AIBU to think that any coverage of her disappearance is a good thing. I watched two episodes of the Netflix programme and think that if it were to bring her back into the spotlight, then surely it’s worthwhile? I’m on my own in that opinion here in our house.

MN is a parenting website and has policies about the spirit of support for parents

And quite right too, but that surely shouldn't mean that nothing can ever be questioned? (and it is - all the time)

Also, why not just delete posts if someone steps out of line, rather than delete the whole of every single thread?

americandream · 16/03/2019 18:57

Hmmm, I would also go with the theory that a few people are coming out with. (Including the poster 'gabsalot.')

How many episodes in the series? I don't have Netflix and often considered getting it.

Sjofn · 16/03/2019 19:02

I recommend watching the interview with Gerry (YouTube) about the cadaver dogs if you have time to read this before it's deleted.

I hope they ban TellerTuesday4EVA for be disgusting shite they wrote.

Deadbydaylight · 16/03/2019 19:04

Problem is she will likely never be found now. It's been 12 years. At the first hint of media involvement, whoever took her will have no doubt got rid of her sadly.

It kind of sucks though that she is still getting this much media attention, yet the 16 year old boy that has been missing since December last year in Aberdeen has had almost zero media attention.

NameChanger22 · 16/03/2019 19:04

I've watched all 8 episodes. It was fairly neutral, just told the whole story.

TidyDancer · 16/03/2019 19:04

I think it's more likely to be someone connected to the complex or the kids club who was able to note the actions of the group in the evenings.

And yeah, this thread will go soon. The McCanns have shit hot lawyers and MN run scared of them (can't blame them really).

LuvSmallDogs · 16/03/2019 19:05

The theory’s not disgusting, leaving your 3 young children completely unattended while you go out and get pissed with your mates is.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/03/2019 19:06

My dad’s always gone for your theory TellerTuesday. He also says that if it was a council house mum who nipped to the corner shop for fags and her kid “got taken” her life wouldn’t be worth living.

I'm with Storyteller and your dad on this one smalldogs

Professional people, plenty of cash and influence - made a huge difference. Especially as they managed to draw in even more cash and threatened lawsuits against any- and everyone.

How many other children went missing that week? That month? That year?

How many of them did we hear about?

TrixieFranklin · 16/03/2019 19:07

This was another deletion message on another thread. You can talk about it as in the fact that a young girl disappeared but just not speculate on what happened and why.

I must say that Robert Mouret came across quite well in the documentary. The Press gave him a very hard time during the investigation. My husband had always thought MM wandered down to the beach looking for her parents. I don’t, as I think someone would have noticed a little girl on her own. Perhaps they did. With regard to a pedophile taking her, why take her and leave twins? What I found unusual, but I have no idea why it was done, is that MM was made a Ward of Court.

FriendOrFaux · 16/03/2019 19:08

Planning on starting the Netflix series later.
DD has already watched the first 2 episodes and she was aghast that all the parents left their dc.
Also parents playing tennis the next day?

I tend to think it was a tragic accident as a pp has said but none of us know obvs. It's very, very strange though. On the other thread a pp had mentioned all the high up people who turned up to assist. Would everyone get that level of help if it unfortunately happened to them?

NameChanger22 · 16/03/2019 19:08

Why are they so protected?

Dard · 16/03/2019 19:09

I just think heartbreaking that the children had woken up and cried for them on a previous evening yet still left them.
In one of the first episodes a man whose child had played with madelaine said he picked up takeaway from same restaurant and eat on his balcony with family.
They left 3 children every night and have gone on to write books
Chapter 1. Left children
Chapter 2. Lost child
Chapter 3 ......... want sympathy.
Only sympathy with Madelaine

EssentialHummus · 16/03/2019 19:11

I think this is Netflix trying to keep up the "true crime" wave (Making a murderer, Abducted in, etc). But in this case - I'm 4 episodes in - there's no new evidence or info, just a veeeery tedious recounting of the whole thing. It all feels very much like Netflix trying to garner viewership. Any coverage/awareness/spotlight is by the by imo.

AbsentmindedWoman · 16/03/2019 19:11

The poor wee thing, I want to believe she's alive with a nice family somewhere but it's hard to believe that really.

It is fair to say though that no other missing child has had so much coverage - why is that?

nrpmum · 16/03/2019 19:12

Regardless of who, what, when and where I'm just confused as to why we are still funding this.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 16/03/2019 19:12

Why don't they just accept this child has gone - probably never to return -- and concentrate on the two other children. I feel really sorry for them.

youarenotkiddingme · 16/03/2019 19:14

The most interesting bit for me was something I'd never heard or read about before

  • that they'd block booked the tapas bar and the reason was logged on booking.
HisBetterHalf · 16/03/2019 19:14

I don't think her parents harmed her. They made a mistake leaving the children unsupervised but if they had harmed her why would they keep up the publicity with the vitriol they get from some people. Surely they would try let the publicity die down and let it all be forgotten about. And if they caused her harm I dont think any relationship would withstand that. Not after all this time

JustDanceAddict · 16/03/2019 19:17

I still stand by the opinion that leaving their young children was completely out of order. My DCs were around the same age at the time and I was aghast they’d behaved like that, esp when they’d been upset the night before.
I have no idea what happened by my DS who had never heard of MM until he saw me watching today said ‘you never left me alone did you’ aa we used to holiday in a similar way (no I bloody didnt) and ‘why did they take her and not one of the other children?’ Maybe she was easier to get to - who knows. He also thought she might have wandered off. Musings of a 14 yr old!
My Dd is also watching w great interest.
