To be shocked BREXIT is going to affect cancer treatment?

cantbearsed1 · 06/03/2019 07:49

Just listening to the BBC radio news and they were interviewing an oncologist who said that because of worries about getting hold of enough isotopes straight after BREXIT, Drs have been advised by the Government to book less people into their clinics for both diagnosis and treatment.
This will mean longer waits for diagnosis and treatment from some patients. I was taken aback that such a serious medical issue is being affected.

No I did not vote for Brexit, I knew it would be a mess, but I was not expecting this one.
And this is not speculation. If oncologists book less people into clinics, there will be longer waits.

The amount of denial still is astounding, but we live in an age where so many seem to think there is no such thing as actual experts.

Given that very recently my medication was (and still is as far as I know) out of stock. How does that tally with 6 weeks/months for every patient? It's simply not true and the very specific issue that the OP has raised is that isotopes cannot be stockpiled.

If people think there is a plan for this, I refer you to the Sea Freight saga.

JRMisOdious · 06/03/2019 08:41

AlexaShutUp: or c) they believed supposedly well educated cabinet ministers who told them that we’ve all had enough of experts. Shameful.

MissedTheBoatAgain · 06/03/2019 08:41

Sure. But if someone persists in a belief that flies in the face of all the facts, and insists that they know better than all of the experts in the field, surely the only realistic conclusion is that they are a)deluded or b)a bit thick

What facts do you refer to? What Experts do you refer to?

Remember the so called Experts saying that even voting to leave would destroy UK overnight? Osbourne indicated there would be an emergency budget required of 30 Billion to plug the gap in public finances. Never happened.

Also it was forecast that around 800, 000 Jobs would be lost. Never happened. Indeed since the 2016 referendum unemployment has decreased.

JRMisOdious · 06/03/2019 08:43

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, we haven’t left yet.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/03/2019 08:44

And please don't shout at the OP. If we shout everyone down who realises a particular severe impact and informs others, criticising them for their lack of knowledge, how on earth are we going to get the word out. Are they supposed to sit there silently, wriggling in embarrassment because they didn't realise something?

There are lots of new facts I learn each day about Brexit and other things - should I keep quiet because I didn't know them beforehand?

MadAboutWands · 06/03/2019 08:45

This is old news. It was in the news months and months ago with very dire warnings about what wouod happen both to medication and any radioactive materials needed for radiotherapy.

And that’s even before you start talking about what was known BEFORE the referendum because I can happily accept that most people didn’t know and it wasn’t mainstream news then. (Or treated as plain scaremongering because it was obvious we would get an agreement with the EU on OUR terms regardless of the realities).

I’m happy to see that sort of reality hitting the AIBU. I think it’s too little too late though. People didn’t want to know about it, threads were moved away ‘because we don’t want to hear about Brexit AGAIN’ has been the usual comments.
The reality is that the head in the sand attitude just gives you that. Realising realities just before they are going to hit you in the face.

BollocksToBrexit · 06/03/2019 08:46

Haven't the government awarded the contract for delivering essential medicines to the company who failed to deliver chicken to KFC? So based on their track record, we're fucked.

Ruperbear · 06/03/2019 08:50

If only all the information was brought to light before the Vote. Instead of lies. 😞

GoldenBlue · 06/03/2019 08:50

Not true, at least in the hospital I work in. Hospitals will still have the same target to see cancer patients within 2 weeks of referral. They will still be accountable for providing rapid treatment,
The NHS plans for drugs post brexit are thorough and detailed.

MadAboutWands · 06/03/2019 08:51

Badkitten I agree with you. Berat8ngnpeople for things they didn’t know isn’t helping.

But I am Shock at the general attitude on MN for example where people just DID NOT want to hear about Brexit. They didn’t want to hear about all the fears and ‘scaremongering news’ so every theread that couod have helped people understand we’re moved away.
In RL, people have done the same. ‘I have enough hearing about brexit’ has been a regular comment I’ve heard.
It’s all well and good. I have enough too. Of Brexit, the incompetence of british politicians and enough the deep seated fear I’ve had since the result of the referendum.
But ignoring what’s happening, ignoring the warnings etc... just leads to that. Not knowing and discovering too late what Brexit actually means.
It is the biggest thing that is happening to Britain for centuries, something that has the potential to break the country itself. I wouod have thought that most people wouod have wanted to KNOW what it meant and be INVOLVED.

