AIBU to say no to house viewers using my toilet?!

Ok so I’m currently selling my home and I’m astounded by the number of people who ask to use the toilet! I just don’t get it, yeah sure small kids I can understand they can’t always hold it. But surely if you are an adult in strangers home you can hold it and pop into the petrol station/ cafe before or after?! I’m not talking about a downstairs cloakroom, the upstairs family bathroom. I think maybe I wouldn’t mind so much if it downstairs and just the toilet. Hmm
I hate strangers using my loo... AIBU?! Please tell me I’m not alone

Whilst I wouldn't like it tbh its BU to refuse

Greensleeves · 28/03/2019 22:07

I wouldn't like it either, I hate strangers using my loo. Bad enough sharing it with two teenage slobs boys.

I wouldn't dream of letting a visitor see my discomfiture, though - you just CAN'T refuse somebody access to the toilet. It would be unpardonably rude.

AFPH123 · 28/03/2019 22:10

As someone who has a family member with Crohn’s disease I would never refuse.

Almost40andweeping · 28/03/2019 22:11

As if you are being unreasonable!!! It’s weird!! A house viewing takes about 30 mins (unless your house is massive!). People can hold it for that long. I would never ask to use a strangers loo.

Asking about water pressure and your boiler is normal but to use your lav is rude!

When we bought ours, the kid pulled her potty round the house and shit twice. She was 3 and I felt awkward; she went in the lounge and attic. We had a baby with us and I still thought it wrong.

CantHoldIt · 28/03/2019 22:11

Don’t think I’d actually refuse them, I just wouldn’t do it myself and after my experience the other day I’m really hoping I don’t get any more!!

It's a tad precious. If you are selling your house then people will want to test the flush, hot water etc. I was caught out years ago when I was too polite to ask to test things and ended up with an oven with no door (hidden by a tea towel) and a shit bathroom with a toilet that didn't flush and a leaky shower. Fuck that. Next time if I can't use the toilet I assume you are hiding something

Echobelly · 28/03/2019 22:13

Never occurred to me not to let people use the loo when showing my home (but then I've usually not been there when it happens) Often viewers will be hopping from house to house, so it's not surprising they may need the loo. Toilets are there to be used!

SadOtter · 28/03/2019 22:13

If you said no I would then be concerned you were hiding an issue with the toilet or the sink.

Almost40andweeping · 28/03/2019 22:14

My late MIL had chron’s. I don’t even think that’s an excuse; unless you’ve travelled a long way. To expect to use a strangers toilet is just rude.

yumyumpoppycat · 28/03/2019 22:15

yuk to man who sprinkled on your seat and floor nbu to be upset about that, however I think you have to grin and bare it. Some people might ask to use the loo but in reality just be flushing the toilet to check the plumbing.

Almost40andweeping · 28/03/2019 22:16

If they wanted to check the pressure yes, no issue. To have a shit, nah.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 28/03/2019 22:16

If a seller refused to let me use toilet I would think they were hiding something🤔

MulticolourMophead · 28/03/2019 22:18

I can understand the OP's discomfort. If you are going to ask to use the toilet on a viewing, don't leave it in a mess.

@Almost40andweeping Exactly that!! I don’t want to clean up after someone else 🤢🤢

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 28/03/2019 22:21

Have you tried demonstrating the water pressure to them? Showing them the flush and turning taps and shower on to demonstrate? It might save people feeling they have to be sneaky.

CallMeRachel · 28/03/2019 22:21

Wouldn't be exactly comfortable with strangers using my loo either but you really can't refuse.

Yuk to the clarty man pissing everywhere over your seat and floor Shock He could at least have wiped it up!

If someone else asks just make a tongue in cheek comment about them not leaving a mess like the last one Grin

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 28/03/2019 22:22

It's one of the things you're advised to do when house hunting! As people have said, it's to check it all works. Probably a good idea to do a demo for them!

Gwenhwyfar · 28/03/2019 22:23

So Mumsnet. I've never heard of anyone in real life having a problem with someone using their toilet, but it's a common problem in Mumsnet land.

RSAcre · 28/03/2019 22:24

@CantHoldIt

Of course YANBU. So long as -

  1. you are comfortable with straight-facedly telling a person you have invited into your home that they are not welcome to relief themselves, &
  2. you are happy for them to wonder what's wrong with your khazi & therefore decide not to buy your house
Gwenhwyfar · 28/03/2019 22:25

"Probably a good idea to do a demo for them!"

LOL. I'm not sure you thought about how that sentence could be understood.

SwoopTheJackpot · 28/03/2019 22:26

YABU. It's not like they're asking to have a snooze in your bed. It's a toilet!

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 28/03/2019 22:26

What is it with people on MN being so protective of their bloody toilets?

Considering they'll potentially be buying it from you I don't think using it is too much to ask.

RSAcre · 28/03/2019 22:27

rats - "relieve" not "relief"

But while I'm here - @CantHoldIt -
did you NC purely for this thread, or is this a piss-take?

Gwenhwyfar · 28/03/2019 22:27

"Often viewers will be hopping from house to house, so it's not surprising they may need the loo. Toilets are there to be used!"

They could be coming from or going anywhere. Not necessarily coming from their home.
I've never heard this about not using a stranger's toilet before.
