I have started watching Turn Up Charlie. I think he would be great as Bond. Bit of a departure what with the East End accent and looking (struggling to say what I mean accurately here) . A bit rough around the edges looking rather than polished if you see what I mean. And yes. He is a non minger crush of mine😀! Or a woman. Suggestions?

Doris

CustardySergeant · 19/03/2019 13:47

He's been called Iris and Doris in this thread so far. He looks more like a Gladys to me. Grin

Twuntsrule · 19/03/2019 19:29

Is Jonathan Rhys Meyer too old? He was terrific in "From Paris With Love." Easy on the eyes, too!
I suppose Channing Tatum is too bulky and American to be considered
Definitely NOT Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan, or Tom Hardy. Ugh, ugh, ugh.
After seeing Henry Cavill in the last Mission: Impossible flick, I thought, hmm...without that beard, he could be Bond. Maybe.
I wasn't enthused about Daniel Craig, but then saw Casino Royale and fell in love/lust. So perhaps we can trust the creative team to cast an appropriate actor.

IcedPurple · 19/03/2019 19:39

Is Jonathan Rhys Meyer too old?

He's 41, meaning he would be well into his mid 40s by the time a new Bond would make his first film so yes, he is too old.

Also, as he showed in "The Tudors" he had difficulty sustaining a convincing British accent for long, and if you ask me, really doesn't have the 'it' factor to be Bond.

SaucyJack · 19/03/2019 19:41

JRM is too mad to be Bond. He’s a massive fucking liability in RL, and I think he’s at his best when he can play to his own strengths.

He’d make a great Bond villain tho.

IcedPurple · 19/03/2019 19:51

That too. JRM has serious alcohol problems and I doubt he'd get a role in a major production even if he were perfect for it. Which he is not in this case.

Twuntsrule · 19/03/2019 20:11

Thank you, IcedPurple and Saucy Jack. I wasn't aware of JRM's age. And I'd heard stories about his drinking, but had hoped he'd gotten control of it. Oh well.
How about one of the Hemsworth brothers? I know they're from Australia, but so was George Lazenby, and he was a better Bond than Tim Dalton (IMHO).
Great thread!

IcedPurple · 19/03/2019 20:14

The Hemsworth bros are too well-known and in the case of Chris, already the star of a major franchise, so difficult to 're-brand'.

As I've said before, I bet that the next Bond will be a relatively unknown actor, and none of those mentioned above.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 19/03/2019 20:14

In Ian Fleming's stories, James Bond is in his mid-to-late thirties, but does not age. In Moonraker, he admits to being eight years shy of mandatory retirement age from the 00 section—45—which would mean he was 37 at the time.

Most of the names mentioned on this thread are too old.

The next Bond is still 3-4 years away from making his debut.

PoohneedsaPimms · 19/03/2019 20:25

Richard Madden (Bodyguard) or Allen Leech (Branson from Downton) for me, they must be the right age?

IcedPurple · 19/03/2019 20:36

Allan Leech is going to have to stop indulging in Mrs. Patmore's pies if he's to aspire to be Bond. He was looking a right chubster in the last series of Downton.

Anyway, he's not Bond material. On the purely superficial level, he's just not handsome enough.

CourageCalls · 19/03/2019 20:37

I used to think hiddles but unfortunately he lost his sexy with the frolicking on the beach with teenagers in a wife beater debacle.

Now I'm thinking Joseph Morgan definitely right type and probably not a household name.

As others have said 15 years ago James Purefoy actually would now and he's 20+ older than me!

IcedPurple · 19/03/2019 20:47

Lol!

Tom Hiddleston was clearly 'auditioning' for Bond in "The Night Manager" but although he's hot and is a good actor with a posh English accent, he hasn't got that 'edge' neccessary to be Bond. The Hiddeswift debacle only confirmed this.

James Purefoy would indeed have been perfect back in the day, but he's much too old now, which is a shame.

PoohneedsaPimms · 19/03/2019 20:49

Iced purple that was hilarious, Mrs Patmore’s pies!! Ok, sticking with Richard Madden or Matthew Goode as another poster suggested, think he could do the steely side well...

IcedPurple · 19/03/2019 20:53

Ok, sticking with Richard Madden or Matthew Goode as another poster suggested, think he could do the steely side well...

Hmmmm.... Richard Madden also doesn't have that 'edge' for me, but maybe.

Matthew Goode is well fit and does look great in a well fitted suit but again he comes across as a bit 'naice' for Bond. Also, he's already 40 so pushing it age-wise.

Back to the drawing board....but as I keep saying, I'd bet the price of a vintage Aston Martin that the next Bond will be someone none of us has mentioned here, and many of us have never heard of.

Mmmhmmokdear · 19/03/2019 23:34

How about Ioan Gruffud? Or is he too old now?

Lucked · 19/03/2019 23:50

James Norton gets my vote, he blew me away in Happy valley.

I think they should go youngish, bit of an origins story. I know in the first Daniel Craig you see his first kill but it would be I intresting to see the lead up to that.

SleepingSloth · 19/03/2019 23:54

Theo James would be amazing as a few others on here have said. His voice is amazing and he's very attractive. 😍

gluteustothemaximus · 19/03/2019 23:56

Richard Madden.

GrimDamnFanjo · 20/03/2019 00:08

I'd like an unknown to be honest.
I'd be surprised if they strayed from the thirtysomething posh white man...
If they did then I'd like to see Sacha Dhawan in the role.

Scotsrule · 20/03/2019 00:12

custardysergeant

Look at the time of that post - early morning typo, I should just stick to reading at that time, save me getting into trouble. 😉

AliceAforethought · 20/03/2019 00:39

Idris Elba would have been good 10 years ago; he’s too old now.

I’m not sure who should get the job, but he definitely has to be British and male.
It’s bollocks, though, to argue that Bond (the character and the whole Bond world) is or should be exactly as Ian Fleming wrote them. If they were, they’d still be set in the 50’s and early 60’s. They now have a contemporary setting, with technology and situations that didn’t exist then. No film Bond has ever resembled Hoagy Carmichael, either. Also - I think - there are no more Ian Fleming books to make films out of, they’re all original screenplays now. There is no reason why Bond can’t be black.
And to whoever said that casting a black actor is only for the sake of being “woke”... words fail me. Such a lot of horrible racists on this thread.

Tavannach · 20/03/2019 00:48

Ruth Wilson.

Andylion · 20/03/2019 05:31

I agree that Idris is too old now, but a few posters have referred to his accent. I'm sure he could do a different accent as he was quite good at the Baltimore accent in The Wire.
