To think the only viable Brexit option now is to revoke A50

Theresa Mays speech last night was a disgrace and will only have hardened MP’s positions - there’s no way her WA will get voted through, even if another vote is allowed.

There is no appetite for No Deal from anyone who understands its consequences so that just leaves revoke.

TM has been the master of saying one thing and doing the complete opposite.

I’m now convinced she’s going to revoke and resign.

Or is that just wishful thinking?

The single market though is really crucial to our prosperity. CU on its own is damage limitation.

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 12:59

The real issue is TM setting Freedom of Movement as a red line. That's really limited her options.

LaurieMarlow · 22/03/2019 13:10

May is done for. The most likely outcome now is another vote on her deal, which won’t go through. Then she’ll either resign or a vote of no confidence from Corbyn prompting a GE.

The EU will grant more time in those circumstances I believe.

I want to see the leaving process put into the hands of labour or some kind of cross party coalition.

The Tories clearly can’t deliver this without marching us off the ‘no deal’ cliff. They have loads of chances and they’ve fucked up at every single turn.

LaurieMarlow · 22/03/2019 13:17

how about remainers have a go as to where the EU will be and what it will look like, and how it will have extended its powers over the next decade

Why are leavers so fixated on the issue of EU extending its powers?

Shouldn’t you be slightly more worried about what Russia and China get up to over the next decade? And the US if it continues its insular protectionism?

Personally I’d far prefer we got closer to Germany rather than find ourselves at the mercy of Putin. Though leavers seem determined to play right into his hands Confused

"SO.. No deal Brexit it is, on the 29th March"
Didn't we get an extension to 12 April yesterday?

ahtellthee · 22/03/2019 15:11

The extension is only applicable if TM can get her deal passed

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 15:23

No, what you have just said is the case for the 22 May extension. If the deal doesn't pass we extend to 12 April.
Or am I getting really confused?

scaryteacher · 22/03/2019 15:33

Boris If you look at the Commission work papers for 2018, this is what is on the stocks and coming our way... ERM 2 reinforcement - the first step to the euro for the 9 remaining sovereign currency nations. Tax and budget normalisation - Brussels setting the minimum wage for each member, 3% of GDP budgets, directives on how that budget will be spent, more direct (other than the current VAT take) EU taxes, normalised corporation tax at not < 23.5%, new inheritance laws with the Napoleonic stamp clearly visible and so on.

When you then see that some of this will be passed as non legislative processes so the Council won't be involved, thus no involvement of the national govts; or it's by QMV, and we are outvoted, then we are stuffed.

Do you really not see where all this is going? Macron is spouting on about more Europe as the answer to all the woes besetting the bloc, so yet again the acquis is ratcheted up again, and the EU extends its reach.

How did you feel about the EU flag on the armoured vehicles used against the gilets jaunes in Paris? Is that in line with article 7 TEU? Given our government won't allow water cannon, which are commonly in use on the continent, is this what national governments allow?

Boris, this is something that is done to me. I wasn't allowed to vote about going into the EU as I was too young. I have supported EU sceptic parties, and will do so in the future if we don't get out now. The referendum was a chance for me to say that I want out completely of the structures of the EU.

scaryteacher · 22/03/2019 15:42

laurie Why do you want to be closer to a country that cannot be arsed to pay for its own defence and expects to ride on everyone else's coat tails?

Germany should be worried about Russia gets up to, as it is enabling it. The UK are the ones with the functioning Armed Forces who will be expected to fight. At least we have real weapons, not broom handles, and we have planes that can get off the runways unlike Germany. Germany are the ones playing into Putin's hands with Nordstream 2; and they have been warned by the US about allowing the Chinese any access in building their 5G. If they do, they will be shut out of intelligence sharing. Germany won't defend itself let alone others, as it is yet again, cutting defence spending.

If Trump continues to support NATO, then hopefully Russia will not push too far again, and China is using economic means to inveigle its way into other countries (see Sri Lanka) as opposed to military might.

Nameisthegame · 22/03/2019 15:45

Not sure if anyone has posted the petition link petition.parliament.uk/petitions/241584
Almost half way to 4 million

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 15:46

It's more than that surely?? I'm so confused by people's comments

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 15:53

It's 3.3m! Way more than half way

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 16:03

Are we leaving on 29 March or 12 April? Does anyone, including the bbc, actually report the facts?

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 16:33

anyone? I'm so tired of trying to make sense of this and being told contradictory statements.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 22/03/2019 16:39

No, what you have just said is the case for the 22 May extension. If the deal doesn't pass we extend to 12 April

This is correct

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 16:46

Every thread I am on is cofusing me today. Nothi g makes sense. People are contradicting themselves and no one else seems to notice.

LoudBatPerson · 22/03/2019 16:48

I just wanted to add one little caveat to this. If the WA is rejected for the third time, parliament will have to vote to extend the date until the 12th of April.

Currently, the legal position is leaving on 29th April, either with or without a deal. This law will have to be changed if we want to extend until 12th April, and part of doing this will involve a commons vote.

I think it would be extremely hard for parliament NOT to vote for this, however, I wouldn't put money on anything right now.

LoudBatPerson · 22/03/2019 16:50

@stealthpolarbear - The reason you are seeing so many different bits of information, is that right now, it is now known what will happen.

There is a flow chart on this article: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47665289 , which shows the possible outcomes and pathways to them.

HumblePi · 22/03/2019 16:50

Does anyone know if its true that Macron has authorised the army to assist the police at the gilets jaune protests, and they will be allowed to open fire?

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 16:51

Do you mean 29 March?

LoudBatPerson · 22/03/2019 16:52

Do you mean 29 March?

Yes sorry!

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 17:01

I look at those flow charts on the bbc. Then I come on here where people condently assert the opposite. I am missing a bit chunk of the picture and being confused by inconsistencies

LoudBatPerson · 22/03/2019 17:06

yep, that just about sums it up at the moment.

Things are changing quickly, and the timelines and outcomes are changing with them. Until we get the orders of business and the votes start being held next week, there will be a lot of theories, possibilities and rallying!

It is hugely frustrating, and I struggle to follow it all, and I have always been plugged in and very politically literate (family has always been heavily involved).

Even people who sound so sure they know exactly what will happen, can't say for certain. The whole situation is very fluid at the moment.

SaskiaRembrandt · 22/03/2019 18:03

This ^. Everyone is confused because there are so many possible outcomes. Anyone claiming to know is mistaken.

lubeybooby · 23/03/2019 08:49

Ok so now as I understand it... (again please if I have this wrong please tell me)

We have been given til 12th April, or 22nd May to complete legislation etc if Theresa gets her deal through

However there seems to be talk of May not even trying to get her deal through anymore and asking for a longer extension that would mean we are supposed to vote in the European elections

ugh

This mess is worse than my teenage bedroom
