AIBU to think that any coverage of her disappearance is a good thing. I watched two episodes of the Netflix programme and think that if it were to bring her back into the spotlight, then surely it’s worthwhile? I’m on my own in that opinion here in our house.

BejamNostalgia the dog handler claimed the cadaver dogs had even discovered human graves where people where buried for only a short time, over 40 years ago. Obviously I have no idea how accurate this is.

LadyRochfordsDeletedGusset · 18/03/2019 07:24

*in

If I remember rightly it was captured unintentionally in the holiday photographs but was never found.

MrsFassy · 18/03/2019 07:25

@Tinkerbell456 The front door was locked as that faced out onto a car park, the opposite side of the apartment block. It was the patio doors which had been left unlocked and they weren't in full view of the Tapas Bar.

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/03/2019 07:26

I don't think anyone should be judged for how they react in public, there is no correct way to act under extreme stress and no correct way to grieve.

SouthWestmom · 18/03/2019 07:28

I think the restaurant recording it should have raised alarm bells for the police and a proper investigation into the staff and their associates. It's such an odd, look at this, message to include.

squishee · 18/03/2019 07:28

Hmm, I see my post has been edited Gin

LinoleumBlownapart · 18/03/2019 07:28

Was the front door unlocked? Yes. In case the kids woke and needed anything. It was in full view thee whole time though.

I believe the front door was actually locked and facing the street, on the opposite side of the apartment to the Tapas bar. Do you mean the sliding glass door at the back? That was unlocked. It wasn't in full view, if it had been then they would have seen the alleged kidnapper go in and out and this would have ended with one of them pelting it up the street to save her.
There was a window in the bedroom that was opened, either before or after she went missing and possibly by Kate as her prints were the only ones found on the window. On the morning I remember hearing on breakfast television a friend of relative saying that the kidnapper had entered through the window and taken her. Kate made it very clear that she knew something was wrong because the window was open. Later it emerged that the kidnapper must have used the more obvious open back door, which is not visible from the Tapas bar. If it were, we would presumably have heard about an attempted abduction in 2007 and that would have been the end of it.

FriendOrFaux · 18/03/2019 07:30

ladyrochford love the name btwGrin

I didn't know that. Such a strange case with so many questions and dead ends. Wonder if it'll ever be resolved?
DH was watching it with me last night and even he said people may lie but dogs don't.

acciocat · 18/03/2019 07:36

Some people believe the parents had direct involvement with the disappearance. Some people believe they didn’t, and that everything they’ve said and written, including their theory about stranger abduction, is absolute accurate truth.

Of course, there’s a huge spectrum between those two extremes where I suspect the truth lies.

I don’t believe the whole truth will come out for many years if ever, however much money is thrown at the case. After over 11 years we’re not a single shred of admissible evidence closer.

user1457017537 · 18/03/2019 07:37

I watched the documentary linked by on here by Rich.TV. Worth watching so many discrepancies and changes in statements from the very beginning.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 18/03/2019 07:40

The traces don’t last for that long, they’re cleaned up and dispersed

Not sure that is correct for cadaverine. Google the case of Jeanette Zapata where the same dogs were involved and the "evidence" they provided was initially dismissed and subsequently proved to be correct - many years after the victim was killed.

RedHelenB · 18/03/2019 07:44

Bearing in mind that the restaurant entry is a translation and may more be in Portuguese they don't dine with the children.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 18/03/2019 07:58

squishee. What do you mean, your post has been edited? What was added/removed?

Piglet89 · 18/03/2019 07:59

I have watched episode one so far. I think it’s well put together and contains some interesting chronolical fact patterns.

The thing that strikes me immediately is the fact that the Portuguese police (both local and the National serious crime squad) were not on scene quickly enough. I think there was some question about whether the hotel staff alerted them quickly enough; think they had to be asked to contact them a second time when they never arrived after the first call?

Anyway, whatever the real cause of the delay, the result was that the apartment and any valuable forensic evidence was hugely compromised with many people having tramped through it to search. And then, the police’s processes for subsequently securing the apartment to avoid the scene being further compromised were also inadequate.

