To ask what you *really* spend on your weekly shop

MyKingdomForACaramel · 31/03/2019 17:42

I swear I am not being goady, and completely understand that many are genuinely on a budget... however as someone who does a weekly shop or a good £59 for two people (and I shop in Lidl) plus can’t seem to pop around the petrol garage without spending £30 a few times I am in awe of those who do a family shop for £30 a week. Also, upon seeing the “what’s in your fridge posts” which I loved- would love to be nosy and ask - what do you honestly spend on shopping each week.

absolute max 30pw in Sainsbury's for me and DD7

JustTwoMoreSecs · 31/03/2019 19:22

100-150£ a week for 2 adults and 2DC (on free school dinners).
I shop on Ocado and top ups from Waitrose but I look for offers for toiletries, meat/fish and kids snacks otherwise it would be at least £30 more.
Takeway once a week, and one brunch out at the weekend.

twilightcafe · 31/03/2019 19:25

Honestly? Including lunches (school/packed/canteen) for two adults and two children, and feeding the cat?
£160

Princessmushroom · 31/03/2019 19:28

About £100 a week for groceries (Ocado), meals out, takeaways (at least 2-3 times a week we eat out or have a takeaway) and toiletries/cleaning products. Oh and everything for the cats.

That’s two adults and three cats.

Yes we could cut down. But we enjoy eating out and we find Aldi false economy. The fruit and veg is awful and going shopping gives me so much rage.

That said, I do love a good freezer/kitchen challenge to keep spending down for a few weeks

Natsku · 31/03/2019 19:29

Before I started meal planning, around 300 euros a week (Finland is expensive! But this includes toiletries and cleaning stuff and nappies and cat food), now it's around 200 a week, sometimes less but also more if I need to pop to the corner shop for something during the week and inevitably ending up buying junk food I don't need.

Natsku · 31/03/2019 19:30

Above is for two adults and an 8 year old and a 1 year old

Whereareyouspot · 31/03/2019 19:30

£250
Maybe more

KimchiLaLa · 31/03/2019 19:31

One "really big" shop a month which is around £70, and a weekly shop of £40ish. For myself, DH and baby DD.

We don't eat a lot of red meat and the only alcohol we get is a bottle of Prosecco, it's usually the baby stuff (eg bulk buying nappies) that pushes the cost up.

zukiecat · 31/03/2019 19:32

We spend about £70/80 per fortnight

That's for me, adult DD, and three cats

We do also like to go to Asda or Tesco for some extra things, we spend about £40 per fortnight there

Elletine · 31/03/2019 19:32

Between £50-£70 depending on whether we need formula or nappies that week.... 2 of us and 1 baby

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 31/03/2019 19:34

Does it count alcohol in?
If yes... About £100 a week. 2 adults.
"Spoilt" and like craft beer. And steak... And wine...
And LOADS of fresh veg and cheese.
Doesn't include cleaning stuff. That's few pounds a month on average.

Grundtal · 31/03/2019 19:35

Probably £120ish a week on average. We usually do a £80 - £100 shop each week plus another £20 - £30 in top ups for fresh stuff like milk, bread, salad etc.

It's at the higher end if we have to buy stuff like washing powder etc, lower end if we don't.

There are 5 of us 2 adults, 2 teens and 1 younger child.

joystir59 · 31/03/2019 19:40

between 40 and 50 a week for two adults and a small dog who is fed on cooked chicken and veg. we shop separately for my MIL and she spends the same a week on food for just herself. We buy her food at Tesco but we shop at Lidl

pontiouspilates · 31/03/2019 19:42

I would think, with top up shops, around £140 per week for 2 adults and 2 teens. Add another £20-30 for booze. We eat out probably once or twice a week, but don't do take aways.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 31/03/2019 19:44

There are three of us. I take out £400 in cash at the beginning of the month. I only use that. So £100 a week. No more no less.

ItsalwaysLTB · 31/03/2019 19:44

Another not sure here but I'd guess £200+ for family of 4 (2 adults 2 primary dc) which would include lunches for me and dc1.

As a pp mentioned I'm intrigued and going to track this week and see what the actual is!

onemouseplace · 31/03/2019 19:44

£160 a week for 2 adults and 3 DC - this includes all meals, including topping up on school lunches for 1 DC, DH's lunches for work - we probably have one (cheap) take out a month and maybe eat out once a month as well. This does not include booze though.

Meralia · 31/03/2019 19:46

£170 a week, 2 adults, 2 teenagers and a toddler.

wrongnamechange · 31/03/2019 19:46

Probably £90-£100 a week for two adults and a 7 and 5 year old (and a small dog). I spend about £40 in M&S on meat and prepped meals and £40 in Aldi on generic foods, fruit and veg and cleaning stuff/non-consumables. Another £20 is on a top up shop towards the end of the week.

onestitchaway · 31/03/2019 19:48

The last 3 months have averaged at £115 per week. 2 adults & 2 children - 1 in nappies and unfortunately seems to leak every brand sort from Pampers Hmm. Mainly work from home so that includes lunches. DD has school dinners mainly at an extra £10 per week.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 31/03/2019 19:48

Ours is ridiculous and i do know we need to cut down

But about £130 a week

Then I'll usually pick up a few bits like bread and milk

And i pop to M&S for tea approximately once a week

And we go to a supermarket to get Saturday night tea (unless its a proper takeaway) and sometimes we spend £80/100 at that point

So probably £700/800 a month

4 in the family...shameful

Thesearmsofmine · 31/03/2019 19:50

Around £75 a week for everything for 2 adults and 3 dc (2/6/8). Around £15 is meat from the butchers and then I shop with either Asda or Tesco for the rest.

AndOfCourseHenryTheHorse · 31/03/2019 19:54

I really hate how much we spend on groceries. I know we could cut down. I’ve started using reusable sanpro, baby wipes and nappies most of the time, which I think helps, though the initial pay out is obviously more.

I think we probably spend £150+ a week for a family of two adults and two small dcs Blush.

Every time I try to do thrifty meal plans though, dh gives me the side eye Hmm.

NotQuiteSlimJim · 31/03/2019 19:55

£120 main shop Aldi
Then £20 in Tesco

2 adults, 2 teenagers and a Dog.

So £150 max a week, however it would be way more expensive if we were to do all our shopping at Tesco. Don't really look at the prices in Aldi as so cheap comparatively.

ValleyoftheHorses · 31/03/2019 19:59

At the moment around £100 per week, 2 adults and a 6 year old, however I have been stocking the cupboards, fridge and freezer recently. With no booze a weekly shop with everything would be around £70-80
