Smokers are selfish and clearly not very clever

forever390 · 21/04/2019 20:41

Today I tried to enjoy the sun but everywhere I went there were smokers puffing away in front of my kids and their own children. It was at the cafe, ice cream store, restaurants, park. Absolutely disgusting. It's hot and my family want to enjoy outside spaces too.

I dont know anyone that smokes. Smokers must have pretty low levels of intelligence if they are willing to slowly kill their bodies even though there is loads of information out there regarding the harms. Why do people smoke still? And do they just not give a damn about smoking in front of children? What goes through their head when they light up in front of a baby in a pram?

Biancadelrioisback · 21/04/2019 20:53

OP do you not do anything with any health risk?
Yes I agree I don't want people smoking around my DS. But my DH smokes. He isn't an arsehole with it and tries to be very considerate. But he is addicted. And if you knew how hard it was to quit, you wouldn't be so flippant about it.

OddBoots · 21/04/2019 20:53

There are drug addicts of all kinds with the whole range of intelligence levels and once addicted then the addiction pull can be stronger than worrying about being selfish and the effect on others.

Biancadelrioisback · 21/04/2019 20:54

@babdoc I presume you're banning cars and buses too then?

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 21/04/2019 20:54

Christ I hope you’re absolutely perfect in every single way eh?!

I’m a smoker and even if I am of very low intelligence at least I’m a damn sight nicer than you.

forever390 · 21/04/2019 20:55

Maybe I am being unreasonable re intelligence but smoking is just so dangerous, not just to the smoker but to everyone who is forced to inhale it. It is a fact.

Sure sugar isn't great but in moderation, you will be fine. The same cannot be said about smoking.

Everyone I saw today seemed completely oblivious to the kids around them inhaling the smoke. Don't they read the news?

OP posts:
DoneLikeAKipper · 21/04/2019 20:55

Please tell us about your perfect life @forever390, where you do not do anything that harms your body or the environment around you. Since you have children, I’ve already marked you down as a fail on the environmental and the physical health factor, so you have some ground to make up already. I assume you don’t eat or drink anything that’s considered bad for you, for instance you had a glass of water in that cafe, not caffeine like a stupid person, or anything greasy/sugary to eat either.

Bluelonerose · 21/04/2019 20:56

Op I get your pissed off I'm a smoker (desperately want to quit) but your not going to get us onside with your attitude.
Fwiw I agree outside seating areas should either be all none smoking or split into smoking and none smoking.
I smoke away from my dc and try to smoke away from others dc but I'm just one person so not sure what good it'll do.

Biscuit
FurryDogMother · 21/04/2019 20:57

Fucking hell, OP, I feel the same - I chose not to have children because of the planet etc., and yet everywhere I go there are people flaunting their kids at me. It's almost like they're showing off their ability to reproduce, and their disdain for the environmental impact of it all. Bastards, eh? I really don't understand why their lifestyle choices are different from mine, so I'm putting it down to lack of intelligence.

Brilliantidiot · 21/04/2019 20:57

Well this thread wasn't designed to cause a row at all was it? 🙄

How about ex smokers OP? Does IQ level increase as nicotine level decreases?
Those that smoke on and off? Does their intelligence level fluctuate accordingly?

Babdoc · 21/04/2019 20:58

Bianca, I’d like to ban diesel vehicles, yes, for the toxic micro particle emissions. The car industry is actively working towards hybrid or electric vehicles to reduce pollution.
Transport is essential- bloody cigarettes are absolutely not!

ImOnlyHumanAfterall · 21/04/2019 20:58

So are junkies, gamblers, alcoholics etc etc

But that's addiction. Despite knowing full well the negative impact of what you're doing, the addiction controls you.

You need to stop being such a judgmental arse and learn more about addiction and why it affects so many people.

Addiction is more often than not a form of self medication for something deeper.

My DM could never stop smoking or drinking heavily, despite me hating her doing it, as it helps control her deep-rooted depression and anxiety following a childhood of abuse.

