To ask what you *really* spend on your weekly shop

I swear I am not being goady, and completely understand that many are genuinely on a budget... however as someone who does a weekly shop or a good £59 for two people (and I shop in Lidl) plus can’t seem to pop around the petrol garage without spending £30 a few times I am in awe of those who do a family shop for £30 a week. Also, upon seeing the “what’s in your fridge posts” which I loved- would love to be nosy and ask - what do you honestly spend on shopping each week.

2 adults, 2 children dog and cat here.

Went shopping today and spent £57... That seems to be around the average. Some weeks it's £45 some weeks £65 if we've run low on everything.

That includes cat and dog food, packed lunches for 3 of us, toiletries, everything.

We do buy more milk later in the week but that's it.

speak2me · 31/03/2019 18:01

My monthly budget is £320, including all cleaning products, personal hygiene etc. This includes night time pull ups for 2dc. We rarely go over that.

Pk37 · 31/03/2019 18:02

£85-£95 a week for 2 adults , 1 child and 2 cats .
Maybe an extra fiver if we need milk or something we forgot for a meal

BluishMoon · 31/03/2019 18:02

About £150 a week for 2 adults, a teenager and a baby. That's more than we can afford tbh but not sure how to cut it back. I don't care about meat but the others all love it, bread makes me ill so I'm always looking for alternatives and none of us drink cows milk and the alternatives are more expensive.

To make things worse we don't have a car anymore so often end up in the local co-op for top ups

AnemoneAnenome · 31/03/2019 18:03

We usually spend £60-70 for the 4 of us. Sometimes £50, sometimes £100. Our youngest is 10 and I've really noticed the difference in our food spending now that our children are closer to adults in portion sizes than half an adult.

However, on top of that we buy bread and cakes on Saturdays, we mostly buy our lunches at school/work, cat food is all bought separately online from zooplus. So the true weekly cost is a lot higher.

PillowTalker · 31/03/2019 18:03

Online shop once a week £95-105, top up at the co-op mid week (bread, milk etc) £10.

School dinners £25

2 adults, 14 yo & 9 yo

Serin · 31/03/2019 18:04

About £140 a week for a family of 5.
Including 2 young adult children and a 16yr old. Also 1 small frog and a cat.
I think we eat very well. Cook fresh food every night.
Bill includes packed lunches for all of us.
I shop mainly in Aldi with Waitrose a couple of times a month for branded stuff.
Home bargains is a life saver for toiletries and cleaning products.

thebear1 · 31/03/2019 18:05

Online Asda shop is between £70 and £90 a week, plus about £15 on a top up. Once a month spend about £40 at a farmer's market. Takeaways and eating out is completely random but not weekly.

thebear1 · 31/03/2019 18:06

That's for 2 adults and 2 primary aged children.

JaneEyre07 · 31/03/2019 18:06

I'd say we spend around £800 a month for DH & I, 2 adult DDs and 2 dogs and a cat.

But we eat a really good diet - I don't buy junk, ready meals or alcohol in that.

snowball28 · 31/03/2019 18:07

Me and two kids it’s £50 a week from Morrison’s, this includes cleaning stuff and toiletries.
We don’t do loads of ‘packet’ snacks and I cook from scratch most days.
Probably an extra £5 a week on milk and other top ups.
I do stick to a very rigid monthly food plan and budget which I just don’t deviate from ever lol, once I do it’s like the floodgates explode and it all goes to shit.

cliquewhyohwhy · 31/03/2019 18:07

Family of five, two adults and three children. £70 a week and around £20 for fresh things every couple of days. Would class a takeaway or a meal out in a different budget.

EnFlique · 31/03/2019 18:08

£45-50 on the big shop each week and then maybe another £5 on top ups of bread/milk if needed.
That’s for 2 adults & a 7 year old shopping at Aldi.
We all take lunch to work/school each day too.

turncloak · 31/03/2019 18:12

About £100 for everything, including toiletries, formula and nappies. Usually £80 on the big shop, and then £20ish in top ups throughout the week.

