To ask what the best money you ever spent was?

I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

£25 on an alpaca trek experience. The alpacas were gorgeous, funny and so wonderful to be with - they made my year ☺️

Annewilko4 · 10/03/2019 20:54

My divorce! My GHDs have more than paid their way too.

Littlechocola · 10/03/2019 20:56

Driving lessons and university which then helped me believe in my self and get a divorce. My life now is very different....
It led to the best money spent... marriage to a wonderful man!

TheLastNigel · 10/03/2019 21:02

£100 if n a second hand dishwasher. Never had one before, thought they were a waste of time. Life changing.

TheLastNigel · 10/03/2019 21:02

Also counselling.

CircleofWillis · 10/03/2019 21:09

Driving lessons for me too. I come from a family background where the men all drive but none of the women do. It has given me a physical and mental freedom that my grandmother, mother and aunts have never had.

OhTheRoses · 10/03/2019 21:11

Yes, on the counselling note, and how could I have forgotten.

DD's private psychiatrist when CAMHS decided a depressed, anxious teen who was self harming by cutting and od's didn't meet their thresholds.

It took £6000 but dd got a diagnosis, ADD, and once medicated began to recover. Missed a year of 6th form and recovered more on a gap year. Had she been at a state school she wouldn't have been able to transfer to another 6th form. Would have had to go into FE.

jocktamsonsbairn · 10/03/2019 21:42

Successful IVF treatment which cost loads but was more than worth it! Also the money spent on a really good solicitor during my divorce who saved me and my dc from financial and emotional ruin.

BringmeGin · 10/03/2019 21:49

Oh yes, I second a PP on the Fitflop boots, I don't wear anything else except their flip flops in summer! Soo comfy ❤️

fitflopqueen · 10/03/2019 21:54

Dog, best spend ever, 3 years on know more country paths around us and walk far more than in the previous 40 years.
Stanley - oil fired range, now 20 years old and still best item we bought when doing our house.

Shakirawannabe · 10/03/2019 22:00

My wedding day make up artist, she was extremely expensive but worth every penny.
I cried the whole way through the ceremony but you would never know Wink

shonashmoo · 10/03/2019 22:01

I didn't buy it but my Mum bought a slow cooker when we were young and she passed it on to me and I use it weekly with my own family now... I'm almost 40! It still works fantastically.

Ragnarthe · 10/03/2019 22:03

My Ray Bans

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 10/03/2019 22:29

Making additional voluntary contributions to my pension so I could retire early. This has meant I spend more time with my adult DC and the GC AND I buy my gorgeous convertible BMW. All of the above has made me very happy. What a great thread!

GingerLiberalFeminist · 10/03/2019 23:11

Shake n Vac. Old school I know but nothing compares to the glorious homely smell in the house after a good hoover.

My Henry hoover (linked of course!)

In 1999 my dad bought me a stereo system which I still use every day

DAB radio and Jack lead to attach to said stereo

And my divorce 😉😂

@Crackers1428

Out of interest, what did the sleep consultant say was the magic solution?

millythepink · 10/03/2019 23:17

Thought of a few more:

My Shu Umera eyelash curlers, they cost £25 but work miracles every day.

Lots of ready prepped fresh fruit, really expensive but means I eat loads of fruit that I wouldn't bother to do otherwise.

A cheap pair of black faux suede ankle boots from Newlook, they were cheap as chips but look really stylish and have been admired by so many people.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 10/03/2019 23:18

My dogs

One we still have with us. She will be 16 in October.

The other died in 2014 and I was heartbroken and still am.

They are my little mates

Seren85 · 11/03/2019 00:38

Every penny I've spent going to gigs/concerts/festivals. Realistically I could have travelled the world or bought a house so much sooner but live music is my absolute love and I'll never regret any of those experiences. Well, maybe the odd crap support band and one Sunday morning at Download.

Hotterthanahotthing · 11/03/2019 00:47

IVF and the solicitor who helped me divorce 13 years later.

Nonameslob · 11/03/2019 00:58

Our dog, she rescued us, not the other way round.
I also spent £100 on my ghd's and they are still going 16+ years later.

ViolaD77 · 11/03/2019 01:09

Dyson vacuum Robot.... I literally don't need to hoover, everWink

Fabulousdahlink · 11/03/2019 06:24

£550 on my divorce application. After 25 years of nailing ex out financially, ending my professional career and loosing my home to support him...finally no longer legally responsible for his debt. Such a wonderful feeling.

Happilyacceptingcookies · 11/03/2019 06:41

New mattress, back pain suddenly disappeared.

Blackout blinds - so DD sleeps long enough for me to enjoy my comfortable sleep on said mattress.

Netflix

Yogafanatic · 11/03/2019 06:46
