Netflix Madeleine McCann

AIBU to think that any coverage of her disappearance is a good thing. I watched two episodes of the Netflix programme and think that if it were to bring her back into the spotlight, then surely it’s worthwhile? I’m on my own in that opinion here in our house.

I don’t think any of us can judge whether someone else has empathy actually.

flitwit99 · 17/03/2019 14:53

I'm just on episode 2 and so far it's been almost entirely about Robert Murat. So not massively interesting. Also half of it is in Portuguese so I have to keep looking up from my knitting to follow what's going on. I can't believe they can fill 8 hours with this.

I do not blame the parents for leaving her alone. They judged it was safe. I don't for a minute believe they thought it wasn't safe but left their children anyway. Their judgement was wrong in this case. Sometimes my judgement is wrong.

I wish they could have an answer.

I judge them more for the ongoing media manipulation and subsequent behaviour than for leaving their kids alone. Yes it was poor judgement but as others have said, all parents make risk assessments and sometimes get it wrong.

To maintain for years and years that only one possible theory is correct and to keep a massive PR machine whirring to do that, despite having no firm evidence base for that theory- well, that takes more than a moment’s poor judgement.

itwaseverthus · 17/03/2019 14:58

acciocat you may have empathy for them, but the poster I directed that comment at certainly hasn’t and has admitted as much herself. Where? Where have I admitted as much?

MilkieBar · 17/03/2019 14:59

I have just watched episode 3 and the moments where the sniffer dog barked to alert it had detected the blood and corpse scent in the apartment and the car made my blood run cold.

Friends in high places.

Exactly.

I have a lot of empathy for a lot of Madeleine McCann's family, not all of them granted but the majority. Kate McCann looks like a broken soul and it's awful to see. Most of my sorrow is for the little girl of course. But I don't feel the need to state the bleeding obvious, because frankly what does it change? I have serious doubts about aspects of the case from the reported facts because, as I keep referencing, the Martin Smith sightings was actively lied as being retracted by the BBC.

I don't care if you judge me sanctimonious GreatDuckCookery because your opinion of me matters nought. But you are judging all the way through this thread and are no better than anyone else for it.

GirlcalledJack · 17/03/2019 15:04

I understand the McCanns didn’t want the series to air but now it has and it’s clear it isn’t all about how guilty they are have the McCanns said anything else about the series?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 17/03/2019 15:04

So you do feel for them then? You aren’t judging them?

acciocat · 17/03/2019 15:07

Why do you think judgement and empathy are mutually exclusive GreatDuckCookery?

I feel empathy for the McCanns because they are suffering the agony of a missing child.

Do I judge them? Hell yes, for their dogged insistence that we should all accept the one theory that they want us to believe.

itwaseverthus · 17/03/2019 15:09

So you do feel for them then? You aren’t judging them? I feel huge sympathy for Kate McCann, her parents, Madeleine, Madeleine's siblings. Huge! And that's even although I judge their actions in leaving those kids as very remiss. So I can feel sympathy and judge their behaviour.

Now where did I admit earlier to having no empathy? Back up your claim GreatDuckCookery

Thanks acciocat . It's good to know I'm not a freak for having more than one emotion at a time and not being alone in that Smile

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 17/03/2019 15:15

Your stance on this thread is not one of empathy to the McCanns imo. Which you obviously disagree with but that’s my opinion.

Regarding not crying enough in public.... there’s one scene where Kate is issuing an appeal for information. She’s incredibly calm and emotionless but as soon as they cut the take she’s breaks down. It’s very difficult to watch, she looks like a shell of a woman. Gerry definitely approaches things like he’s at work. I imagine he’s been trained to compartmentalise his feelings and reactions as he would a surgeon and uses it as a coping mechanism in his personal life.
