Where is this £60?

My just turned 8 year old DS got a little blue wallet a few months ago from a museum giftshop. I gave him a £5 note to put into it as he'd never had any 'paper money'. He then got around £25 in money at Christmas and at his birthday 1 week ago got a further £30. After the last sum I was aware that it was mounting up and made a mental note to take it and put it in his bank account. Today it is missing.

To recap, he had the wallet with his saved £60 in it a week ago. He swears blind it was on his drawers in his bedroom. I haven't seen it elsewhere in the house despite the fact I've been doing lots of tidying in preparation for some decorating. I have just turned his bedroom upside down looking... Looked in every drawer, cupboard, behind drawers, even inside all pockets, under the rug, under his mattress, everywhere.

In the last 3 hours I have searched the entire house, even down the sides of sofas and under furniture.

The only other people who came are 2 cleaners who were here on Wednesday. I don't want to point the finger but if it was in his room and now isn't, would it be unreasonable for me to at least contact the cleaning company and ask if they'd seen it? Or do I have to chalk it up to experience and write it off?

If I were you I would have to test this for my own peace of mind... horrible to think it might be the cleaners but at least you will know.

Mememeplease · 02/04/2019 18:46

I'd definitely leave "bait" but tbh the cleaners would have to be pretty stupid to take it so hot on the heels of the wallet.

fashiondevotee · 02/04/2019 19:16

My vote is for the coins in the money box as bait idea. Report back once they've been, OP!

HollowTalk · 02/04/2019 22:26

The thing is that even if they don't take anything else for months, you won't be able to trust them. If you have valuable jewellery and it disappears, you won't get that back. I think I would speak to them tomorrow and fire them.

OrigamiZoo · 02/04/2019 22:34

Look in your outside bins. That is where I found ours.

Dodie66 · 02/04/2019 23:14

Just wondering if I has Velcro on the wallet and that it might have got stuck to an item of clothing or something. Maybe a jumper
Have you checked all clothing in his wardrobe etc or anything it might have stuck to?

purpleboy · 02/04/2019 23:28

What did you son say this evening?

I would also be tempted to leave a trap of sorts. That way you will know for sure one way or the other.

imaleaver · 03/04/2019 12:15

I have an 8 year old. He is very careful with his things. Therefore if he told me he had put a wallet somewhere and it was now not there I would assume immediately one of his siblings had taken it. If you don't have a similar lightfingered sibling I think it is reasonable enough to assume in your mind it was the cleaner. I wouldn't accuse them though as you have no proof. But if you have looked everywhere it probably has been stolen.

DontCallMeShitley · 03/04/2019 14:57

Has he put it in a jacket pocket, like Daddy does?

Other than that I would say it is the cleaner, having been in that position myself. I had a cleaner for years, reliable, hard working, pleasant person. I would notice small amounts of money missing, but was never 100% sure it hadn't gone to pay for the gas, or milk. Then loose change from a drawer went, and other items, including jewellery when there was no money around. Finally one day I was positive as I knew money had gone. I warned everyone else she worked for and they started locking their stuff away when she was around, I told her about the missing money and that I didn't need her any more. It was a shame but I couldn't let it go on.

kattekitt · 03/04/2019 15:08

Any update op?

Inthehatbox · 03/04/2019 15:15

Check every pocket in all his clothes and under the mattress.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 03/04/2019 15:51

I would guess he's slung it somewhere and forgotten...

But...
I would still suspect the cleaner.... Especially with the large coins missing...

I would also serispuly ask your son whether any kids are asking/demanding money from him.?
Is he feeling frightened of anything /anybody.

I would rig up an old mobile on video record... Leave some money lying around.

I would label an envelope something like. collection for John/Jo's birthday present....(assume its your husband's colleague/pal)
Leave a decent amount in there... 40/50£...
And watch the video..

I so hope it isn't your cleaner

safariboot · 03/04/2019 16:04

it was bright blue holographic thing with tropical fish all over it that velcros up into thirds. It was quite a chunky thing and pretty bright and easy to spot.

Would it still be bright blue if it was open with the outside facing down?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's somewhere really stupid. But I wouldn't be surprised if the cleaner nicked it either.

GetOffTheRoof · 03/04/2019 21:36

Did you lay anything out for the cleaner today?

drinkygin · 05/04/2019 08:58

Any update op

Raspberrytruffle · 05/04/2019 09:02

Could there be a possibility that its been one of DC friends? Kids do stuff without thinking it through Sad

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 05/04/2019 09:42

Gawd I can see this being my boys. They’re hopeless at keeping their wallets safe so DH and I make sure they’re kept on a bookshelf, clearly visible.

Have you checked behind radiators? Easy to put a wallet on top intending to tidy it away and it slips down the back. If the coins weren’t part of the birthday money then it does sound like he’s probably put the coins from the money box in the wallet. Could have been pinched after that.

StyleOfTheTimes · 05/04/2019 10:00

Hoping the wallets been found op

Boreddotcom · 05/04/2019 10:05

Couldn't possibly be DH?

BetsyBigNose · 14/04/2019 02:24

@SpoilsburyToastGirl I was just thinking about this thread and your little boy's Birthday money today when DD11 mislaid her own pocket money savings she stores in a little box she's made (thankfully found now - but a good lesson in reasons to keep a tidy bedroom!) Has your DS's wallet turned up? If not, did you get round to leaving something out to see if your Cleaner was tempted or have you managed to speak to them about it?

I really hope it's all been resolved smoothly.
