I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

@RippleEffects I'm so glad you finally got your dog.

Mine is probably my gym membership. It's not very fancy but the classes are amazing and it has a crèche which kept me sane when I had 2 under 2

Lightweight adjustable foldable book rests.

£10 each and have revolutionised my life - I can study/work so much more easily now. I gave them to DC for school and university and DD at university reports that all her friends now have them. They should be considered standard kit for all students.

Another one to say my dog - couldn't give her anymore of my heart!

Also saw a PP saying the flu jab and yes! Aside from a sore throat once or twice I was illness free this winter compared to bedridden with the flu last year. Similarly my chicken pox jab, no more worrying about catching it as an adult.

My Toms, had them about 6 years which you wouldn't expect from shoes of that style and my gosh they're the comfiest shoes ever, if only it was warm and dry enough to wear them every day

My wood heater. About $4000 twenty years ago. Changed my house completely. There's no gas here and so no normal central heating.

Cahu58 · 09/03/2019 21:58

My garden makeover-went from being an over planted dark cave like space to an open lawn with a cute shed that had been hidden behind huge conifers. Transformed the back of my house as I wouldn't open the blinds before it was done. Best money ever spent on my house,

LEDadjacent · 09/03/2019 22:00

Kindle Paperwhite. I use it for hours every day. I even have a spare.

KatharinaRosalie · 09/03/2019 22:01

Must be the sports club membership, many years ago. I went from being the least fit person ever, unable to run 100 yards, to fitness instructor. I can kick the arses of people half my age and feel fabulous.

Travelling. Felt very indulgent at the time, well sometimes, I did rough it a lot too, to be able to stay away for a long time. Now I look back and am so glad and grateful I did it. One of the few times I've listened to myself and had the balls to do something that felt scary at the time.

Apart from my 2 fabulous cats, my handmade in frame kitchen. Still looks new 12 years later.

Both cats and kitchen give daily joy.

My dog stupidly expensive crossbreed but an anti allergy breed, my kids have asthma and we'd never be able to have a normal dog, he's all of our best friend and has brought so much to us all xx

Without a doubt thd money I spent on having IVF treatment to have my first DC. It ended the prolonged period of misery where I thought I would never be able to have children of my own and experience what it’s like to bring a new life in the world and be a mum and watch my DH become a dad. He’s a great dad and I always knew he would be. I found the possibility of him never fulfilling that role heartbreaking to be honest.

I've got a few:
New double oven I bought on moving into my unit
RED coffee machine (red is my favourite colour Smile)
My westie and the three months off work I took when I got him
Painting inside of my unit, including ceilings, while on puppy leave - look at it every day and makes me so happy
Replacing the hideous grey carpet

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/03/2019 22:30

The best male ive ever had in my life
My divorce and subsequent cash buy of my lovely ground floor flat

tararabumdeay · 09/03/2019 22:36

£140 on a 1968 Morris Minor in 1982 which lasted four years of amazing miles, London scene, friends, fun, learning and festivals. Then I met my husband - worst 7/6 ever.

magimedi · 09/03/2019 22:38

£26 on a beautiful bird bath.

I'd looked for the right one for ages & it appeared in the garden centre half a mile from my house.

The sparrows, starlings, blackbirds, magpies, goldfinches, wrens, thrushes & sometimes even long tailed tits love it as much as I do.

In terms of pleasure per £ this is the winner of my lie - and I'm an old gimmer!

AlpacaLypse · 09/03/2019 22:39

Haven't read full thread. Nitty Gritty Louse Comb was the single best £9.99. Hovag mattress from Ikea was the best £250. And £2.49 for a box of sheer chocolate yumminess of Belgian Chocolate Seashells from Lidl has been the utter making of my Saturday night mmmmmm.
