Inspired by a few threads recently about money. Specifically money in London. I’m shocked at how many people seem to think you need to be rich to live in London (£100k per year is rich to me) and how many people think £100k is not a lot in London.
Why is this specific to London?Other than house prices?
Just to put it into perspective, I’m a single parent with 2 children living in zone 1 London. I take home £22000.
Admittedly, cheap rent at £650pcm. But we manage. Obviously we’re not well off, can’t afford fancy holidays, buying clothes for summer at the moment is a struggle, have no savings, can’t afford to decorate. But we have what we need, the occasional treat, short break
Most people I know locally are in similar positions. But I suppose people have a tendency to mix with their own kind.
I just find this ‘other london’ bizarre. The London where you need 100k to barely get by Confused

£60k after tax is a lot of money.
I moved out of London because I think living in London in lower wages without social housing in a decent place, is shit. I still have friends living in London. I know plenty of families in private rented or bought accommodation that is far too small for their family. They would all love the three bed semi quoted for the imaginary family on 100k.
And outside of London in many places wages are much lower.
I do think most people mix with people of similar income and this leads to a total lack of understanding of how others live.

@RubberTreePlant she'd be craycray to leave her home. Maybe if all relatives and friends move away, consider it then, but I think she has it good right now

RubberTreePlant · 22/04/2019 13:40

Crazy because of the family support or crazy because of the cheap rent @Nickpan ? Or crazy because she's in centralism London?

The family support is valuable, I agree.

Nickpan · 22/04/2019 15:44

crazy cheap rent, I can only imagine. Does she want to move then?

Nickpan · 22/04/2019 15:45

yes, just read her last post

RubberTreePlant · 22/04/2019 15:52

Well there's some kind of swap system, which she's been advertising on. So she was obviously thinking about it. She'd get cheap rent at the new place too if she swapped.

I get that she doesn't want to go far because of family support. But swapping isn't "crazy" because it wouldn't lose her her cheap rent.

Imustbemad00 · 22/04/2019 17:04

Yes I’d like to swap but would be similar or cheap rent and only with another person with a secure tenancy.

Also, it’s not as unusual as people think, regarding my rent. Almost everyone I know is in similar and a quick google search tells me there’s around 1 million social or council properties in London, which will all have similar rent. There’s council blocks everywhere.
