To ask for what to feed unwanted guests?

We have a couple coming over on Sunday for lunch.

I don't want either of them here. Nor does DH.

But it's unavoidable. So it's happening. So no "just don't have them" comments please as that's a whole other drama.

Anyway. In the past (when we enjoyed their company) I've cooked various things, roasts, lasagne, buffet type bread/cheese/salad etc.

Well. They're all too much effort for me to go to for them now. Jacket potatoes maybe.

What's the easiest group meal I can throw out. That will feed us, but not make the kitchen and loads of crockery dirty please?

Maybe a big bowl of pasta and a salad?

How awful for you OP. They are you PIL So you cant just tell them to do one! I would do some kind of one pot dish like a pasta bake. Hopefully you should only end up with a couple of pots/pans to chuck in the dishwasher after. I’ve been in the a similar situation with my ex PILs. I really resented having them round and used to find an excuse to disappear after a very short time. Good luck!

Bochym · 11/03/2019 10:45

I really like that meal but most don't so very good gamble

ralfeesmum · 11/03/2019 10:52

A tube of Pringles each......and NO pudding!

Bochym · 11/03/2019 10:55

AIBU to be put out by this card I was sent on my 68th Birthday which was signed by my Son, his wife and my 2 & 4 year old grandchildren (on their behalf of course)

To ask for what to feed unwanted guests?
MarvinMarvinson · 11/03/2019 10:57

You probably need to start your own thread bochym but I'd find that hilarious.

Bochym · 11/03/2019 10:58

Sorry new to posting and thought I was posting not replying. Can't delete it unfortunately but will repost elsewhere when I find out how. Apologies

Bochym · 11/03/2019 10:59

Thanks but not appropriate for birthdays or am I being over-sensitive?

M4J4 · 11/03/2019 11:09

@Bochym

I would not send that card to my mum, who is 68! Shock

That would devastate her.

Maybe we can suggest some cards to send to your son his birthday?

Bochym · 11/03/2019 11:11

No , no wars 🤔

MarvinMarvinson · 11/03/2019 11:12

No need to apologise just thought you'd get better/more posts on your own thread.

OffToBedhampton · 11/03/2019 11:17

@Bochym please don't hijack OP"s thread, you need to start your own thread.

If you click 3 dots at top or bottom of each of your comments you can report yourself and ask Mumsnet HQ to delete each one as you'd posted in here by mistake.

Then you go to Talk, select topic you want to post in (AIBU is under Other Stuff), click on that and then select Add Thread. Hope that helps.

BaronessBomburst · 11/03/2019 11:18

At least your son bought the card himself Bochym.
Or was it DIL? Shock
I think it's hilarious, but it's not really mum-suitable.

Guiltypleasures001 · 11/03/2019 11:41

I bought that cat card from our cat to my dh he loved it Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/03/2019 15:16

Supermarket own brand tomato soup, with Pom Bears floating on top.

Actually - that would have gone down well with DCs when they were little.

They'd probably have called it a Bowl of Bloody Bears, and giggled 'cos they were "swearing" and argued that I couldn't tell them off, because "it looks like blood and there's bears in it, so they're all bloody" etc etc etc

Thank God they're big now.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/03/2019 15:18

That takes me back PentreBachCymraeg

Sainsburys do some horrible "box meals" which I have to buy for my OAP father every week. He likes them, but 70 years of smoking has eradicated his taste buds. You can get shepherd's pie, cottage pie, lasagne, bangers & mash, each one served up in an attractive oblong plastic box. Pierce the cling film! Five minutes in the microwave!
I'm not suggesting you leave them in the box. That would be insulting. Decant each one onto a plate & spread it out a bit with a fork to give it that home-cooked appearance.

PickAChew · 11/03/2019 15:51

The bangers and mash are actually quite palatable, though I don't care to think what's in the sausages.

Jux · 11/03/2019 15:54

How wonderful to read a thread where the op is so well-adjusted and keeps her head screwed on

Well done, @MaryPoppins, you actually are practically perfect in every way! Grin

Nevergotobedfangry · 11/03/2019 15:58

Ready meal - family size veg lasagne or canneloni

cms1972 · 11/03/2019 16:04

Sorry, I posted my post before reading that you wanted something quick and easy as opposed to something cheap & unpleasant.
So here's another suggestion; this is what I would do.

Buy a sachet of Colman's beef casserole mix. All you've got to do is brown some ready-cubed braising steak with a couple of sliced onions in a big casserole with a lid. Add some sliced carrots, mix the sachet with water & pour it in. Stir it, lid on and stick it in the oven for 2 hours while you go off and do something else.
Apart from chopping the onions & carrots it's not much bother & am I being ageist to think that older generations like this sort of meat-and-two-veg comfort food? Serve with a nice red wine (to show you've made an effort... though they'll never know your casserole was made with a mix if you forensically dispose of the sachet) - and a crusty white bloomer.
