To ask what the best money you ever spent was?

I was using my hair straighteners today, and realised that it's been 15 years since I purchased them. They are GHDs and I bought them in 2004. Used almost daily and they were £100. At the time I thought this was quite expensive. But working out cost per usage it's pretty amazing! They're still going strong.

What was the best money you ever spent on something and why?

I asked a friend, and she said it was the registration fee on a dating site, as she is now married with 2 children Smile

In the kitchen: Kitchen Aid (around 18 years old and still going strong) & Phillips Airfryer.
Around the house: Dyson cordless hoover, Alexa, Spotify & Sonos, super comfy beds, solid oak ridiculously heavy dining room table.
Personally: my beautiful German Shepard dog who has become a family member.

HappydaysArehere · 10/03/2019 13:57

My iPad. It took me into the world of technology which has helped me no end.

NunoGoncalves · 10/03/2019 13:57

A really cheap house so that I could be mortgage-free at a young age. Made day-to-day life so much easier.

DesdemonasHandkerchief · 10/03/2019 13:59

Good one Happydays I'd be lost without my iPad!

My house. We moved 18 months ago to a house that as cheesy as it sounds, brings DH and me a profound sense of joy every day. I just think it’s so beautiful and we are right next to a small church which I can see through the window from my bed. It has such a lovely feeling to it.

I lost my parents very young, which (trying to summarise very briefly) led to many difficulties, emotional, financial, practical, and in terms of a loss of sense of belonging.

DH and I have been married 25 years this month and I soon turn 50 and although I have been happy enough till now, only now do I really feel such a feeling of belonging and contentment.

Our young adult dcs are still at home with us, we are all close and this house, which has such a sense of warmth and happiness, has given all of us, but particularly me and Dh such an incredibly deep sense of contentment and joy. I feel thankful for it every day.

And my six silly cats 😀

Driving lessons. I was in my 30s and knew that if I was going to learn, it had to be now... I somehow scraped the money together (asking for birthday and Christmas presents to be in the form of money for a lesson) and actually managed to pass first time..! Freedom. Grin

Thedarklady · 10/03/2019 14:28

PixieBob28 that's an amazing story, where did you go?

Al2O3 · 10/03/2019 14:30

Some beans in a jar from an old lady at the market yesterday morning.

MaidenMotherCrone · 10/03/2019 14:31

Madam cat is a blue Oriental (basically a Siamese without points).

Hiddenaspie1973 · 10/03/2019 14:32

My cat. £45 from a rescue.
She's beautiful and lovely. When life is shit and I'm pissed off with everyone, there she is. I wish she could live forever.

BroomstickOfLove · 10/03/2019 14:35

My house (and extending it).

Independent midwives for DC2.

My Miele vacuum cleaner.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 10/03/2019 14:54

YesQueen Your lovely cat made me chuckle!

Mine is our bathroom. We had it done four years ago but it pleases me as much today as it did then. I should probably say the kitchen we had done at the same time which cost ten times the bathroom but the bathroom pleases me more.

Also all the amazing holidays I've had with DH.

MotherOfDragonite · 10/03/2019 15:52

A really good mattress -- I appreciate it every night.

A second-hand diamond and sapphire ring that I wear every day. I thought it was unlikely that anyone would ever buy me anything like that, and I really wanted one! I feel like a strong and independent woman when I look at it.

A heated airer dryer (thanks for the recommendation, Mumsnet!)

An insulated tumbler by Klean Kanteen, it's stainless steel and lovely for keeping my tea warm as I never seem to be able to get to it in time since having kids...

EntirelyAnonymised · 10/03/2019 16:31

Oh yes to Lumea. Lumea & the sonicare. Philips have my personal grooming £

Auramigraine · 10/03/2019 16:49

My dishwasher and my heat pump tumble dryer (could never use a dryer before these, was too scared of eye watering electric bills!) Costs less than £3 a month to run it three times a week!

For baby
Perfect prep machine
jumperoo (bought second hand for £27, gave us months and months of entertainment for our DC, then sold it for £30!!)

BBTHREE76 · 10/03/2019 17:05

I wish I could add something original but I can’t...

  1. My cat - £50 from a rescue centre - I adore him and he adores me
  2. Driving lessons - I was 32 when I passed and I can’t believe how many hours I had wasted waiting for public transport and how I had restricted myself.
  3. Dishwasher - I was always extremely slow at washing up and it was my most hated job. I genuinely couldn’t be without it now
Bubba1234 · 10/03/2019 17:08

Similar to all
My orthotics
Ghds
Cordless Dyson I love it so much

Annabk · 10/03/2019 17:12

My education and training courses.

Omgineedanamechange · 10/03/2019 17:18

Driving lessons for me too. Passed age 38 and really regret not sticking at it when I was younger.

MerryTwinkletoes · 10/03/2019 17:22

£2k on laser eye treatment. Amazing not to have to wear contacts and I fee so smug every time I see someone with fogged up glasses!

Sara107 · 10/03/2019 17:29

My expensive memory foam mattress. No idea a new mattress could change my life. Went shopping saying ‘definitely not memory foam’ but after an afternoon lying on a bed in the Tempur shop that’s what we got. It cost a months salary. My sore hip and knee which I’ve been getting treatment for for years disappeared almost overnight!

graysquirrel · 10/03/2019 17:30

Every penny of my divorce settlement!

smallereveryday · 10/03/2019 17:42

Bariatric surgery. NHS but 2 hrs from home and lots of appointments before hand. So quite a cost in time and petrol.
Best thing I ever did. 4 stone down. No longer diabetic. No high blood pressure and I can walk for miles and miles.

spiderlight · 10/03/2019 17:43

The adoption fee for our dog - love, laughter and a wiggly bum, wrapped in velvet and a bargain at £165.

Uptheshard · 10/03/2019 17:43

My wonderful fitted wardrobe and a shabby chic kitchen. Oh and a surprise trip to Mauritius for mum !
