To decide to stop tipping

I'm a middle aged nursery nurse earning minimum wage. It seems daft to leave a tip for a waiter who will be earning at least as much as me. Likewise my hairdresser.

DH thinks I'm being cheap. Anyone else dared to stop tipping?

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow
dd is working at a chain bar/restaurant and customers can add service charge on the card machine. The restaurant keeps 3% of that. Is that right? Or acceptable?

I don't know how true this is, bear in mind that I was told this when querying the same policy for a past
similar employer, so it could be complete rubbish. But they said that legally as the tip is on card, and therefore paid to the company, the money is theirs to do with what they want. So they can use it to bump up a lower wage than nmw as long as on average you get nmw, and they can divide it between whoever they like, however they like. Cash tips are given to the server, so belong to them, most places have an unofficial policy of put in a pot and share with those who would never get a tip but are just as involved such as cleaners, kitchen porters etc.
Is it right? No
Is it acceptable? No
Is it legal? Sadly I think it is.
The company I work for allows us to put the whole amount, plus tip through the machine, and then through the till, giving cash change, which then goes in the tip jar. Other places didn't allow it.

This clarifies a few things and yet still manages to muddy the waters! They've changed the paying less the nmw and bumping up with tips but yes, it's correct that companies can legally keep all or a % of card tips - and a lot do.

People not tipping doesn't bother me, but that pisses me right off. 😠

Itsyersel · 05/04/2019 08:55

Do you tip the server in McDonald's, KFC, BK, COSTA, ETC, No most people don't and a lot will even bring it over to your table now, so what is the difference,
I used to hate tipping now I do not tip at all they are paid to do a job as am I, why should certain jobs dictate if they are due a tip.

In summary some people will agree with you, others will think you are skint and/or mean and some people will refuse to eat out with you.

RevokeRemainohsodit · 05/04/2019 13:00

No one will refuse to eat out with me as I will go along with what the majority want to do with regards tipping. DH can carry on tipping but he's on a six figure salary so can play Lord of the Manor if he so chooses.

I’m not used to tipping and I don’t want it to become the norm-it basically just encourages employers to underpay leaving their staff to hope they can makeup the shortfall through tips. I would rather pay more for my food knowing that all the staff are paid the same market rate.

PCohle · 05/04/2019 17:27

It sounds like the issue is more about how you and your DH share finances than about tipping OP...

Snog · 06/04/2019 12:23

If your household income is well over £100k it seems even more mean not to tip Shock

WelcomeToShootingStars · 06/04/2019 15:14

I don't tip because I think people earn less than I do. I tip people who provide me with a personal service, or people who go out of their way for me.

Rowgtfc72 · 06/04/2019 16:58

I don't tip my hairdresser. My haircut is only £12 but I'm on minimum wage so have to work an hour and a half to pay for this.

SneakyGremlins · 06/04/2019 17:16

Actually, I do tip for haircut - it's £5/£7 depending so I usually round it to either £7/£10

TeacupDrama · 06/04/2019 21:44

but @sneaky that's a huge percentage giving £7 for a £5 haircut is a 40% tip and £10 for a £7 cut is 42% in UK 10 % is concerned generous for tips so it would be 50p or 70p extra

I do tip at table service restaurants but I don't tip at McDonalds, Costa Subway or similar often at chains you don't know who to tip because 1 person takes drinks order someone else does the food it is then served by person 3
I don't tip taxi drivers or hairdressers and to be honest I would rather tipping didn't exist I would rather a restaurant charged £12 instead of £10 and explicitly said no tips

SneakyGremlins · 06/04/2019 21:51

@TeacupDrama true, but if I give £7 I'm actually giving what I SHOULD be paying - it's just the barber is too kind and undercharges.

I don't know what the rates are like with Women's hairdressers, I was just giving an example of what most guys in the local barber tip Smile