Two adults, a toddler and a newborn.

LailaByron · 31/03/2019 18:12

About £180-£200 most weeks...😳 there are always 6 of us at home for meals. Sometimes 8 if 2 eldest DC are home from uni.

heroineinahalfshell · 31/03/2019 18:13

It varies. Last week we managed a £35 food shop at Aldi with no top-up. This week we've spent £60 on an online Asda shop, but that did include a £5 tub of Vanish and some cleaning products/shower gel. I'd say it probably averages £50/week for 2 of us, and that includes packed lunches for work. We also spend £45/mo on food & cat litter for 2 cats. We only eat red meat once a week (venison, which is pricey but worth it) and I try to batch cook and freeze extra portions.

Ariela · 31/03/2019 18:13

We grow a lot of our own fruit & veg, so yes our summer shop is definitely on the very low side. I also cook from scratch and freeze another portion as a 'ready meal' so taking advantage of bulk buying

Dippypippy1980 · 31/03/2019 18:14

Two adults, one child - around £150 a week. Doesn’t include lunches, not probably one restaurant dinner a week. Alcohol also bought separately

I also buy cat food every month from amazon - about £50 per month

mrsm43s · 31/03/2019 18:16

£60ish a week for the main shop, 2 adults, 2 teens, for food, cleaning products and toiletries.

But...
Children have cooked lunches included with their school fees
I bulk buy meat online (included in the weekly estimate)
I'm an avid yellow sticker shopper, with a huge freezer
I'm a creative cook, taught by a war-time mum - leftovers (from the cooking dish, not the plate!) are used to make another meal/soup/reheated for lunch etc.
We are happy to eat vege meals frequently
I meal plan
I use Aldi selectively, and stock up on their good staples
No fussy eaters or dietary requirements in the family.
We are all happy with own brand shampoo/shower gel/washing powder etc
I use value products for some items (bin bags/dishwasher tabs/toilet roll etc)

I'm not including alcohol (bar an occasional bottle of wine) as I mostly bulk buy that from Aldi.

I'm not including pet food for the 2 cats, again bulk buy, I think perhaps £40 a month? Maybe less.

Might perhaps top up milk, bread and fruit during the week - no more than £10 ish per week.

Maybe a takeaway once a month £30 ish? and occasionally DH and I go for dinner £50ish (but prob less often than once a month).

Hard to find a final absolute figure, but probably around £80-£90 a week all in including eating out etc.

Viobihi · 31/03/2019 18:17

2 adults & 2 children - we spend no more than £80 a week. Main shop on a Monday/Tuesday usually comes to around £55 then we’ll usually pick up more bread/milk/cereal bars/cooked meat/fruit over the weekend.

Frangipane · 31/03/2019 18:17

6 adults and 3 cats, budget of £130 a week. That includes cleaning products and some toiletries. Sometimes I spend more, sometimes less.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 31/03/2019 18:19

Around 100 pound main shop but I do top ups for milk and bread and other stuff. That's for 2 adults and 4 kids and we mainly shop in Aldi.

Viobihi · 31/03/2019 18:19

Oh, and we do our main food shop in Tesco. It doesn’t include toiletries but does include cleaning products. If we pick up stuff over the weekend it’s usually from Lidl. I get my main shop delivered, that’s why I use Tesco for that.

Shadowboy · 31/03/2019 18:20

Genuinely- approx £85-£90 online which is delivered every Saturday. Friday night we have fish and chips and the OH has a beer or two so that’s about £20 so approx £110 per week for a family includes nappies and toiletries. Dog food and guinea pig food is separate.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 31/03/2019 18:22

I spent £56 in Lidl yesterday and £80 in Tesco the week before so it varies depending if I need to buy staples for the larder, loo rolls, kitchen towel, hygiene products etc that I don’t need to buy every week.. 4 adults and 3 cats but my 2 adult sons doing a lot of cooking for themselves and will buy what they want themselves. They also buy their own hygiene products, soft drinks and any treats they want.
