Actually, the numbers signing from abrad are very small and tend to be from UK residents currently living on the continent.

I am personally getting quite scared at the sheer amount of vitriol, aggression and hatred, people are feeling and bowing due to this whole thing. I posted a comment on a news article yesterday, nothing remotely inflammatory or alluding to being on one side or another and my inbox was slammed with posts telling me I was a stuck up cunt, a fat whore, scum, etc etc. Post after post is aggression from people wanting blood if a no deal brexit doesn't happen, it's awful.

Melroses · 22/03/2019 15:36

I posted something very very bland and naice and non-partisan about the petition on another forum and started a bun fight Confused.

On the plus side, it was only one grumpy person - the others just got a bit unexpectedly swept up in it.

badlydrawnperson · 22/03/2019 15:44

I remember the original referendum to join the Common Market.

You very obviously don't since it was not a referendum to join. We were already members and had been for more than two years.

It was actually very similar to the 2016 one in that it was caused by splits in the ruling government.

Dumdedumdedum · 22/03/2019 15:47

badlydrawnperson - gosh, no, I clearly don't, though I certainly remember all the argy-bargying. I hadn't realised it was one to stay in. In which case it was much better formulated than the 2016 one Grin

badlydrawnperson · 22/03/2019 15:50

@Dumdedumdedum. I remember it - but I disagree with your analysis. I suspect the nature of the campaigns etc would have been remembered with similar rose tints if we'd voted the same way in 2016 that we did in 1975. In fact I suspect a lot of people who remembered the 1975 one thought this one would be the same - a lot of hot air then a sigh and carry on.

Grin Notsomuch. Merde alors.
To be honest, I was then, as I still am, an entrenched British/French European, so, with my appalling memory of my student days, I'm guessing that though I was aware of the arguments going on, I didn't want to know about the other side, as I knew how I was voting in any case. Which probably applies to both sides now. (Joni Mitchell.)

I think this is missing the main issue with this petition. Those voting from abroad may be British expats or they may not be, we don't know, and you're right they're not a huge percentage.

The bigger issue is that there are a few million EU and non-EU foreign nationals who are not British citizens living in the UK who can vote in these petitions but are not eligible to vote in a referendum on eu membership.

They've all got UK postcodes as they live here so there's no way of knowing what proportion of the 3m votes are from people who were not actually eligible to vote in the referendum.

No one knows, but I'd guess a healthy proportion of these votes are from eu citizens residing in the UK with a vested interest in remaining.

Unreasonable bastards, expressing an opinion on something that will affect them.

The Gov Petitions website says: Anyone can start a petition as long as they are a British citizen or UK resident, so presumably the same people can sign...

PutsFootInIt · 23/03/2019 00:32

I think eveyone knows these petitions are unverifiable really, but the point of it is to make mps take notice and as a reaction to May's speech to ssy 'no, you're not on our side'.

Aria999 · 23/03/2019 14:42

The whole thing just makes me want to cry. Brexit. The country so divided, the future so bleak.

Aria999 · 23/03/2019 14:48

People, places
Pursuing the chases
Our moments were chosen
Her senses explosion
Take your pulse and read it well
She never said you'd only get one chance
Pay your debt and bleed as well
You're living in the same circumstances
The end of an era
Our future no clearer
My people no stronger
The blame I lay on her
Wonderland, wonderland
It's beautiful
Wonderland, wonderland
It's beautiful
Take your pulse and read it well
She never said you'd only get one chance
Pay your debt and bleed as well
You're living in the same circumstances
The end of an era
Our future no clearer
My people no stronger
The blame I lay on her

StoneofDestiny · 23/03/2019 18:56

Over 4 and a half million 👍

BarbaraofSevillle · 23/03/2019 19:04

Amazing. But the disgusting consequence is that the woman who started the petition has been receiving death threats and has had her Facebook account hacked.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-47678275

What is wrong with people?

Funkaccino · 23/03/2019 20:29

Can't say I'm even a little bit surprised Barabraofseville

StoneofDestiny · 23/03/2019 21:17

Some serious sickoes about sadly.

Clavinova · 24/03/2019 00:25

But the disgusting consequence is that the woman who started the petition has been receiving death threats and has had her Facebook account hacked.

From the BBC link;

Since the success of her petition, Mrs Georgiadou has faced criticism over posts she allegedly made on social media, using threatening language about the prime minister.

She said she had no memory of the posts.

She said:"It must have been a cut and paste job.The dates were all wrong."

If you had been accused of using threatening language about the prime minister on social media (she is supposed to have discussed shooting the PM) - wouldn't you be a bit more emphatic regarding your innocence? Her responses sound a bit lame to me.

I hope the police investigate both sides of her story.

LimaLemur · 24/03/2019 12:54

It’s awful to hear about the death threats that she’s had - I was shocked when I heard.

NewYear2018 · 24/03/2019 13:25

'Since the success of her petition, Mrs Georgiadou has faced criticism over posts she allegedly made on social media, using threatening language about the prime minister.'

This has originated from the Guido Fawkes blog and then reported on the Mail website. It could quite likely be a smear tactic. Remarks could also have been taken out of context.

God I had to go to the DailyHeil for that info. Feeling sick now.

StoneofDestiny · 24/03/2019 14:02

It's nearly 5 million now 👍

LimaLemur · 24/03/2019 14:33

It’s over 5 million, now! Smile

NewYear2018 · 24/03/2019 14:45

5,019,009 signatures

You can't ignore us now T May!

LimaLemur · 24/03/2019 14:57

I’m really hoping that the government will sit up and take notice now!

keepforgettingmyusername · 24/03/2019 16:23

I find it interesting that the government hasn't come up with a response yet. They have responded to previous petitions I've signed asking for 2nd referendum just saying no basically. Presumably they've realised when 5 million people have signed, they can't just dismiss us with a no.
