Don't want to make this a TAAT, so I'll just say I have enjoyed everyone's observations on the royal family and it's made a boring weekend go much quicker Grin

Please continue if you wish to......

He really does!

Fascinating - Lady Diana made an alliance with Kanga as they both realised Camilla/Charles was the most enduring connection Shock

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 15:33

Not only was it considered a bad move politically to do that, I think (and I'd save myself over a distant relative any day) but the Romanov DC were ill or quarantined when they could have gone, I believe, so missed their chance. The war and social had a huge personal impact on the royal family- so many relatives died and they were cut off from dear relatives across the divide. Letters were quietly passed via Princess Helena, who'd married someone neutral. Like them or not, that's a sad situation.

Another cross generation surpriser for you- Zita, the last Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary died in 1989. Her husband abdicated in 1918. She actually lived quite a hard life after his death.

More gender neutral baby outfits for Baby S (where are you, we are waiting!)

Sorry to be so bossy on this thread, but if you can spare the time please watch the video link I posted. If you don't know the whole story (and neither did I) it will seriously blow your mind! Shock

Whizzler · 29/04/2019 15:46

James Hewitt did ask me to supper in around 1988 but that's not what I'd regard as a particular feather in my cap

I read an interview with Hewitt a couple of years ago and it made me feel quite sorry for him. He'd had bouts of ill health and had fallen on hard times so had had to move in with his mother. Just seemed a long way from his glory days as a Jilly Cooper cad come to life.

Not that I'm blaming any of that on your turning down his offer of a date Grin

I always thought they went through Princess Margaret of Connaught, as she married into the Swedish royals and Sweden was neutral?

Helena had a more controversial marriage to Prince Christian. Her sister-in-law Alexandra never forgave her as there was dispute over the Schleswig and Holstein titles/dutchies with the Danes.

Whizzler · 29/04/2019 15:52

Oh wait, here's a pic of Hewitt from last summer. Obviously not ailing too much. You can't keep a horny old goat down!

Lyra- you're right. I mixed up their husbands, but Helena helped set up the "route", I think.

Queen Alexandra was a total cow to Princess Helena! I was shocked to find that out as Alexandra didn't seem the type!

It does go against the easy-going, kindly and accepting image that is generally portrayed of Alexandra!

Saavhi · 29/04/2019 16:35

This appears to be her favourite silhouette for some reason. Way too matronly. My mother (50) wouldn't even wear those dresses!

it's a bit like my Cocker's pedigree ... I love him very much but he's very, very dim

I guess that's what all that interbreeding does for you - just look at the Windsors!! Wink

@WillGymForPizza that's so true. They offered asylum and then withdrew it at the last minute.
Nickolas was a spineless wimp who should never have been in power and Alexandra was a hypochondriac with every ailment under the sun but the kids didn't deserve that death.

Does anyone remember seeing the Lost Prince the story of George an Mary`s youngest child who died at 13. So sad.

justasking111 · 29/04/2019 17:10

I also remember the forgotten cousins of the Queen Mother also very sad.

RubberTreePlant

I remember when it really dawned on me that the Romanov sisters (born between 1895 and 1901) & Alexei (born 1904) were the same generation as Mountbatten, Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor), George VI & siblings, The Queen Mother, and so on.

It's a very sobering thought that the Romanov children could have survived to see the 21st century.

I have never really thought of it like that. They died so long ago that it feels that they belong to a different time. But in different circumstances, they could have still been around in the last few decades.

I could read about the Romanovs all day long. Such interesting but tragic lives.

Can anyone recommend a book about queen Victoria's daughters please? Have had a look on Amazon but can't find much.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 17:26

@UnPocoLoco11- I think one/some of the DC were sick when they could have gone, so somewhat moot. Can't remember if they offered to take the DC but I believe the family also didn't want to be split up. Which was understandle but deadly. Can imagine the girls quite enjoying life free of the Tsarina though!

The Prince John story is very sad although I believe they did what they could for Johnnie at the time. The letters Edward VIII wrote about Johnnies death (including one to Queen Mary) show him up to be a vile human being. Queen Mary quite rightly wrote back with some disgust, reminding him that she had loved her son and had lost a child.

Can you share the story behind this. I looked online but couldn't find anything. Thanks Grin

I haven’t read the whole thread yet, so apologies if someone has already said this...

...obviously we all 💗 Meghan but why did she feel the need to announce her pregnancy at Eugenie’s wedding (or at least on the same day as) when it’s now obvious she wasn’t even 12 weeks pregnant?

That's interesting, I didn't know she did that. Unless the media was about to announce it for her and she wanted to get in there first. Otherwise it's a bit off to do it on someone else's wedding day!
