But my DP is insistent it should be him Sad my reasoning is I'm the one stuck at home with the kids so surely it would give me more freedom, instead of relying on him or waiting for him to become available?
Who is BU

Don't overthink these things, just make a start. Lots of people buy a car before they can drive, usually if they've got a spouse or parent who can take them out in it. Hopefully it won't be too long before one of you passes. Insurance is a funny old thing, where you live is a big determiner, and how likely that particular make and model of car is likely to be involved in an accident using statistical data so sometimes typical small engine learner cars like a Micra, Corsa etc can have higher insurance quotes than a bigger engine 'mum' car. That's what I found anyway, my 1.4 Mazda was much less than a 1.0 Micra, also we moved closer to our city centre and the insurance jumped by a couple hundred.

@Harumph - genuinely snorted with laughter. Thank you!

@Lifecraft. Yeah? And when it takes years to pass, it's a constant reminder of what you can't have. So who's the 'moron' now?

You are. If that happened, it would be nothing to do with bad luck, but purely due to lack of ability.

Telling someone not to do something because you happen to
believe some ridiculous superstition is not a very nice thing to do. If you can't give someone logical advice, then keep your trap shut.

I think if you have had lessons previously and your DP hasn't it would make sense for you to get your license first. It might be worth you both sitting some online theory tests to see if one of you consisently scores higher as obviously you'll need to pass that first. Worth checking what the insurance would be for both of you and if one is considerably cheaper that's worth bearing in mind too.
