But my DP is insistent it should be him Sad my reasoning is I'm the one stuck at home with the kids so surely it would give me more freedom, instead of relying on him or waiting for him to become available?
Who is BU

You must tel me where you live OP to get intensive courses at 1985 prices Hmm

jameswong · 30/03/2019 16:26

One of life's winners here ffs

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:28

Oh yes just because your area isn't as cheap, my area couldn't possibly be Hmm fs why would I make up that insignificant detail? I'm on the website right now and it states 255. Unless I'm reading the wrong thing but I don't appear to be
"Perfect for people who failed their test and need a refresher before re taking their test, Or have done almost everything as a learner driver but need a quick test.
If you need a theory you would normally do that first (we book it) and a few days later begin using your 15 hours up & would sit the practical test in the last hour"

There's a huge difference between being able to afford lessons and actually being able to afford to drive.

I agree with this. With lessons you can spread the cost, pay by the hour, miss a week or 2 if there's another expense that suddenly needs paying. However, once you've passed it's Mot, Tax, insurance, constant refueling and so on.

I would have agreed with those saying sell the car, but i'm worried it won't sell for much more than you paid for it so you woudn't necessarily be better off by doing so. However you need to try and find a way to use the car as a cheaper way of practicing, either with a friend or relative to help save on driving lesson costs.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/03/2019 16:29

Hmm. I did an intensive course six years ago with about 25 hours of lessons under my belt and it cost £900.

Dramatical · 30/03/2019 16:31

I was referring to the £400 for the non experienced.

I'm a bit baffled though, are you about to get 15 hours for £200? Because if that's the case I can't see why the problem with you learning either before or after your OH because that's an absolute bargain

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:32

It won't sell for more than I paid, if it even sells at all so I feel that option is pointless.
I've had almost 40 hours of lessons, albeit a while ago as I haven't long given birth but I done 4 less back in January so I feel 15hours is more than enough, it does get more expensive if you need more hours. The 20 hours one is 285 and so on

When was your last lesson? The test these days is very different even from a few years ago, with satnavs and independent driving. If it's been more than a year from your last lesson, I wouldn't say you're anywhere near test ready.

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:34

Dramatical, there is a guy in our town who does those courses, and at the end of it you take your test and that's his prices which I've just pulled from his website.
DP hasn't had that many lessons, maybe about 30 hours worth but that was august last year, he isn't keen/doesn't fancy the idea of the all intensive and would prefer to have lessons singly if that makes sense?

OP posts:
Dramatical · 30/03/2019 16:35

I'm not saying otherwise, I'm saying if it's that cheap why the massive thread about who should learn? Just one of you do it, then the other

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:35

I done 4 lessons in January, as I got birthday money (I had hoped to carry on but never did)
Before that I was having constant lessons back in May and June so yeah a little while ago I know

Cottagelife1 · 30/03/2019 16:38

@grainykite yes there are Loads of cars that fit three car seats in the back? What ages are your DC?? Are you still rear facing them?? I say sell the car and deal with buying one once you both have passed!

Ginseng1 · 30/03/2019 16:38

Can't believe everyone being so negative to OP! If someone else on here moaning how they can't get to a or b etc they'd be told 'learn to drive'. & sounds like you've more lessons under your belt op you should get your test first unless he needs for works. And it's 'his' money? So annoying. who is looking after the children????

Tink88 · 30/03/2019 16:39

Have you also taken the cost of 3 car seats into account? That seems very cheap for 15 hours and I’m in a cheap area I would be wary there’s never a gaurentee to pass either I know a few people who said those courses are a waste of money and they had experience.

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:40

Yup, we currently have 2 car seats as it is so only need 1 more

OP posts:
BricksInTheWall · 30/03/2019 16:41

Whoever should do it first should be the one who will most benefit from having a car. If you need it to get out and about with the kids, then in my book that trumps needing it to get to work and have it sit in a car park all day when he manages without one now.

Cottagelife1 · 30/03/2019 16:45

@grainykite what kind of car seats? You do know that not all car seats are compatible with all cars?? So you need to check the compatibility of them with your car! What’s the make and Model of your car? And what kind of car seats do you have I can look up th compatibility for you if you would like??

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:48

They've managed to fit in other cars we've needed to be in so I'm sure it'll be fine. When the time comes we will get them checked at halfords

OP posts:
cheeseypizza · 30/03/2019 16:51

Good luck OP. I hope it all works out. I think you should learn first. You can always drop and pick up your DH for work, then you will have the car during the day. It makes more sense.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/03/2019 16:53

If both of you have had driving lessons before is there a reason why neither of you have passed a test?

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:53

Sorry didn't mean that to sound snarky, I wouldn't have thought about them not fitting Blush will definitely get them checked out though when that time comes thanks pp

OP posts:
Cottagelife1 · 30/03/2019 16:56

@grainykite with all due respect they may look like they fit but car seats need to be compatible and installed properly (I’m fairly dubious of halfords tbh 😬) but anyway, as you will be a new driver I would opt for the best car seats you can get with side impact etc. I would even consider rear facing your children 4 and under. I’m not saying you’ll be a crap driver but as a new driver I would have struggled in a 7 seater with and three kids distracting me 😫😬

LakieLady · 30/03/2019 16:58

Will definitely be doing driving before the end of the year

You can't possibly know that! There are often threads on here started by people who repeatedly fail test after test. And the wait for test appointments can be long in some areas.

If the car was such a bargain, you should be able to sell it for more than you paid for it. Then use the money for both of you to have lessons. Save up again while you're learning and buy another car when one of you has passed the driving test.

And bear in mind that insurance for new drivers is expensive.

grainykite · 30/03/2019 16:58

The 2 car seats I have are rear facing so that isn't a problem, Halfords is the only place I have to get them checked, not sure where else does it

OP posts:
Cottagelife1 · 30/03/2019 17:06

@grainykite great just check their height and weight restrictions when you pass as you may need to change them when the time comes.
