Unpopular opinion but AIBU to think that she is talking rubbish? She was on This Morning showing us all how to wash our face and telling us how bad face wipes are. Apparently they just move make up around your face, which is wrong interesting.
Considering it is basically her job to flog skincare, of course she is going to try and tell everyone to ditch them.
Prepared to be told otherwise but maybe she's just been using the wrong wipes 😁

I use Fushi camellia oil to cleanse with. It comes in glass bottles.

EntirelyAnonymised · 27/04/2019 23:18

My acid does too (The ordinary lactic 10%). The glass bottle and glass tube of the pipette are recyclable. The only thing that isn’t is the small rubber bit at the top of the pipette you squeeze to draw up and dispense the product.

My retinol comes in a metal tube with a tiny plastic screw lid (prescription cream).

The only thing that is plastic is my moisturiser which is in a sealed pump unit. In terms of non recyclable waste, I’m not producing much more than you are with your single moisturiser.

OverMoon · 27/04/2019 23:23

@OVAgroundWOMBlingfree Literally how are wipes any worse in a landfill than plastic and other household waste? I’ve never flushed a wipe in my life. Did you raise a baby just wiping up poo with cotton buds and water then? If so you’re a better person than me.

@Alsohuman Congratulations on your tin. You’ve not replied to the actually point of any of my posts. Do you really think that all women who wear makeup have to cleanse using special products or they’ll have bad skin? And that it’s a productive thing to go round telling women this?

popehilarious · 27/04/2019 23:27

Using a wipe to take off makeup is using a special product. It's a discrete bit of non-recyclable landfill that wouldn't otherwise get used.

popehilarious · 27/04/2019 23:29

Anyway I actually use a cheap plastic loo brush to remove my makeup. Got a cupboard full of them so I can bin them after one use....

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 27/04/2019 23:29

The sheer volume of wipes is completely unnecessary. 30-60 wipes a month Vs one bottle every 90 days (which can be recycled) is very different. Plus as displayed here many products now come in alternative packaging such as glass, cardboard (soaps) or metal.

Did you raise a baby just wiping up poo with cotton buds and water then?

I used reusable wipes with all of my children, yes. I understand people find that hard to do but I still think wipes should be banned.

OverMoon · 27/04/2019 23:41

@OVAgroundWOMBlingfree I’m really not an advocate for wipes, I don’t disagree with what you’re saying. You definitely walk the walk since you used reusable wipes with your kids, so fair enough.

I don’t think it’s “use a wipe” vs “you must have a facial cleansing routine” though. I stand by my assertion that it’s just another way to get women to DO and buy an extra thing to be deemed acceptable looking. Saying you have to cleanse or you’re basically dirty (as one poster implied) is not okay. There’s nothing wrong with just washing your face with water and a flannel. It doesn’t help that skincare routine fanatics are always so preachy and sanctimonious (I have some friends in real life like this too..). “But wipes are SO bad for your skin.” “But I have perfectly nice skin so... how! Fuck off!”

I hope my daughter doesn’t have to grow up with this shit. I’m sure it’ll be onto the next thing by then anyway.

PCohle · 27/04/2019 23:56

It seems really weird to "buy into" wearing make up, but think that well meaning suggestions to clean that make up off your face properly are patriarchal and oppressive.

If you are delighted with your skin, skincare routine and don't enjoy it as a hobby of sorts then you aren't really the intended audience of skincare blogs are you?

I do think not washing your face properly is a bit dirty to be honest though. Like not washing behind your ears innit.

Livingoncake · 28/04/2019 00:31

I don’t really bother with Caroline as I don’t feel I am part of her target audience (i.e. women with loads of disposable income) but I will say she is a hard grafter and seems a lovely person. I don’t know why anyone would say anything nasty about her.

And she’s right about the wipes! I used to think they were fine for a first cleanse until I saw how much makeup came off with micellar water on a cotton pad. Wipes just don’t have that sort of cleansing power.

Alsohuman · 28/04/2019 10:49

Who’d ever have thought that washing your face could be so contentious? Can you not see @Overmoon, that I’m not buying an extra product? I don’t use wipes, I don’t buy wipes - when I had my son back in the dark ages they didn’t exist, we used baby lotion and cotton wool, I also used towelling nappies. So I’m buying cleanser, you’re buying wipes, one product each, except mine isn’t going to landfill.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 28/04/2019 13:43

Presumably your cleanser bottle is going to landfill though, unless it is glass? So what’s the difference? I would imagine (may well be wrong) that wipes break down better than a plastic bottle.

YesQueen · 28/04/2019 14:16

I guess 2 wipes a day is more than a cleanser bottle than might last 6 months though? And a lot of them are suitable for recycling, mine is in a glass jar

SweetestSugar · 28/04/2019 14:20

The need for “double cleansing” is the biggest marketing con in the last ten years.

If your face wash is any good it will remove makeup and clean your skin in one go!

PCohle · 28/04/2019 14:22

Why wouldn't you recycle a plastic cleanser bottle?

Whizzler · 28/04/2019 15:35

The need for “double cleansing” is the biggest marketing con in the last ten years.

That's quite the claim you're making but then this is MN where people are more than a little fond of hyperbole.

Anyway, double cleansing actually saves me money, as well as improving my complexion. Previously I used a Clarins face wash which cost me approx £18 every month. Now I buy a Body Shop oil cleanser and a Garnier cream cleanser which combined costs half that and last several weeks longer.

Look at me, outwitting the evil tentacles of Big Cleanser.

Alsohuman · 28/04/2019 15:45

My cleanser bottle is a recyclable tin, as I pointed out several posts ago. I do wish people would RTFT.

Lottapianos · 28/04/2019 16:46

You can say that again Grin this thread is now even more bonkers than it was when it started!
