Smokers are selfish and clearly not very clever

Today I tried to enjoy the sun but everywhere I went there were smokers puffing away in front of my kids and their own children. It was at the cafe, ice cream store, restaurants, park. Absolutely disgusting. It's hot and my family want to enjoy outside spaces too.

I dont know anyone that smokes. Smokers must have pretty low levels of intelligence if they are willing to slowly kill their bodies even though there is loads of information out there regarding the harms. Why do people smoke still? And do they just not give a damn about smoking in front of children? What goes through their head when they light up in front of a baby in a pram?

Preaching is an ugly trait.

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:07

I never sat next to smokers... they sat near me and my children and lit fags.

Yes it's outside but let me tell you, I'm still bloody breathing it in, it's still making my baby stink.

I'd like to see a law that stops smoking in outside public spaces completely. If you really can't give up you will have to stay at home or risk a very big fine. What you do in your house is up to you.

As a smoker, and an intelligent one at that! I can enlighten you. Smoking is not “guaranteed” to kill you. It is a risk, like many other risks. Many people die in car crashes, does that mean you would never place you or your children in a car? Do you stay away from alcohol in case you become an alcoholic? The long term effects of vaping are as yet unknown but it hasn’t stopped people doing it. Life is full of risk. I watched a documentary years ago about people who die getting up in the morning, electrocuted by alarm clocks (in the days when plug in ones were the norm) tripping down stairs over their slippers and breaking their necks! It was very interesting. In the past year I’ve lost two friends, one to a heart attack and one to cancer, neither smoked. So, while knowing the risks, it’s a risk I choose to take because I enjoy smoking. I personally wouldn’t light up in the vicinity of a child. But don’t presume we are all inconsiderate idiots.

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 21/04/2019 21:09

Someone sat next to you isnt making your baby stink.

If your baby sinks of smoke, someone is smoking in an enclosed area with your baby.

SpeckledDot · 21/04/2019 21:09

I don't think smokers have a low IQ, i think they just don't think about the consequences of smoking while they are having a cigarette. It's difficult to imagine dying of lung cancer when your life has been relatively trauma free. Also maybe it has something to do with gratification? Like if someone is more of an instant-gratification person they will be more likely to smoke, whereas if someone is a delayed-gratification person they will be thinking too much about the future consequences of smoking to light up.

I used to smoke but i didn't really care about my health at the time. I stopped when i was pregnant and now I'm health conscious and thinking of a future with my child.

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:09

Urgh vaping is another thing I hate. Keep your stinky sweet smelling chemical fumes away from me.

MyMumDimensionJumps · 21/04/2019 21:10

I got a 1st class degree and I smoked at the time. Must be a genius now that I've quit! Mensa here I come.....

Why don't you just ask them not to light up around your kids? Yes, you shouldn't have to and people should be more considerate, but no point saying nothing and then having a rant on here. Some people have no idea about it being socially unacceptable to smoke around kids, so it just need it pointing out to them.

At least it was the stench of cat piss smelling cannabis, which happens at my local beach.

Illy603 · 21/04/2019 21:10

How unreasonable you are.
Do you understand how an addiction works?! Unfortunately for many (or probably all) smokers, they never lit up that first cigarette thinking that would be them hooked. To say all smokers are of low intelligence speaks volumes to your own.

Absolute ignorance. I suppose you are absolutely perfect in every possible way?!

AuntieStella · 21/04/2019 21:11

I want to channel Sir Humphrey -

  • all those selfless smokers, paying higher taxes and voluntarily shortening their lives to forgo their pensions.

They have to smoke outdoors - and that means the outdoors seats are the smoking area.

Don't worry, OP, the sunny spells are quite brief and you won't want to be encroaching into the outdoor regulars space for long.

holly873 · 21/04/2019 21:11

I'm offended, get me out of here. You're probably the sort of person no win no fee solicitors make a career out of.

senbei · 21/04/2019 21:11

I abhor smoking but "low intelligence" is such a weak argument to any topic imaginable. Start off with a different opener next time and you'll find a more productive discussion.

serii · 21/04/2019 21:11

Ex-smoker here.

