To be shocked BREXIT is going to affect cancer treatment?

Just listening to the BBC radio news and they were interviewing an oncologist who said that because of worries about getting hold of enough isotopes straight after BREXIT, Drs have been advised by the Government to book less people into their clinics for both diagnosis and treatment.
This will mean longer waits for diagnosis and treatment from some patients. I was taken aback that such a serious medical issue is being affected.

I'm disgusted but not surprised.

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/03/2019 07:52

The vast majority of the drugs and radio isotopes come from Europe.

forestafantastica · 06/03/2019 07:53

Well, of course, it's going to be affected. Potential medication shortages have been being discussed for ages. I'm moderately surprised that this is something that you've only just noticed now.

IceRebel · 06/03/2019 07:53

I think it's just the tip of a very large iceberg. I'm sure there will be many other areas that are affected, which we will have no idea about until it's too late. Sad

marvellousnightforamooncup · 06/03/2019 07:54

Everything is going to be affected in some way.

Scottishgirl85 · 06/03/2019 07:54

Brexit will sadly affect a lot of these type of things. I work in Pharma and access to medicines will be slower with the UK missing out on first access to new treatments (pharma prioritizes US and EU first). My husband is a cancer research scientist and a lot of funding for research comes from the EU. Brexit from a medical perspective is potentially a disaster. Sadly these things were not explained to the public at the time of the vote.

SeventyNineBottlesOfWine · 06/03/2019 07:55

I'm saddened, but not shocked. As Foresta says, this has been discussed for a while.

Danubia · 06/03/2019 07:55

We’re leaving Euratom. This is the result.

MorningRichie · 06/03/2019 07:55

Why would you be shocked that goods that have to be imported are going to be affected by import tariffs?

SalliSunbeem · 06/03/2019 07:56

Don't believe everything the BBC say, they are remainers so it's in their interest to scaremonger.

ballsdeep · 06/03/2019 07:56

I can't believe we are leaving at the end of this month.
Hopefully we will pul out 😊

Roomba · 06/03/2019 07:56

I remember reading about this around two years ago. It's not new news. Not sure what people thought would happen if we voted to leave?

Windowsareforcheaters · 06/03/2019 07:58

Nice Smile at the news that some people with cancer might have to wait longer to get treated.

Really?

ChesterGreySideboard · 06/03/2019 07:58

It’s dreadful but I’m not surprised. Any mention of this in the run up to the vote was shouted down as ‘project fear’.

MorningRichie · 06/03/2019 08:00

Ballsdeep, I wish William Rees Mogg had done.

HamishTheTalkingCactus · 06/03/2019 08:01

it's not just the bbc saying this, it's the royal college of radiologists

MorningRichie · 06/03/2019 08:02

I wish it were possible that those who voted remain are at the front of the queue for the medication. After all, the leavers voted for it and its only fair they get what they voted for.

IceRebel · 06/03/2019 08:02

Don't spoil it for them. It's scaremongering don't you know, Hmm and they won't be told otherwise.

TeaforTwoBiscuitOrThree · 06/03/2019 08:03

Old news. The NHS is the 'biggest importer of fridges at the moment" to stock up on meds and keep them safe. It's a harrowing thought. Glad we left the UK and won't have to put up with this shitshow.

PrawnOfCreation · 06/03/2019 08:04

Fear not, Salli on her flying pig is here to reassure is all that the big bad experts are just telling stories.

I know as a "brexit prepper" I'm at the other end of the scale, and that's not to everyone's liking, but food and manufacturing jobs are just the start. There's so much going to be affected and it's a disgusting state of affairs that things like cancer treatments weren't highlighted more before a yes/no vote.

AlexaShutUp · 06/03/2019 08:05

The continued level of denial among some is astonishing. This is not scaremongering, this is reality.

I can only hope that those who lose loved ones as a result of Brexit will think it was worth it because we'll have "taken back control". Or something.

cantbearsed1 · 06/03/2019 08:06

I knew some medication would be affected, but I had thought that preparations were being made so that serious medical needs will not be affected.
It is scary that peoples cancer treatment may be delayed because of BREXIT.

megletthesecond · 06/03/2019 08:06

I'm not in the least surprised. In fact I thought this was flagged up aged ago.
But it's why I voted to remain as it was always going to be a mess.

FlippinNora1 · 06/03/2019 08:08

Brexit will be the nail in the NHS’s coffin. Not scaremongering, articles written in The Lancet. Or is that publication another one deemed untrustworthy by Brexiteers now?

How very dare those experts spout facts that show Brexit will be a disaster to those not sitting pretty with private health insurance and unlimited funds.

PrawnOfCreation · 06/03/2019 08:09

but I had thought that preparations were being made so that serious medical needs will not be affected.

I think a lot of people are the same, you'll not be alone there. I suppose they can't make solid plans until they know how we're leaving, and as it stands they don't. If we crash out then fuck knows.
