AIBU to say no to house viewers using my toilet?!

Ok so I’m currently selling my home and I’m astounded by the number of people who ask to use the toilet! I just don’t get it, yeah sure small kids I can understand they can’t always hold it. But surely if you are an adult in strangers home you can hold it and pop into the petrol station/ cafe before or after?! I’m not talking about a downstairs cloakroom, the upstairs family bathroom. I think maybe I wouldn’t mind so much if it downstairs and just the toilet. Hmm
I hate strangers using my loo... AIBU?! Please tell me I’m not alone

You can check cleanliness and water pressure etc without using the facilities yourself. How far do you go though? Do you insist they turn on the boiler so you can check all the radiators work and there's hot water in all taps? Do you go around with a small electrical appliance testing all the sockets? Do you go and turn on every light? I think it's a feeble excuse that people go and use the loo just to check it's working!

BertrandRussell · 29/03/2019 11:16

It really isn’t OK to be so precious about your loo. I suggest some counselling?

BertrandRussell · 29/03/2019 11:17

“I think it's a feeble excuse that people go and use the loo just to check it's working!”
So do I. I think they just need a pee. Like normal human beings.

Barbie222 · 29/03/2019 13:48

I'd be flushing it right in front of you if I didn't need to go. I've moved into places with just a dribble of pressure upstairs so I'd be turning on all the taps, flushing loo and not making a secret of it.

Hairynick · 29/03/2019 13:50

Just couldn't begrudge someone a pish Hmm

DilliDingDillyDong · 29/03/2019 14:00

It's just a bog. Confused

woollyheart · 29/03/2019 14:12

Having recently rented, I've seen what gets checked in estate agents surveys. A lot of attention to detail in the house decoration, but no attention to whether toilets flush or not. I'd be checking because no one else bothers.

dreamalittlebiggerdarling · 29/03/2019 14:56

I just let a tradesman use my loo and even offered to get loo roll as the roll in my downstairs loo is running out, in case he needed a poo. Should I be worried?! Shock

Otherpeoplesteens · 29/03/2019 15:08

I've lived in a few places with limited access to sanitation and I cannot conceive of any circumstances where I would deny access to my toilet to a visitor. It's pretty basic human decency. Sure, if it gets left in a mucky state it's irritating, but that's life and it's not as if some of my friends and family can't be a bit careless at times. I clean and move on.

If I was viewing a property with a view to buying it, I'd also be flushing and running taps in full view if I didn't need to go. If I did, and was told I couldn't then I'd automatically assume there was a problem being hidden and all things being equal I'd be put off. Poor flushing can sometimes be rectified easily if it's a problem with - say - the syphon/diaphram, but if it's a design issue with the toilet itself then it starts to get expensive. If the problem is low water pressure, that's a complete deal-breaker.

I think it's odd unless you're pregnant & have those ensuing loo issues. I worked in Sales & Lettings for 5years & never had anyone ask that. But the local town we were in is full of coffee shops & loos all v close. My mum sold 4houses + our MIL's & never had anyone ask. My agency did have to stop letting people have a wander back upstairs or downstairs on their own while we waited in one room alone tho: due to complaints beds were obviously being sat on, drawers were being opened & left open tho.

Dieu · 29/03/2019 16:25

Only on Mumsnet could this oddity of a question be asked!
Bet you hate answering your door as well, OP Wink

maggienolia · 29/03/2019 16:51

One elderly lady we worked with tried to charge people £1 for using the toilet in her house.
One way of supplementing her income I suppose.

Mrskeats · 29/03/2019 17:27

Op needs a bigger problem Hmm

MadameAnchou · 29/03/2019 17:44

I would think you were hiding something/vendor from Hell. You'd hate me - I open all the drawers and cupboards in the kitchen (and anywhere else if they are built in units)(been burned many a time with units that were only covering the wall), turn on all the lights, go in the bathroom and flush the toilet whilst the water is on/switch on the shower, make sure any free standing wardrobes are not hiding damaged walls or damp (have had this happen) and check round the furniture/wall hangings to see if it's been artfully moved to hide damage or damp. I don't really care if this offends the vendor (they're usually not there anyhow) or EA, I'm the one borrowing a great sum of money to buy the place and working to pay the mortgage (and I wouldn't want to buy from a vendor who's still that attached to their house that they've put on the market to sell). It's a business transaction.

Livingoncake · 29/03/2019 22:49

The thing is, quite apart from all of the very valid points made by PPs, denying a human being the use of a loo when they need it is just plain unkind.

OP, if you said “no” to me or one of my family using your loo, I would honestly think you’re not a decent, kind person. I wouldn’t buy your house because who needs the hassle of a drawn-out legal process with someone who is that mean?

smileannie · 29/03/2019 23:20

I always do so that I can check toilet flush and water pressure.
