Smokers are selfish and clearly not very clever

Today I tried to enjoy the sun but everywhere I went there were smokers puffing away in front of my kids and their own children. It was at the cafe, ice cream store, restaurants, park. Absolutely disgusting. It's hot and my family want to enjoy outside spaces too.

I dont know anyone that smokes. Smokers must have pretty low levels of intelligence if they are willing to slowly kill their bodies even though there is loads of information out there regarding the harms. Why do people smoke still? And do they just not give a damn about smoking in front of children? What goes through their head when they light up in front of a baby in a pram?

YANBU. And smokers ARE stupid to smoke.

NoCauseRebel · 21/04/2019 21:16

I don’t buy into the addiction line. Yes, I do realise that once you are a smoker you become addicted, but I really don’t understand why anyone starts in the first place.

Every smoker I’ve ever known will tell you that the first time they took a drag on a cigarette they absolutely hated it, coughed and spluttered and found it vile and repulsive. And yet fifteen years down the track here they are, addicted and spending upwards of £70 a week on the twenty a day habit.

So why is it, that if you found that first drag awful, you went on to try it again? And again? And again until you were addicted? That’s the bit I don’t understand.

Yes addiction is a powerful thing once it takes hold but you do choose to start down that road in the first place, and in this day and age smoking is generally seen as incredibly unsociable, so there is by no means the kind of peer pressure there was say twenty or thirty years ago.

And how on earth does anyone afford it/. Cigarettes are what? About a tenner a pack these days? What does your family have to forego so you can keep up that habit, because it’s certainly not true to say that only high earners are smokers.

Jaxhog · 21/04/2019 21:16

It isn't about intelligence, it's just that some smokers are CFs. No problem if you want to smoke in your own enclosed space, but smoking next to other people i.e. me is not ok. The problem is that these are the people who, like those with loud voices and misbehaving children, who come out in warm weather and make life miserable for the rest of us.

I also don't understand why people still smoke in 2019. Surely the risks are pretty well known now?

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 21/04/2019 21:16

All 4 people I know who had cancer never smoked btw...

DoneLikeAKipper · 21/04/2019 21:16

Of course... I have a couple of glasses of wine a month, could do with losing a few pounds and exercising more.

That’s not even the beginning of the impact you have on yourself or the world around you. Oh it’s not just you, but the majority of those who whine about ‘stupid smokers not knowing what they do to themselves/the environment’ are usually those who will quite happy scoff a bacon butty not caring about the fat, calories or even the conditions the animal was raised or died in. They will drive their cars without a second thought about that polluting their children’s lungs. They will do twenty loads of washing, then stick it in the tumble dryer, because they have kids and who cares about the carbon footprint when you’re tired and busy. This and a million more examples of how you’re doing a million bits of tiny damage because it’s not as obvious as smoking is you think you’re a better person.

Here’s a newsflash - 99% of the human population are just doing shitty, selfish, harmful things every day. Just remember, OP, you chose to do these harmful things every day of your life and they all build up. You make these stupid choices deliberately, so don’t think you’re above a smoker. In the grand scheme of things you’re just a smug idiot rather than a smokey smelling one.

RedPanda2 · 21/04/2019 21:16

Wow I hope you don't go to Europe anytime soon..

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 21/04/2019 21:17

No you can’t compare having a fag to eating a donut but the health risks of being obese have overtaken the smoking related conditions as being the biggest drain on the NHS.

Do you also slag off larger people sat near you eating something pungent?

There was a woman eating pickled onion monster munch on the train I was on the other day. Should I have called her thick?

ImOnlyHumanAfterall · 21/04/2019 21:17

Urgh vaping is another thing I hate. Keep your stinky sweet smelling chemical fumes away from me.

Oh OP, you sound like such an insufferable whingebag. Im glad I don't have to listen to your preaching in real life.

ExhaustedGrinch · 21/04/2019 21:17

Chill the fuck out. Biscuit

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/04/2019 21:18

What research there is into the effects of secondary cigarette smoke outdoors suggests, unsurprisingly, that the smoke dissipates very rapidly, and that if you're six feet away from the smoker the risk is zero.

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:18

I never said I was clever did I?

Some of you sound so silly. Comparing relatively low risk things that affect nobody to your high risk activity that bothers many people

Maryann1975 · 21/04/2019 21:18

Hmm, I kind of agree with you BUT, smokers are already banned from lighting up inside buildings so they have to go outside. It is not their fault that for 10 days a year, non smokers want to sit in their smoking areas and have clean air. There isn’t anywhere else for them to smoke is there (with them being banned from smoking inside already)? It’s not illegal and as business want their money, They have to be able to smoke somewhere!

shrumps · 21/04/2019 21:19

YABU. I'm a smoker. I know all about the risks, I feel like an utter dick head for doing it. You are right, we must be absolutely mental for doing it. It's shit, ridiculously expensive, there are literally no benefits. I wish I'd never started.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/04/2019 21:19

And if it's more the annoyance that bothers you, there's some saying about pots and kettles Grin

shrumps · 21/04/2019 21:19

YANBU! I meant to say!

holly873 · 21/04/2019 21:19

You may yourself sound ridiculous once you then took aim at Vapers, sorry.

Duster12 · 21/04/2019 21:19

I quit smoking a while ago but lol at your day being ruined 🤭

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:20

4 people that had cancer never smoked... wow.... that's a wonderful study that clearly proves smoking doesn't cause cancer. Thank you to the poster above for that

Zoflorabore · 21/04/2019 21:20

Smokers are not of low intelligence. I know several very professional people who smoke, including my doctor!

I smoke and I have no willpower. It is a horrible addiction and I know it harms me. If only it was that easy to stop.

I'm intelligent and that's not just my opinion.
I got an academic scholarship to a private school in a city where they are rare. I did very well academically and am well read.
I'm not going to win any Nobel prizes soon but I can hold my own.

So by your theory op- are all non-smokers intelligent as that's pretty much what you're saying? Don't think so somehow.

happyhillock · 21/04/2019 21:21

Your just a bloody idiot, yes i smoke i'm a lab technician so i'm not of low intelligance, i drink decaf, never drink wine, hate cakes of any kind, the number of kids suffering from asthma has trippeled since the 1970's due to the crap that comes from all types of vehicles, smoker's are allowed to smoke in most places outside, i'd never smoke in a children's play park, you don't get to tell me i can't smoke outside, when vehicles are doing much more damage, you sound rude and below intelligence, maybe you should look up what causes more damage outside, you'd be surprised.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 21/04/2019 21:21

PreseaCombatir · 21/04/2019 21:22

I think getting into a car is one of the most risky things you can do these days.

Tinkoschminko · 21/04/2019 21:22

Addictions are quite common in highly intelligent people. They’re often used as a crutch to stem a disquiet mind. Intelligence isn’t related to objectively rational thinking and most smokers could tell you that they love it and that they’d never start if they had the chance again in the same breath - it’s that cognitive dissonance that makes it so difficult to stop.

0lapislazuli · 21/04/2019 21:22

@Asta19 maybe you should look into statistics. You have a 50% chance to die prematurely from a smoking-related illness. A quick google seems to show that the chances of dying in a car accident is 0.4%. So how exactly does that compare? Yes, life is full of risk, but flipping a coin to see whether something will kill you is not rational.