Smotheroffive · 06/03/2019 08:51

A few politicians boosting their egos and lining their pockets aren’t going to be concerned about people’s health being affected how? ivykaty

AFAIK stockpiling is going on everywhere, including whole supply chains taking up extra storage space all over the country (and of course I been doing a bit of stock piling of my own Wink )

SalliSunbeem · 06/03/2019 08:52

@MissedTheBoatAgain Everything is blamed on Brexit. It is the remainers desperate attempt to scare people who voted leave to change their mind.

So very true.

Remainers are very pessimistic.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/03/2019 08:54

The nhs is going to be privatised. It’s worth over 100bn a year.
Will be done by stealth. Contracts will be handed out, especially to the yanks. We will all need private insurance. That’s why Theresa May wants to be able to make trade deals with whoever she wants.
People who voted to leave were naive and sold a crock of shit.
people who still want to leave are just ignorant idiots or are set to make a lot of money on the back of contracts.

MissedTheBoatAgain · 06/03/2019 08:54

No I did not vote for Brexit, I knew it would be a mess

It is a mess because EU are afraid for UK to leave and hence they have attempted to block UK departure since the referendum in 2016.

Likewise UK MP's who voted remain think they are entitled to ignore the instruction they received from the Majority of their Employers in June 2016.

Had those who voted remain accepted the result instead of behaving like bad losers they would have been much more progress.

MadAboutWands · 06/03/2019 08:56

Gokden do the plans from your hospital includes

  • tricks going through the border wo any delays
  • new standards being out in 0ace within two weeks so we can get and received medication and radioactive materials in time
  • oh and the training and recruitment of specialist nurses within two weeks too (because so many nurses have left ‘to go back to their own countries’ and so few are appynto come back)

The general government predictions are that some people are going to die in case of a hard Brexit.
I really hope we will never be in that situation and that we will not have to actually check whether said predictions were right and how right they are :(

TheWomanin12B · 06/03/2019 08:56

You keep ignoring reality, I'm sure it will all be fine. Hmm

I'd feel monstrously sick every day if I voted Leave and I realised what my vote was being used for.

You keep telling yourself it's scaremongering if that helps you get through the day.

Fabaunt · 06/03/2019 08:57

What did we expect to be honest? We can’t have our cake and eat it. The British public voted to leave Europe, so be on our own heads it is.

Smotheroffive · 06/03/2019 08:57

How about the £33 million contract awarded to a shipping company, as part of backup measures, that hadn't actually got any ships?!?!

Most reassuring.

IceRebel · 06/03/2019 08:58

Remainers are very pessimistic.

I'd rather be pessimistic, plan and expect the worst. Than to be overly optimistic about a situation which I have yet to see any positive outcomes for.

Government's own predictions. More scaremongering, eh?

To be shocked BREXIT is going to affect cancer treatment?
CielBleuEtNuages · 06/03/2019 08:59

It is a mess because EU are afraid for UK to leave and hence they have attempted to block UK departure since the referendum in 2016.

Attempted to block? Or just not agreed to terms that damage them? The EU have no obligation to offer us good leaving terms.

Had those who voted remain accepted the result instead of behaving like bad losers they would have been much more progress.

Ahah! Very clever. So if Brexit has a negative impact on the British public, it is the fault of remainers. Not the fault of those who voted for Brexit Hmm

MadAboutWands · 06/03/2019 08:59

Likewise UK MP's who voted remain think they are entitled to ignore the instruction they received from the Majority of their Employers in June 2016.

Does it also means that Leavers MP shouod have followed their remain constituency and support Remain then?

The reality is that the vote was split 50/50 during the referendum. And so are the MPs now.
The opposition has never been expected to vote alongside the majority. It is supposed to held the majority who is in power accountable and ask all the most uncomfortable questions.
It’s only fair that remain MPs are doing so to the Leave government. It’s THEIR role as MPs. It’s democracy working.
I am thankful for having a democracy in the U.K.

I hope David Cameron is sleeping easy 🙄🙄🙄🙄
