What do you call the thing you use to change TV channels?

I've just watched Tenable and the thing I thought it was called didn't make the top ten of names.

I'm honestly, genuinely shocked. I thought it was really common and would be the most obvious answer.

It's a 'doobri-firkin' here, but I've never heard anyone but my family call it that. Or the 'doobri' for short.

The buttons. The virgin media remote is called the '8 buttons' because it is a bit of an hourglass shape with a waist!

Heard of someone who was shocked to find out it was called a remote. They'd thought all their lives it was called 'the mote'.

Never heard anyone call it a pinger, but I've never heard anyone call it a doofer or Flicker either - those all sound like made up words which people might use in private but which could mean almost anything - not much different to just calling everything "the thing".

It's called the Jimmy Jones in our house because that's what my lovely Geordie housemate called it when I was a student. No idea why he called it that.

Failing that it's the controller. But I do definitely remember "doofer". Never heard of pinger OP.
