Unpopular opinion but AIBU to think that she is talking rubbish? She was on This Morning showing us all how to wash our face and telling us how bad face wipes are. Apparently they just move make up around your face, which is wrong interesting.
Considering it is basically her job to flog skincare, of course she is going to try and tell everyone to ditch them.
Prepared to be told otherwise but maybe she's just been using the wrong wipes 😁

I agree with you Mapril, though I find Nadine Baggot grating in ‘interview’ mode and for a person who sells herself on her science background and more analytical approach, she’s had a fair few charlatans on her YouTube channel (that Des Fernandez fella for one his sun exposure advice was Shock).

misper · 26/04/2019 18:04

Soap or foaming cleansers are way too drying for me, and I have oily skin. Oil cleanser like DHC is brilliant (bit £ I suppose, but lasts ages)

Wallabyone · 26/04/2019 18:13

Thanks all, that's really helpful. I'm not great with my skin, tend to use nip and fab make up remover pads on my eyes and then wash with Nivea foaming stuff. Are the cleansers you use applied on dry skin, so not a 'wash' as such? I read an article by CH yesterday and the sheer amount of stuff, oils, serums, spf, etc that she recommends is baffling! I am so confused by it all.

EntirelyAnonymised · 26/04/2019 18:14

I buy camellia or jojoba oil (which isn’t a true oil) and cleanse with that. Lasts ages, is lovely on my normal/combo skin and cleans everything off with a muslin without that squeaky, astringent feeling.

Lottapianos · 26/04/2019 18:17

Yes Wallaby, straight onto dry skin. You definitely don't have to use everything she recommends! Cleaning your skin properly is the most important thing to get right IMO

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/04/2019 18:18

I never use wipe because they are bad for the environment, not because Caroline said so.

I don't follow her recommendations because there is sooooooo much stuff she seems to like and it's all bloody expensive, I can't keep up.

Alsohuman · 26/04/2019 18:19

My bed time routine:

Body Shop camomile cleansing butter, applied to dry face and removed with warm wet flannel
Rosehip oil or Clarins Blue Orchid oil massaged in
Night cream, currently Marks and Spencer Ultimate

Nothing complicated but it works a treat.

TooManyPaws · 26/04/2019 18:20

I use a bog standard Aldi cleanser with a white cotton flannel. I have a stack of flannels and then they just get dropped in a net bag on the back of the door once they get used. I wash them with the towels with a dollop of laundry bleach. All the washing stuff is echo-friendly due to the septic tank.

I also crochet white cotton rounds to use instead of cotton wool; they get treated as above once used.

AgileLass · 26/04/2019 18:23

Caroline Hirons has stated she has PTSD from the last MN thread about her. Let’s be kind.

I actually think she has glowing skin and looks refreshingly like a woman in her 40s.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/04/2019 18:23

I use cloths I wash after use, but I have been doing this for years, ever since I first bought Eve Lom's Cleansing cream back in the Nineties.

AgileLass · 26/04/2019 18:23

ie not Botoxed within an inch of her life

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/04/2019 18:25

True, she looks refreshingly natural, she's also a natural on TV. I watched her GM bit today, she comes across as someone quite passionate.

ProjectGainsborough · 26/04/2019 18:31

I quite like her. Some of the advice is a bit vehement, but she’s entertaining and the double cleanse, acid tone theory is useful.

Also conscious that she’s an actual human, who might be reading this, so not going to say nasty/personal things (not that I had anything nasty/personal to say anyway!)

ElspethFlashman · 26/04/2019 18:37

She doesn't have bad skin. At all actually. And I say that as someone who is not a fan. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with her skin other than she looks like a middle aged person. Which I certainly don't object to.

She was absolutely slated on here in the past for her spectacular history of non disclosure. And she got very upset as the comments went waaaay beyond that and basically called her a snake oil selling charlatan.

But now she discloses fully and I don't see how anyone can object to her any more than say Nadine Baggott or Sali Hughes. You may not agree with their recommendations, but no one is putting a gun to your head.

EntirelyAnonymised · 26/04/2019 18:37

I agree with you about her skin, Agile. She looks like a woman approaching 50. Her skin looks glowy and smooth to me. I don’t see the problem with it.

She frequently recommends affordable products for the body but she does seem to prefer products at the pricier end of the spectrum for her face though I’m sure she has and still does recommend some affordable products. She does caveat most of her reviews with ‘please don’t buy it if you can’t afford it’. There are plenty of skincare bloggers/YTers who focus on the budget end, so perhaps if you dont like CH because she isn’t reviewing products in your price bracket, look elsewhere.

Some people like the ‘luxury’ aspect, even if they can’t afford to buy the products. Same reason people fantasy shop for £££ houses on Rightmove. If you don’t like it or have no interest, fine move on, but I don’t see why it attracts so much trolling.

hairypaws · 26/04/2019 18:38

I love Caroline. I've only subscribed to her channel for a few months but she has really educated me and sparked my interest in skincare.

The reason I no longer pay much attention to her is just because of the price of her recommendations. £££££.

You have to have a bit of a dig to find anything high Street. The odd time, but only the odd time.

She also recommends high end products from companies she has a long standing relationship with. That's fine - she puts disclaimers in and discloses it.

But it means she's not a good match for me, personally. I prefer more variety, less bias, and more affordable.

Summerfalls · 26/04/2019 18:47

I’m only in my 20’s and I think she has great ‘natural’ looking skin for her age, very fresh and glowy. I think we are far too used to seeing overly cosmetically enhanced now days that you lose sight of what real skin does look like. But maybe that’s just me 🤷🏻‍♀️

EdWinchester · 26/04/2019 18:50

I think her skin is great!

I agree with her advice on wipes - they are only for fannies, flights and festivals.

I don't follow her, but only because I don't like her voice Blush.

EntirelyAnonymised · 26/04/2019 18:50

I think she was the ‘jumping off point’ for many people who are interested in skin care. They may now have developed their knowledge and routines via other avenues but I think CH is the ‘gateway drug’ to skincare for many women. She was for me.

TowerRavenSeven · 26/04/2019 18:56

Stupid question but are flannels the same as a wash cloth or are they made of flannel material? I’ve never seen flannels here before.

EntirelyAnonymised · 26/04/2019 19:00

Yes they are wash cloths. Small squares of towelling fabric.

OrchidInTheSun · 26/04/2019 19:00

I also crochet white cotton rounds to use instead of cotton wool; they get treated as above once used.

This is genius! Thank you. I hate the cotton wool pad thing

TowerRavenSeven · 26/04/2019 19:10

Thank you :)
