get to the pub we’re the Friends writers when they came up with Joey and Ross napping together? Or Phoebe mugging Ross as a teenager?

Dandelion1993 · 04/05/2019 09:36

You're wrong.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/05/2019 09:37

Frasier still funny.
Friends embarrassing (and shockingly homophobic when watched now along with other Shock moments that make me wonder why it was ever funny)
Seinfeld better than them both
Curb Your Enthusiasm best ever

Frasier is genius, although over the last few years thanks to Channel 4 I've discovered Everybody Loves Raymond which passed me by when it first aired. Absolutely brilliant and seems underrated but much better than Friends (which I loved too but hasn't aged well).

StillCoughingandLaughing · 04/05/2019 09:40

Daphne's family were awful and English accents are all wrong. Considering two of the main cast members were English I'm not really sure how they got it so wrong.

I wonder if Jane Leeves was always conscious of what happened to Lisa Maxwell. She was the favourite for the part of Daphne, but when she was screen testing she kept picking up on things in the script and saying ‘A British person wouldn’t say it like this’. It was not considered helpful by producers - hence she ended up in The Bill and Loose Women.

CheeseFace · 04/05/2019 09:43

Frasier is the best of all sitcoms, YANBU.

Bluestitch · 04/05/2019 09:43

Yes I think this too. That's also the problem I had with Will and Grace, it seemed to just be punchline after punchline with a wait for the laugh.

Both Frasier and Raymond have the characters written so well that you can anticipate their reactions to normal stuff, and normal dialogue becomes funny and just a facial expression can make you laugh.

mrswhiplington · 04/05/2019 09:45

Love the episode where Frasier and Niles think they are related to Russian royalty. Martin takes a clock to the Antiques Roadshow and as soon as they find out it might be valuable they are inching their way onto the camera. It turns out they are actually related to the scullery maid.Grin

Morgan12 · 04/05/2019 09:45

Some boys go to college
We think they're all Wussies
Cause they get all the knowledge
And we get all the dum de dum de dum da dum

MuffinMad · 04/05/2019 09:48

The scene in Frasier where Nile's is in the toilet and comes out covered in foam.

Martin deduces that the canister has exploded.

Daphne pipes up "He used to be a detective, y'know!"

Funniest moment ever for me. Love Frasier.