And some smokers were just born into a generation that didn't know the effects if nicotine back then, but now it's just too late.

But our newer generations are far more educated and it's slowly but surely disappearing.

Its not nice being a passive smoker, I agree, but your post is rather ignorant and nasty.

MQv2 · 21/04/2019 20:58

"enjoying a coffee at a cafe"

Willingly putting caffeine in your body and supporting the coffee trade 🤦🤦🤦

So not only stupid enough to poison yourself but self centered enough to think your coffee justifies the negative impact of the coffee trade

Greeborising · 21/04/2019 20:59

Bloody hell!
I agree that smelling other people’s fag smoke is unpleasant and I would suggest that the majority of smokers are aware that it has become increasingly antisocial and therefore make the effort to avoid bothering others.
As with everything, there are always a few individuals who don’t really think/care about the impact of their actions on others
eg loud music, dropping litter, leaving their car idling, owning untrained pets, not picking up dog shit, driving carelessly, using their phone while driving etc etc etc I could go on but you get my point.
For you, OP, to state that
“Smokers must have a pretty low level of intelligence”
Is downright bloody offensive

Jon65 · 21/04/2019 20:59

The point is that if Op eats doughnuts in a public space until the cows come home, that affects no one but her. If she were to sit puffing away, that does effect people. It makes their clothes stink, their hair stink and breathing in secondary smoke is know to be derogatory to your health. If someone came and farted in your face wouldn't that piss you off? Well people smoking so smoke blows over me, pisses me off a lot.

PJLove80 · 21/04/2019 21:00

Honestly having been addicted to both alcohol and cigarettes, alcohol was a doddle to give up in comparison. Haven’t had a fag in two years but I still love the smell of fresh smoke 😀 that said I keep my children well away from anyone smoking obvs but I don’t find it difficult to do, don’t actually see that many people smoking anymore.

standardaccount · 21/04/2019 21:01

Oh shut up. This post makes you come across as very low intelligence as well as ignorant and down right nasty. Yuck.

joaninthesun · 21/04/2019 21:01

Don’t fall off your pedestal OP

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:01

Of course... I have a couple of glasses of wine a month, could do with losing a few pounds and exercising more.

I believe there are health risk levels:

Drugs like heroin are right up there as high risk. Hence why they are illegal

Smoking is not far behind. Breathing in carcinogenic smoke and tar, letting it settle in your lungs and forcing it upon others who walk near you. Making you age early and get skanky yellow nails and lines round your mouth. And paying lots of money for it!!!!

Becoming very overweight on sugar and fat. Increases heart rate and diabetes risk. Not good either obviously.

Moderate drinking and enjoying sugar as part of a healthy diet are fairly low risk in comparison.

Sodding hell miss perfect from school is on Mn

PreseaCombatir · 21/04/2019 21:03

You sound like someone who sees someone smoking at a park bench, goes and sits next to them and loudly starts coughing

hidinginthenightgarden · 21/04/2019 21:03

As someone who's child has suffered with breathing problems due to a sellfish arse smoking during pregnancy (not me!), I agree that it is dispicable and selfish to smoke around others, especially children.
I really don't see how it starts these days but can understand why those that have been smoking 20+ years would struggle to give up.

StealthPolarBear · 21/04/2019 21:04

Most smokers are considerate I assume. You just dont notice them in the same way

NCforthis2019 · 21/04/2019 21:05

You sound quite like a fool, maybe let people do what they want, even if it means it’ll kill them - nothing to do with you.

iVampire · 21/04/2019 21:05

The outdoors part of a cafe is the smoking area.

Now, some places can afford not to have a smoking area, so perhaps those are the businesses you should frequent. Or sit in the non-smoking area.

There’s often threads like this when there’s s sunny day. But businesses have to cater for the whole year, and if they lose smokers in a few sunny days, will those non-smokers me there occupying the erstwhile smoking area when it’s not a sunny holiday weekend?
