To sneak a McDonald's into the cinema

Would it be wrong to sneak a big mac and fries into the cinema? I usually just take a bag of sweets and bottle of water. I refuse to pay the cinema prices for food. The film I want to see tomorrow is 3 hours long, plus 30 minutes or so of adverts. It starts at 11.30am. Do you take your own food into the cinema?

Last time I was at the cinema someone had an entire 14" pizza topped with what smelled like rotting garlic. Unfortunately he was just slightly too far away for me to say anything (but not far away that the unbelievable stench couldn't reach me). Ages ago I went to a live screening of Richard III with Ralph Fiennes and a teenage boy next to me noisily devoured a slushy drink through the first ten minutes. "Now is the wisluuuuuuurp content, made sluuuuurpsummer ..." The temptation to upend it in his lap was only defeated by the knowledge that the resulting noise would be even more annoying. Don't get me started of sweets being unwrapped excruciatingly slowly to extend the noise as long as possible to try and be quiet.

Only silent, odour free food should be eaten and drunk in cinemas. Better still eat before of after, not during. Nobody starves or suffers from dehydration over the duration of a film.

Well I don't know what they're putting in your McDonalds but they certainly don't stink, unlike the hotdogs with onions, nachos & poocorn that cinemas sell.
Popcorn stinks & I can smell it at 50 paces & salt & vinegar crisps too.
Perhaps I have an usual sense of smell.

They certainly do, much more than the other food you mention.

Zduse · 03/05/2019 20:40

I've sat in a cinema lorry with someone chomping some kind of curried fish dish before Hmm.
Non smelly/cold snacks are the best.

Ragwort · 03/05/2019 20:41

I don’t understand why people can’t watch a film without snacking (& I am a very greedy person who enjoys my food a lot Grin). I went to the cinema this afternoon and the noise, rustling & chomping sounds just from people eating sweets and slurping drinks is horrendous, I always forget how hideous it is. Angry.

Could be worse though, I sat down to watch Red Joan & wondered why there were so many young people in the cinema, quickly realised I was in the wrong screening as they were all there for Avengers Grin.

Macdonalds do smell strong, especially burgers.

PottyPotterer · 03/05/2019 20:44

I can't stand anyone taking stinky food into the cinema but I don't suppose a McDonald's is any worse than those stinky nachos and disgusting cheese dips they sell, and they're louder! I had someone sit next to me with those at the last avengers film and had to sit with my hand over my face whilst gagging until they finished. Unbelievably selfish. Just take a sandwich but not egg or tuna.

Babysharkdoodoodoodo · 03/05/2019 20:46

Go to an Everyman cinema. They bring burger and fries to your seat Grin

Allyg1185 · 03/05/2019 20:47

Just go beforehand. Someone brought in a Greggs last time I was at the cinema and I was a bit Hmm at that. It was stinking of onions

Calatonia · 03/05/2019 20:48

YWBVVU
If you don't want to wait until after the film to eat, then eat before you go: you could have brunch.
If there is no alternative take something that doesn't stink and doesn't make a noise or a mess.
Our cinema has a "no hot food" policy and it's when I read posts like yours I'm glad they do!

thelastgoldeneagle · 03/05/2019 20:49

If the cinema sells nachos - the most inappropriate food to eat in the dark - then I don’t see the problem with taking in McDonald’s! But it will stink. Take something more sociable.

dudsville · 03/05/2019 20:49

This thread reminded me that for some reason we once made a meal, at home, and took it into the cinema. It was fun. I can't remember what the food was but we had lidded plastic pots and spoons!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/05/2019 20:49

I’m surprised some of you manage anything socially with your heightened olfactory acuity
Do you carry pomanders?attend hyperosmia support groups to cope with All that gagging, wretching, mouth covering, feeling sick in proximity of fast food

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 03/05/2019 20:52

I once brought some secret Maccy D chips into the children’s ward for my poorly daughter. It’s all she wanted to eat after a fair few days of having nothing. Blimey the smell was so obvious here was no hiding it from the doctors! (She was allowed to eat I just thought they would judge me for feeding her shit!)

ghostyslovesheets · 03/05/2019 20:53

most cinemas don't allow you to take in your own hot food - take in butties !

SuperSara · 03/05/2019 20:54

To be honest, I’d be tempted to take something like a nice fresh quinoa salad - Waitrose do some lovely ones.

It will be far less smelly, still filling and more wholesome.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/05/2019 20:55

Can’t let that cracker pass without comment
Haha yes petition for immobile viewing, no audible responses, and zen like silence

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/05/2019 20:56

Some pps say they stink & I say they don't .
We'll have to agree to disagree about the McDonalds then.

VickyEadie · 03/05/2019 20:56

The smell of McDonalds makes me heave. Please take something less stinky.

HoustonBess · 03/05/2019 21:05

Ew no, the smell of rancid fat is awful.

Shelbybear · 03/05/2019 21:06

Oh god no. Snacks ok, hot food no. I wouldn't want to be sitting anywhere near u and I'd be giving u evils lol. Have ur mcds before u go in and take some snacks n drinks with u and enjoy.

StroppyWoman · 03/05/2019 21:08

Food sales in cinemas are extremely expensive, but they are to help cinemas stay in business. Most of them are operating on very small margins.
Either eat before or cough up.
Bringing hot food - especially hot greasy food which really smells - is unacceptable and disrespectful to everyone else who boughts a ticket.

PrincessCessy · 03/05/2019 21:10

YABU, cinemas don’t make money on their tickets for the first few weeks of a new release. It’s all on the snacks. Having lived through many cinema closures, please support them.

And of course you want a Tango Ice Blast!

Failing that, sneaking in hot food is banned because no one wants to smell it

HavelockVetinari · 03/05/2019 21:13

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when people can't go 3 hours without a full meal - "snacks be damned, none of your popcorn for me, only a hot meal will do!"

Some people are greedy, entitled feckers unfortunately.