I seem to remember similar criticism of poor and slapdash Italian police processes in connection with forensics gathering and securing the scene of Kercher’s murder.

These failings in process make it extremely difficult to gather incontrovertible evidence which might actually have led to a proper lead. And, obviously, the so-called “golden hour” was indeed lost. I reckon the local police probably thought she would turn up and, in the early hours, probably didn’t take it seriously enough.

BejamNostalgia · 18/03/2019 08:06

What I’d be really interested in is the reason why they have apparently been exonerated. The head of the PJ was interviewed on another documentary a while ago and he said they weren’t suspects but then later that month a court ruled that the shelving of the case did not amount to an exoneration.

I’m curious to know the head of the PJ’s thinking on this. It would probably make the McCann’s life easier if it was out in the open too.

Frequency · 18/03/2019 08:14

DH was watching it with me last night and even he said people may lie but dogs don't

Dogs are master body language readers. They often pick up on the handlers body language/tension in the room and react to that. If the first dog reacted to a certain spot the handler's body language will show it when the next dog comes in. That's why dogs aren't always reliable. Yeah, they can be helpful but a positive reaction with no blood, body or DNA found as a result means nothing.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/03/2019 08:15

I think under Portuguese law they can’t be exonerated until someone else is convicted, neither can Murat.

The public prosecutor essentially eliminated them after reviewing the files but I don’t think he can actually exonerate them.

Mississippilessly · 18/03/2019 08:24

I'm a few episodes in.
The only person I find convincing is the lady who says she saw her at the petrol station. Why police even bothered to put up blocks and checks so late after the abduction is beyond me. If you were going to traffic someone you would go as quickly as possible.

However I also think that if it was MM then chances are MM is still alive and living a pretty hideous existence, with probably no clue who she is.
The whole thing is just awful. I'm not sure I am comfortable with the documentary - I worry the line between info and entertainment is being quite blurred.

QueenofmyPrinces · 18/03/2019 08:27

However I also think that if it was MM then chances are MM is still alive and living a pretty hideous existence, with probably no clue who she is.

I find this chilling and upsetting. Part of me often wonders if her losing her life would be preferable to the above alternative. I can’t bear the thought of a child being trapped in a life of misery, neglect and abuse of who knows what sort Sad

NorthernRunner · 18/03/2019 08:34

Mississippilessly

I think you are right and the lines have been blurred but I’m not sure if there is a way to avoid this. It’s such a well known public case (which is what Kate and Gerry wanted) that still has no conclusion. People are going to come up with their own conspiracy theories regardless of whether documentaries are made. There are plenty of amateur videos on YouTube to search out, (if you are that way inclined) that aren’t based on facts, it’s all rubbish speculation. At least this documentary is factual.

Mississippilessly · 18/03/2019 08:43

Northern that's very true.

QueenofmyPrinces I'm sorry if you thought I was being cold hearted. I was actually disappointed that I believed her. Awful as it is I would far rather believe that she died quickly and was buried in the ocean.

The whole thing is unbearable. I thought to myself that I wonder if Kate ever thought that if it wasnt for the twins she would end it herself. But then there is that small part of you that must cling to the hope that she will be found.

They made a massive massive error of judgement- repeatedly. I do think there are inconsistencies in their story. But by God are they paying for anything they did wrong.

UrsulaPandress · 18/03/2019 08:50

I'm only up to episode 6 but dear god the millionaire and his son are a right pair. Particularly the son.

QueenofmyPrinces · 18/03/2019 08:51

mississipilessly - I didn’t think you were being cold hearted, don’t worry. I think you were just being truthful and I agree with you, it’s kist a horrible thought. Like I said, I think her potentially having been killed is preferable to the alternatives...

sweetcheeksmahoaney · 18/03/2019 08:55

OP you can't mention MM on mumsnet. Ever.

Why not???

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 18/03/2019 08:59

Of course we can mention MM. Those who claim otherwise are usually those who want to be able to post defamatory and speculative shit and get away with it.
