I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

My sloggi tai high leg knickers! Expensive at £26 a pm of 3 but they are most comfortable, wash lovely and last a very long time.

Thisisnotadrill · 10/03/2019 18:58

£50 every 6 months to get my oven professionally cleaned Blush

BreevandercampLGJ · 10/03/2019 19:00

This is a lovely thread.

Asked DH what the best money we ever spent was, thinking he would say really pushing ourselves to get his house...

He pointed at my engagement ring and said, that, because after that everything fell into place.

He is not given to big speeches, indeed I love you is met with ditto, so pardon me whilst I lie down for a bit... Grin

A doona car seat. Wheels pop out. Game changer! Worst money I ever spent was £8k on laser eye surgery. I had to have the top guy do it and 4yrs later I needed glasses again

My circe helios tandem. I used to commute on it and it meant I got some exercise with the children at work (I was a nanny) instead of driving everywhere, I rode on the back when I was pregnant and now I ride it with my 5 year old. It was the best money I spent again when I had a frame transplant to e-assist last year. It means we don't need a second car when my husband is working elsewhere and it is brilliant fun. I think the cost works out at about 50p a mile now and it is still dropping. When my son is old enough to be confident on his own bike on the roads, I will still have it as a cargo bike. It's brilliant.

Any holiday we've taken.

Either pre or since being parents.

We spend too much on holidays. But it's just the best way to enjoy life/the world/each other and experience new things.

Linzbe · 10/03/2019 19:13

My GHDs, I'd had them almost 20 years before they died (I think I dropped them too much!)

My Babylis Curl Secret - best hair appliance ever!

haven’t read full thread, and I’m sure it’s been said, my divorce was best money I’ve ever spent.

Postmanbear · 10/03/2019 19:21

Driclor anti sweat liquid was £6 and has changed my life. I used to have a lot of underarm sweat and as a teacher it was very embarrassing. I used to change tops half way through the day. I bought one bottle and now never sweat from my underarms. I can wear anything I want. Literally life changing.

The best house purchase was the Miele hoover, still going strong 9 years later and we have a dog and have abused it with lots of DIY.

MrsTommyShelby · 10/03/2019 19:25

Easterbunnyiscomingsoon, I'm due to get braces and I'm anxious about other people's reactions to yours. I haven't even told anyone yet as I'm really quite embarrassed. My teeth have been a source of embarrassment my entire life and I need to get them sorted.

Lilybetsey · 10/03/2019 19:30

My dog, the dishwasher, my house ...

PeterPeterson · 10/03/2019 19:36

I have a few, the ££££’s that we spent to go on a holiday of a lifetime last year to the Caribbean and New York, we put off buying a house for a year just so we could afford to go but I actually still cry when I think about it because we had such an amazing time.
£10 that I spent on some crochet hooks and a ball of wool, I know have a hobby that can instantly calm me when I’m having a shitty day!
£250 on microblading last year. I finally feel confident going out without make up on because my brows now frame my face!

Sparkerparker · 10/03/2019 19:37

If it’s for longevity, a Nike top I bought when I was around 21. I’m 44 and it still looks new and I wear it loads. It was £30 at the time, which 20 odd years ago was expensive, but a good investment - together with my doc martins which are still going, bought at the same time. Other than that? I bought a brand new car about a year ago and the hassle free motoring is marvellous. Here’s to many more of those. The best bargain I’ve had though was a brand new (with tags) Nike trainers which someone had been given as a gift from USA, but were too small for them (and you can’t really return them to the US), but weren’t available here. I checked the web and they were $150 to buy and I got them off eBay for 99p.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 10/03/2019 19:43

An off-street parking space adjacent to our house. We’d been living there for about 8 years, doing battle at least 4 times a day with the lack of on-street parking. It cost a lot of money but it changed my life. It changed how much I liked my home and it made it easy to sell as it was in a very desirable location except that everyone knows that the parking is a problem.

GivemeGinandTonic · 10/03/2019 19:48

You only die with your memories - so any I’ve made are always the wisest investment. Good use of syscanner when I was a low earner was my greatest friend.
On myself - getting my colours done, cannot recommend it enough! Saved me w fortune in money and time

Longpinknails · 10/03/2019 19:49

Nespresso machine ( 2 years ago) love my coffee
& Sony wireless headphones ( ones that fit round the neck) , they didn’t cost the earth, but makes my journey by train to work more pleasurable and I don’t have to worry about a lead to my phone. My travel card by rail. I buy 2 monthly at a time...it saves me having to queue every morning for my ticket. I’m part time at work and it doesn’t save me anything at all financially, but what it does save me, is time. Amazon Alexa Smile we have them in various rooms and they make our lives a little easier. Never realised, until we got one.

Chickoletta · 10/03/2019 20:00

Also my cleaner.

In terms of objects, definitely my Toggi leather waterproof country boots which I bought for £75 (which I couldn't afford at the time) 2 years ago. They are the comfiest boots I'evwr worn and I just have walked hundreds and hundreds of miles in them.

Rainsunshine · 10/03/2019 20:01

My Henry hoover - 15 years old and still going!

StrumpersPlunkett · 10/03/2019 20:10

An ovulation test. Worked first time after a lot of trying without

StarlightIntheNight · 10/03/2019 20:12

The most recent purchase, our puppy. She is almost a year, and we got her last summer. She was quite expensive, but money well spent. She brings everyone in the family so much joy and happiness. She has a funny personality and so nice to cuddle.

MrsTommyShelby · 10/03/2019 20:50

Easterbunny, thanks for replying! My partner is really supportive. Just haven't told my friends about it yet. Also having jaw realignment surgery at some point. Liquid diet for 3 months, will definitely be good for weight loss!
