To ask what the best money you ever spent was?

I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

Our fridge. I bought it in 1986 when I had my first flat on my own. (This was 3 years before I met DH.) Still got it! Same one. It cost £99. (Was quite a lot then, maybe £250 in today's money!) but well worth the dosh when it lasts 33 years. Smile

Gorgeous cat @maidenmothercrone Is she a russian blue? Smile

£55 on a Sherpa blanket
Honestly it makes me so happy, I am stupidly attached to it and have been for months

Materialistic: Dyson airwrap (saves me so, so much time on blow drying and styling. I look much more "put together" every day now and however petty that sounds, it improves my confidence and assertiveness because I know I don't look a state).

Emotional: all the money I spend visiting DP. We are long distance and physically seeing each other is worth every penny.

ILoveBray · 09/03/2019 22:49

Hersheys

You know you've probably just jinxed your straighteners! @ILoveBray**

Grin I know! TBF after 15 years I think they've earned a rest!

@Crackers1428 I'd love to know what they advised!

nutellalove · 09/03/2019 23:20

GHD too. Mine lasted 14 years. Just bought a new one last year when the previous pair died as I thought that was pretty good going

honeylulu · 09/03/2019 23:21

Blood plasma transfusion after multiple miscarriages and a stillbirth - and having at last been diagnosed with high natural killer cells. Finally got my lovely longed for baby (she's 5 in a few weeks).

Also laser eye surgery. Absolutely life changing.

SusieQ5604 · 09/03/2019 23:28

What is GHD? I looked all over MN & couldn't find help with abbreviations

Bunnylady53 · 09/03/2019 23:29

There are lots of things over the years but one of the best things I ever spent money on was our gorgeous bunnies. I never expected to love them so much & they have really brought us closer as a family.

Bacardi101 · 09/03/2019 23:35

Doesn’t sound anything special but a £10 fluffy blanket from Primark! I’m ill a lot of the time and gives me comfort when I’m house bound on the sofa! It’s lovely and washes like a dream!

My daughters bunk beds! Never thought I’d be able to have children and I get a bit misty eyed whenever I go into their rooms and hear them snoring away always sharing one of the beds!

FaithInfinity · 09/03/2019 23:43

SusieQ it’s a brand, GHD is short for Good Hair Day! They were the ultimate straighteners in the 00s. Mine must be 8 years old. I’ve replaced the plug on them but otherwise still going..

Couple of things my parents paid for - £3k on braces and false teeth (cap and crown). I had awful, wonky teeth, I hated them! I had a dental op, two years of braces and head gear, but it was so worth it! Also paying for the assessment to diagnose my dyslexia at uni. Finally at 21 I had an answer as to why I’d struggled academically all my life!

A funny one- about £7 on a crochet kit in Lidl! I’d thought about trying to crochet but didn’t know where to start. This had a kit and basic instructions. I made the hat and found a new passion that gives me so much joy! Smile

rosenylund · 10/03/2019 00:10

The Kebabacue , hands down.

StillMedusa · 10/03/2019 00:34

My first Maine Coon cat, Morpheus. Without a doubt, my soulmate, love of my life (sorry DH). 12 years of total love. My kids sobbed into his fur during their teen heartaches, he just wrapped his huge paws round our necks and loved us.
I have had many pets and will doubtless have more, but he cost me £350 and was my daemon.

Other than that my GHDs are 15 years old and still going strong!

SlangBack · 10/03/2019 00:44

Dishwasher.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/03/2019 00:53

Not the best thing ever, but I was really happy yesterday, I bought a new light bulb for my cooker ! I can now see in the oven again, and only £1.50 for two !
Then I felt my life must be quite shite if that made me happy Grin

SynchroSwimmer · 10/03/2019 01:02

Panasonic microwave, first generation as they came on the market, purchased 1983....cost a whole month’s wages at the time, just replaced, bit only because it no longer fits the kitchen.

Laser corrective eye surgery - every shadow in the sea when I am snorkelling and swimming is now no longer “a shark”...just seaweed 😀