Smoking is pleasurable. It's really, really enjoyable.

So for me everyone wondering why people do it, that's why.

Samind · 21/04/2019 21:12

Well what about people using spray deodorant, cleaning chemicals, non reusable items, car emissions, general air pollution...

List is endless OP.

I don't think I should have to pay a fine or sit in the house because of a personal choice. I'm a considerate smoker too.

HavelockVetinari · 21/04/2019 21:12

People who light up around kids are bellends. So unless you were in a pub garden, the smokers were being dicks to sit near you and light up.

However, it's not acceptable to say that all smokers lack intelligence. I'm an Oxbridge grad, plenty of folk at uni smoked. For some people it's incredibly tough to quit, and I thank God I've never struggled like that.

serii · 21/04/2019 21:13

Oh and you're breathing chemicals right now..

forever390 · 21/04/2019 21:13

Those people that are talking risk... it's not a valid excuse. Travelling in a broken plane, with one engine and flown by a two year old DOES NOT have the same risk as driving a car. They really can't be compared.

The cancer risk from smoking a fag vs. Eating a doughnut just isn't comparable

OP posts:
Greeborising · 21/04/2019 21:14

Op ffs!
There are obviously some people out there who couldn’t give a flying fart whether what they are doing is offensive to others
That’s life
And yes, smoking is not pleasant and I agree I would not be happy about someone blowing smoke over my kids
But
Do you realise how offensive you are being?
You admit to a couple of glasses of wine a month (light weight)
Could do with losing a few pounds (couldn’t we all)
Need to exercise more (meh)
It’s like your argument is ‘I’m not perfect by any means but these evil smokers are clearly thick”

FatEasterBunny · 21/04/2019 21:14

I gave up smoking years ago but I could just do with a fag right now. Grin

PortiaCastis · 21/04/2019 21:14

I don't like the stench of booze but I don't call those who drink it of lower intelligence

Shoxfordian · 21/04/2019 21:14

Yeah you're really unreasonable op and you don't sound very intelligent from your comments. The world doesn't revolve around you and your children.

MyMumDimensionJumps · 21/04/2019 21:14

I meant wasn't, not was. Bloody phone!

1990shopefulftm · 21/04/2019 21:14

Smoking killed my dad and it took that happening for my mum to quit, she has a 1st degree in maths so she's certainly intelligent but it was an addiction like any other. Like it took me a lot of willpower to give up caffeine which i didn't successfully do until it was contributing to tachycardia and dizziness i was having at the time and damaging my health (after using it for 6 years to self medicate my learning difficulties).
Although after 14 years of dad being dead it still pains me whenever i see anyone smoking in public, i would only ever explain things politely from my point of view and encourage them to seek support, insulting a group of people isn't ever going to really get anywhere.

Cornishclio · 21/04/2019 21:15

I think it is a filthy habit and yes would rather avoid smokers at cafes etc especially on a nice day when I would like to sit outside and breathe in fresh air and not the smoke of an inconsiderate smoker. However I would hope most of them know the damage they are doing to themselves and are considerate of others and would not presume it is necessarily linked to their intelligence. Addiction to smoking, alcohol, drugs and sugar/junk food are usually linked to mental state and not that easy to kick the bad habit. I know people who have smoked in the past and now bitterly regret it as they have health issues directly linked to smoking. It is a risk and some get away with no repercussions and others not so lucky. As long as they keep the smoke away from me that is fine. Goodness only knows how anyone affords cigarettes these days though.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 21/04/2019 21:15

As a smoker I would never sit down on a table next to kids and light up. That's rude!

The rest of your post... 🤷‍♀️

OwnerOfThatChocolateBar · 21/04/2019 21:16

Op do you have the occasional drink? Do you use a mobile?...I could go on. Get my point? You sound about as intelligent as a chocolate egg
