To ask what's your 'go too' takeaway from the chipper?

SrSteveOskowski · 13/04/2019 14:06

Following on from the thread where the poster asked if she should get a takeaway from the chipper in a Friday, what's your usual go too takeaway?

Either battered sausage or a quarter pounder with cheese for me, sometimes with a portion of onion rings, except for Supermacs (Irish chipper) when it'll always be a chicken fillet sandwich.

ALWAYS a garlic and cheese chip, regardless of what chipper I go to. I think that might be just an Irish thing though? Not quite sure.

It depends where we go. If we go to closest we get a chip butty and small sausage with curry or if we go further away we get chips and curry sauce.

We call it a chippy here in NE

Sagradafamiliar · 13/04/2019 19:15

I used to love a chippy tea until I found out that most are still frying in lard/dripping 😭😭😭 (vegetarian)

BillywigSting · 13/04/2019 19:16

Irish in Liverpool here, I've always called it the chipper but it's chippy here.

Cheese and garlic chips are divine, the best ones are from the old chipper on main Street in Gorey.

In Liverpool, pie dinner with mushy peas and gravy. It's pure stodge but it hits the spot like.

Tartyflette · 13/04/2019 19:17

Battered skate, chips, mushy peas and the chippy's own home-made tartare sauce.
DH has same but with haddock not skate.
Local chippy in our village is excellent, run by Turks who also do the full kebab range. But the fish is gorgeous.

LittleAndOften · 13/04/2019 19:20

Battered cod and chips with tons of vinegar. Burgers are from burger places, chicken from chicken places, Chinese or indian.... you get the idea Grin. Chip shops don't do good burgers or chicken imo.

Really want a chip butty now...

eurochick · 13/04/2019 19:22

It's chippy or chip shop here.

I always get cod and chips. We sometimes share a side order of scampi. Salt on in the shop and vinegar at home so the chips don't go soggy. We only do it about once every six months though!

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 13/04/2019 19:24

Pizza crunch supper, gravy, salt and vinegar.

doctorboo · 13/04/2019 19:40

@SrSteveOskowski A wally is a gherkin. I bloody love a gherkin.

If I go to the chipper by myself I grab a battered sausage, small chips, wally and pickles onion and mushy peas. Then I pop next door a grab a half loaf of fresh baked white bread so I can make a butty when I get home.

SrSteveOskowski · 13/04/2019 19:48

Ah. Thanks @doctorboo. I honestly had no idea.

cheesey chips and battered onion rings yummy

jigsawmaniac · 13/04/2019 21:12

Chippy here. I'd have a hamburger supper (battered burger). Am I right in thinking what some of you call a scallop is what I would call a fritter? And what are scraps? Sounds like bits of batter? West of Scotland here.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/04/2019 21:18

A fish lot (which in Sunderland is fish and chips) always with scraps.
Or cheesy chips.
I’ve never had a saveloy dip which is the local speciality. Confused

Greensleeves · 13/04/2019 21:25

If I'm in Stoke, delicious steak and kidney pudding, chips, peas and gravy.

If I'm in Devon, god who cares. It's all awful. Sometimes the fish is OK.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 13/04/2019 21:25

Ooh a snack box, with a portion of curry sauce for the chips and burger sauce for the chicken! Or a chicken breast sandwich meal with taco fries. We love Supermacs!

Overtheborder · 13/04/2019 21:41

My chippy order is usually a cheese burger with fried onions and tomato relish and I steal a few of the kids chips.

Or if I'm not that hungry then I'll just order a small chip and buy a cheap white loaf and have chip butties (with real butter) and a glass of Club orange.

Ds always gets a goujon supper with a tub of gravy, Dd gets a sausage supper with gravy, dh gets either a fish supper (depending on the chippy) or a supper grill (which is a chicken breast, sausage, bacon, a pineapple and a banana fritter, gravy, onion and peas all served over chips.

If you're ever in NI and near Ballycastle then you have to try Morton's for their fish- it's a bit pricey but the only place we'll get fish out of on the North Coast.

MulticolourMophead · 13/04/2019 21:47

It’s a chippy or "the chip shop" here. (East Mids)

I generally have haddock, chips and mushy peas. DCs tend to have battered sausages and chips.

But I want to know wft is a "mock chop"?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/04/2019 21:55

Got to be battered sausage, chips and curry sauce or gravy, depending on my mood (but not both) for me, when patronising Neptune's Pantry.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/04/2019 21:57

Why is it often known as a chippy but never a fishy?

You never refer to M&S as 'Spencer's' for short, do you?

MaryShelley1818 · 13/04/2019 21:57

We had a chippy tea tonight!
I had large cod and chips with batter (scraps) and a thick slice of bread and butter.
DS had fish fingers and chips (ate about half but he’s only one - this was an extremely rare treat for him!)
DH had fish cake and chips
DMIL had mince pie and chips
DFIL had a large cowboy which is a battered sausage, battered burger, chips and curry sauce.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/04/2019 21:59

If you really love chips and you're ever in Glasgow, be sure to ask for 'a chip supper'.

Bunnylady53 · 13/04/2019 22:03

The menu at our local chippy gets bigger & bigger but I nearly always have cod & chips then put my own stuff on at home ( low salt, vinegar, Hellman’s mayo & Heinz tomato ketchup). Some years ago I used to love pie & chips. I quite like battered sausages too. Oh & cheesy chips. The best I’ve ever had were from a local pub & the portion was immense! My friend & I said we would share next time.

namechangechanger · 13/04/2019 22:08

@missmouse101 was there really a need to correct someone's spelling on a casual thread on Mumsnet about what you have from the chippy? ConfusedConfused

flipflop67 · 13/04/2019 22:11

Spice bag anyone?!

Chiliprepper · 13/04/2019 22:12

Live in Edinburgh where it’s a chippy - fish supper with salt and vinegar (not chippy sauce which i think is an Edinburgh thing?) When I’m at home (Ireland) it’s a battered chicken fillet burger with garlic mayo, chicken burgers here are rank in my experience

Idontmeanto · 13/04/2019 22:13

Cod, chips, gerkhin and tartare sauce. Unless I’m feeling nostalgic for my student days/in Scotland where sausage supper or chips/fried rice/curry sauce is called for.
