Which would you prefer? Are you a dog or cat person?

I can't choose. We have both and whilst the dogs adore me, I adore the cats. I think if it was based on our pets on a desert island our cats would survive because they're evil and constantly killing everything they can get their devil paws into, whilst the dogs are fat and lazy and a bit stupid.

DH would choose dogs because he adores ours.

Cats can be just as loving as dogs. Mine always comes running to the door when we come home, and she cries if we leave her for too long. She's very affectionate and loves a lap.

Cats are definitely smarter too.

I’m somewhat conflicted on this one. After years as a confirmed ‘cat person’ (but still big dog admirer) I got a dog. It wasn’t a ‘normal’ dog though, it was a whippet. Just like a cat he doesn’t smell, sleeps wherever he wants, cleans himself and mostly ignores my commands.

So, maybe cats can survive with some dog breeds allowed to be honorary cats if they live up to the felines’ high standards.

MaidenMotherCrone · 05/04/2019 09:51

Cats. I have dogs and cats. Dogs are minions and cats are leaders.

Mine are not friends. She often sits on him to put him in his place.

If there were some transcendental being, a universal law, a mighty entity which is impossible to comprehend but only possible to worship - would you ever ask if it survives? ;) Cats, of course. They rule now and they will inherit the earth. Amen.

Early man saw Dog, thought 'He looks useful' and started to domesticate him.

Cat saw early man, thought 'He looks useful' and started to domesticate him.

Cats every time. They're the ones who have been training us for years, but would be just as fine without us, just peeved that life wasn't as comfortable as before.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 05/04/2019 10:06

Dogs without a doubt. Service dogs, police dogs, detection dogs, therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs .. or a cat.

EngagedAgain · 05/04/2019 10:07

Mostly I've always been more drawn to cats, but I've got fussier about things, like them jumping on work tops and sleeping on the bed. I maybe deluded, but I have the idea that I can train a dog not to go in the bedroom, or get on the sofa (don't mind cats on sofa, just not the bed)

JenniferJareau · 05/04/2019 10:07

Has to be cats!

thenightsky · 05/04/2019 10:10

Dogs obviously. Sniffer dogs, hearing dogs, guide dogs, police dogs, gun dogs, guard dogs etc.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 05/04/2019 10:14

Dogs!

CabbageHippy · 05/04/2019 10:14

Cats - they are far wiser & can survive completely happily on their own.

EntirelyAnonymised · 05/04/2019 10:17

I like both but if it was a Battle Royale, cats would win. They are more cunning and more independent. They are more equipped for survival than their canine compadres.

BloodyDisgrace · 05/04/2019 10:23

She will end us all one day, so I am doing a huge daily favour to all humankind by making sure everything is to her satisfaction.

She is definitely plotting something evil, bloody Shock. Cracking RBF.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/04/2019 10:29

Dogs every time.
I've had cats and have loved them, but I've yet to hear of Guide Cats, Disability-Aid Cats, Police Cats, Sniffer Cats, Hearing Cats for the deaf, Sheep Cats, etc.

Apart from companionship, which granted is no small thing for many people, they're generally pretty useless.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 05/04/2019 11:18

Wash your mouth out, GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER - that's an awful thing to say!

As has already been said, cats could do all these jobs, and many more, but they don't need to. They have dogs to do them instead. And anyway, cats are too busy plotting.

Idonotlikeyoudonaldtrump · 05/04/2019 11:25

DOGS.
I don’t want to contemplate a world without dogs.

BloodyDisgrace · 05/04/2019 11:51

EntirelyAnonymised - thank you. Yes, that's our soul-eating, forever infernal, ever so cheerful bosspuss. What is RBF please?

BloodyDisgrace · 05/04/2019 11:57

TimeIhadaNameChange I like the phrase 'cats could do all these jobs", yess!! There's a post-apocalyptic fiction novel called Bete, where animal rights were equalled to those of humans and a main character was asking sarcastically "what job can a dog do that a human cannot?" and the dog barked : "A dog can do ANY JOB!" Something like that. Jokes aside, they do jobs actually, both cats and dogs. I read about a woman with some medical condition who'd faint, or have a fit unexpectedly, but her cat would sense it beforehand and sit on her feet and alert her, so she can avoid injuries falling.

drspouse · 05/04/2019 12:00

I am a cat person, but the cats would take over anyway if it was a contest. Cats are in charge.

MaMaMaMySharona · 05/04/2019 12:00

There is no competition! Dogs win by miles and miles

MaMaMaMySharona · 05/04/2019 12:01

Photo evidence!

Both are a pain in their own ways but cats probably less so.
