What do you call the thing you use to change TV channels?

I've just watched Tenable and the thing I thought it was called didn't make the top ten of names.

I'm honestly, genuinely shocked. I thought it was really common and would be the most obvious answer.

We said ” doofer” when I was growing up, although my Mum uses that word for loads of things. Now I say “ remote”.

Now it's usually just the remote, or the "Mote muntrole", as that's what DS used to call it when he was little.

Is it a regional thing?

I usually call it a remote (North West)

My Dad (from Belfast) calls it a doofer usually but sometimes a zapper!

I saw Tenable and I thought it was such an unfair question! We all think our childhood words are common, unless you've said them in front of other people and got blank faces Blush - it's not like most people watch tv with lots of other people in normal life to find out!
