Well done op

Good luck OP.

I'm a bit surprised at the people accusing us of puritanism, etc. Nearly all of us are talking from personal experience. But then I was never in denial, even when I drank.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 01/05/2019 15:09

Well done OPFlowers

goldenchicken · 01/05/2019 16:34

Good luck to you OP!

extrastrongnosugar · 01/05/2019 17:27

I know the feeling, falling into a bottle just because the willpower is already worn out at night.
Becks 00 alcoholfree beer feels totally real and really does the trick.
Or buying those little prosecco bottles

It's after reading this thread this morning that led me to read the Allen Carr book today. I really recommend it op. Good luck with gp.

KentdonMum · 01/05/2019 17:55

Sounds like an expensive habit! Whilst I think it's probably true that you're not physically reliant on it, you could be mentally if you're truly honest with yourself?

I've had phases where I am drinking out of habit (e.g. it's Friday/the weekend etc) or because it takes the edge off a stressful day at work BUT in my heart of hearts, I know that's not a very positive way to use alcohol. I gave up booze (and snacking outside meals/sweet treats) for lent and it was really good to break my bad habits of low level medicating with alcohol and comfort eating. I'm determined not to slip back into them.

lookingelsewhere · 01/05/2019 18:34

Allen Carr book is very good, yes.

SweetMarmalade · 01/05/2019 18:54

I find the habit part the hardest.

While I’m busy during the day I don’t give it another thought. Once I’m settled down for the evening I imagine something lovely and cold waiting for me in the fridge. It’s the evenings for me.

I will take a look at some of the books suggested. I gave up smoking almost ten years ago, would have thought giving up or at least cutting down on alcohol would be easier. Nope!

Good luck OP Flowers

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 01/05/2019 19:01

OP I'm so proud of you, you've taken that first step.
There's some lovely, caring advice on this thread and I'm glad you've been able to see that amongst the judgmental posts.
It's a great thing you're doing for yourself.

Mammyloveswine · 01/05/2019 19:13

I have at least a glass most nights... i am.aware that its become a habit though and have downloaded the "couch to 5k" app to do instead... ive also started having a gin instead as the tonic fills me up. Small steps but trying to just be sensible. A bottle is a lot but i can see how it can happen. I COULD easily drink a bottle without feeling too pissed. I quite often buy the half bottles and find drinking that gives me the "feeling" of finishing a bottle. Could that be a way to cut down without feeling like your depriving yourself of your "treat"?

Im not going to call you an alcoholic as i think you've just slipped into a bad habit. Im the same but i recognise the fact.

Thankssomuch · 01/05/2019 19:14

It’s a bit much.

CraicMammy · 01/05/2019 19:26

I’d recommend Ceder 0% gin if anyone is interested in alternatives. It is really tasty and has that satisfying kick. It’s handy for the stressful trying days, when I feel “I NEED a Gin” the best bit being as its alcohol free, I can have a giant G&T and make it REALLY strong. That and a bottle of emergency tonic and a sack of ice, does the trick for me!

Schuyler · 01/05/2019 19:54

You’ve had some harsh comments but you’ve taken them with good grace. You should be very proud of yourself for taking the first step to see your GP. You deserve to be happy and healthy. Flowers

ChristmasFluff · 01/05/2019 20:39

Well done OP!

I used to drink at least a bottle of wine every night, just because of socialising. Then as I hit 28ish, I just couldn't do it. Began to hate the fuzzy head feeling. Became a weekend drinker.

As I got into my late 40s, I wasn't even enjoying that really - even a small amount of drink would mean writing off the next day.

I now drink only on special occasions, and I do still overdo it at times, like Christmas. But mostly I am very lightweight.

I often drive now when I go out, and that means I can't drink, so it's highly preferable. And it really helps with the calorie count.

You won't regret it, OP. Life is just MORE on a clear head.

And for chilling out in the evening, I love a herbal tea - it has a bit of sharpness like a wine, and it is warm.

Graphista · 01/05/2019 20:56

Well done in making the first step op.

Wishing you much better health going forward, look after yourself

countrygirl99 · 01/05/2019 21:04

Well done OP. I hope it all works out for you. Keep your eye on the prize.

Jodie571 · 01/05/2019 21:17

Wow I think you should cut down. I’m having a glass and I feel bad mid week lol.

Think of the calories and fuzzy head it’ll give you. Also liver damage.

Not good. Sorry

ShopoholicIn · 01/05/2019 21:53

All the best OP. you have taken first steps to recovery now. its very brave of u to post this.
I have skated some of the comments with my dad who has been an alcoholic drinking daily for as long as i can remember. He did quit 3 years back when he was developing some health issues n was sober for an year or so.. But has started drinking daily again...

All the very best to uFlowers

CarpeVitam · 01/05/2019 22:28

Well done OP. Well done.

CraicMammy · 01/05/2019 22:36

Best of luck! You won’t regret it x

Ferii · 02/05/2019 06:17

@Mum21beauty
I've made an emergency appointment with my doctors today to tackle my inner issues that are making me want to drink. Something has to change
This is fantastic, congratulations

Lolipop44 · 02/05/2019 06:32

There are such things as functioning alcoholics (not saying you are one but possibly are) but the idea of i don't need a drink in a morning so I'm not an alcoholic is bulls**t. A functioning alcoholic is someone who lives a completely normal life holds down a job has a home ect ect but needs that drink on an evening to unwind. Trust me i know because i was one of those people
