To ask what you *really* spend on your weekly shop

I swear I am not being goady, and completely understand that many are genuinely on a budget... however as someone who does a weekly shop or a good £59 for two people (and I shop in Lidl) plus can’t seem to pop around the petrol garage without spending £30 a few times I am in awe of those who do a family shop for £30 a week. Also, upon seeing the “what’s in your fridge posts” which I loved- would love to be nosy and ask - what do you honestly spend on shopping each week.

Spend about 40/50 a week. Have tried to spend more but just can't seem to do it. That's 2 adults and 3 young children

FlopsyMopsyRabbit · 31/03/2019 18:37

I do a food shop of £60/70 every two weeks with Asda for 2 adults and a cat so around 30/35 a week

Littlebluebird123 · 31/03/2019 18:38

My budget is £93 a week for food. I'm normally under so can afford a takeaway once a month.
I do a big shop for about 80 then the 13 is for milk, bread, fruit top ups.
I make almost everything from scratch, cakes, pizzas, snacks. And the 2 youngest have free school dinners.
We have minimal treat foods, ie crisps, biscuits etc are very rare. So treats are homemade cake, jelly etc.
My freezer and cupboards are nearly always full.
But I do have the advantage of being able to shop around. I'm regularly sent vouchers for 10/15 off a shop from Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Morrisons and if I use them I'm getting a good bit more for my money.
3 adults, 4 kids.

About £75 for the weekly big shop, supermarket varies but more usually Aldi. Two adults and two teens. We would be fine on this but DH has a serious Pepsi Max habit and usually stops on the way home for a bottle and seems to accidentally acquire loads of other crap we don’t need. So probably another £20 a week on that.

We have lots of pets and I buy pet food in bulk online so that’s not included.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 31/03/2019 18:44

Probably about £125 per week for me, DH, 5 year old DS who has hollow legs and DDog. It includes some wine. We probably also eat out or get a takeaway once a week.

Our food bill would be less if I didn’t need to eat low carb to control my diabetes

BeanBag7 · 31/03/2019 18:44

Around £60 a week for 2 adults and toddler (with a small appetite!). That's £40-50 big shop and about £10-15 top ups.
I would easily be able to cut it down if we needed to e.g. buying cheaper veg, non branded cereal, dairy milk instead of nut etc.

Viviene · 31/03/2019 18:45

€150 per week for two adults and a 2 yo.
I buy organic meat / eggs and higher quality food. That being said, significant portion of the budget goes on chocolate.

ANiceLuxury · 31/03/2019 18:45

It depends on where you shop though.

Aldi and Lidl are much cheaper than Sainsburys or M&S.

We spend £140 a week on food only. Thats no cleaning products or nappies etc.

2 adults and 2 children under 7

JustAWaferThinMint · 31/03/2019 18:45

I honestly don't know, which is shameful. Blush

I probably spend around £100 per week in a supermarket, no loyalty, so could be any. I don't do a main shop as I pass a supermarket several times a day, and therefore just buy what I need, when I need it based on a recipe. And then cobble together meals with leftovers.

DH buys meat from an online butcher that he has an account with. We do a big order using his built up credit a couple of times a year.

Plus, occasional trips to Costco.

I could hazard a guess that all in, it is around £800 a month for 2 adults, 2 children including perma-hungry teen, dog and cat.

Kids get fed at school. DH buys his own lunch at work. I WFH so raid the leftovers.

We are lucky that we don't really have to budget.

Walruse · 31/03/2019 18:46

We try to budget £70 a week for me, dh, ds1(5) and ds2(3). Some weeks slightly over some slightly under but evens out.

WeirdCatLady · 31/03/2019 18:48

Around £100-£150 per week on basics; not including alcohol, the weekly takeaways or lunches. There’s three of us and ddog. We have reduced our spending hugely as I’m currently on a diet so there’s far fewer treats in the house.

Baconislife · 31/03/2019 18:48

£120 a week for me,Dp and Dd22 .

What the hell am I buying???🤦🏻‍♀️

BitchQueen90 · 31/03/2019 18:56

Between £40 and £50 for me and one 5 year old. That includes any toiletries and cleaning products.

I don't tend to snack at all so I don't buy snacks for me, just DS. I never buy alcohol as I don't drink unless I'm on a night out. DS on free school meals until Year 3.

I don't budget but I do a weekly meal plan so I only buy exactly what we are going to need for dinner. It makes life easier plus I hate food waste and I consciously try not to waste food.

I'm not particularly bothered about buying branded food. Only thing I like to buy branded is coffee, washing up liquid and laundry products.

AnnieMay100 · 31/03/2019 18:56

I do fortnightly shops and spend £130-150 including cleaning materials and pet food. Top up roughly £5-10 beginning of second week for fresh stuff. One adult 2 children. I could probably cut it down by £20 if I stopped sneaking ‘treats’ in the trolley Blush

IMissGin · 31/03/2019 18:57

About £100-120, £80ish in online shop then the rest on topping up. We also eat out a lot. Too much really

TwittleBee · 31/03/2019 18:59

This can vary for us. Some week's it will only be £30 for 2 adults and a 1 year old but other times it might add up to £70 including the top up shops we might find we do (i.e. often we run out of milk and bread mid week)

BitchQueen90 · 31/03/2019 18:59

Forgot to say I do all my shopping at Asda. Once a month we have a takeaway and once a month we eat out.

Nogoodusername · 31/03/2019 19:00

£150-180 all in (2x shops in the week and picking up the odd extra here and there): 2 adults, 2 children, 2 cats. Though last week we had run out of everything - all cleaning products, all laundry products, cat food etc so it was actually about £200

EleanorLavish · 31/03/2019 19:01

I genuinely haven’t a clue but I’ve been saying for ages that I need to have a look at it. So am going to keep track this week.
I just spent £18 in M&S getting a few bits, mostly for my work lunches.

ScruffGin · 31/03/2019 19:01

I shop with ocado, which is usually around £100 per week for two adults, a one year old and two dogs. Includes the dog food (around £10 per week), also includes nappies, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc.
On top, probably £30-50 at marks and Spencers per month
Rarely includes alcohol, I probably spend about £70 on wine from an online club every 3-4 months.
Rarely eat out or have a takeaway

We eat quite a lot of meat and fresh veg and fruit, which is probably where most of the money goes. I could probably economise but we like good food!

Amanduh · 31/03/2019 19:03

My Aldi or Lidl shop is £30/£35 a week. At the weekend we spend £5/£10 if we fancy extra stuff. I think we even out at £38 a week. That’s two adults and a 2yo, not being thrifty and picking up what we fancy.

onlyhereforthefood · 31/03/2019 19:04

We budget £50 p/week for two of us, plus a cat who can only eat Iams. We probably spend nearer £65 when you include top ups, fine whilst we can afford this but we have plenty of scope to cut back.

cosmicyeti · 31/03/2019 19:05

£250(ish) for 2 parents and 3 adult kids plus a spoilt fussy dog

Nousernameforme · 31/03/2019 19:16

It was between 80 and 100 a week, but dp was getting fed up with the same old and has chucked me some extra money for shopping and so its closer to 130 now. That's everything toiletries cleaning etc. I feed 6 sometimes 7 and at least once a week 8 plus a very fussy cat.

SalrycLuxx · 31/03/2019 19:18

£100 per week for two adults, two kids and a cat.
